Resorts in Corbett vicinity to face action
Dehradun, August 12 Chief Wildlife Warden Srikant Chandola informed that many resorts that have come up in close vicinity are gaining publicity by stating that they are located inside the park. A staggering 70-80 resorts and hotels are located around Corbett and often utilise the park’s name to serve their ends. Owners of these resorts often mislead tourists and take them for elephant rides in the territorial divisions of Terai while claiming it to be Corbett. Further, they expose these territorial forest divisions to one and all without verifying the antecedents of the visitors. Chandola informed that under the ongoing “Operation Monsoon” security inside the park has been beefed up and regular patrols are being carried out to ensure safety of the wild animals during monsoon, when they are vulnerable to poachers. Significantly, action against these resorts and strengthening of security at Corbett comes at a time when a couple of days back, Narayan Chand, brother of infamous poacher Sansar Chand, had confessed to have been involved in buying of body parts of 10 tigers from Ramnagar area of Corbett. Chand’s revelations had sent the Uttarakhand forest officials in a tizzy, forcing the Chief Wildlife Warden to hold an emergency meeting with Terai personnel, including CTR. During the meeting, which was attended by Terai West, Ramangar and Kalagarh forest divisions, and Corbett Tiger Park officials, the need of ensuring better coordination between officials was strongly felt. Meanwhile, to improve tourist infrastructure inside Corbett, Chandola today announced that Rs six crore ‘Interpretation Centre’ and Rs 62 lakh ‘Visitors Centre’ at Aamdanda gate of Corbett would soon be set up. He also disclosed that online reservations for rest houses inside Corbett would be introduced by the year-end. He said a boundary-less zoo would also be set up that would act as a rehabilitation centre for rescued animals. The zoo would not hinder the movement of wild animals in the region. |

Students clash with college officials over admission date
Haridwar, August 12 The final admission date for the Bachelor of Arts course had expired on August 10 but the students who failed to meet the deadline are protesting for the extension of the last date. Student union vice-president Ashish Pawar said that if their demand is not met, then they would have to resort to agitation. “We will protest and stage dharnas. If our demands are not met even then, we will resort to a hunger strike,” said Pawar. Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) members gheraoed the college principal and apprised him of the problem being faced by students who could not meet the deadline. But the college administration was adamant that they were following norms and all seats of the BA course have been filled barring a few SC/ST quota seats. It termed the behaviour of students as roguish and uncalled for. In BA (I), a total of 287 students have been admitted, while in B.Com, 161 admissions and in B.Sc, 50 admissions have been made. Dr Ashok Mishra, principal of SMJN college, has demanded the deployment of police in the campus. “The admission process has been conducted according to norms but still, some persons are trying to disrupt the peace in the college. So police patrol is essential for the smooth functioning of the college,” said Mishra. The police will help curb ragging and check eve teasing. Dr Mishra said that he was particularly concerned about girl students who form a major chunk of the student strength. SMJN College has a total strength of about 2,400 students out of which approximately 65 per cent are girls. Meanwhile, the college has geared itself up to check ragging with an anti-ragging cell. A separate women’s cell for girl students has also been formed. |

Now, BEd institutes to admit on merit
Dehradun, August 12 Since their opening under the state government policy four years back, all private institutes were admitting students against 50 per cent management quota seats on first come first serve basis. “In the wake of the NCTE decision, we have decided to make admissions strictly on merit basis against 1,100 management quota seats in the remaining 22 institutes,” said Sunil Aggarwal, secretary, Association of Self-financed Private Institutes, Uttarakhand. Of the institutes penalised by the NCTE, as many as 18 had been facing allegations of giving admissions to low-merit students besides flouting reservation norms. HNB Garhwal University had conducted an inquiry into these allegations. The report of the inquiry recommending their de-recognition was sent to the NCTE. The state SC/ST Commission too had taken cognisance of these irregularities. Aggarwal said that applications from the students for admission would be invited through newspaper advertisement after the university issues the cut-off list. |
