Two held in MMS case
Haridwar, August 2 The clip was made a year ago in which the suspects had stripped and physically abused a girl in presence of her boyfriend and had filmed the entire sequence. Later, the clip was circulated in whole area, via Bluetooth, by the miscreants. The case had become sensitive as a person employed in state secretariat and some forest guards were also involved in the act. The miscreants said that they had made the clip a year ago when Manju and Ajesh were roaming in the outskirts of the Sureshwari Devi forest near the sports stadium, Sector 5, BHEL. They beat up Ajesh and tied him to a tree. They beat up the girl too and forced her to undress. The police took up the matter when the media flashed the MMS clip and CO Lakshar Pankaj Bhatt was given the case. The police took the help of local intelligence unit and sent the clip to the special cyber cell of the Special Task Force (STF) in Dehradun for identification of the persons seen in the clip. Lauding the role of the media, SSP Sanjay Gunjiyal said that he took cognisance of the crime only when local newspapers reported it. A reward of Rs 2,500 each has been announced for members of the police team that comprised LS Bisht, KC Bhatt, Vijay Bharati and Sarati Shah. A case has been registered under Sections 292/384/504 of Indian Penal Code, Section 67 of the Information Technology Act and Section 6 of Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act 1986. Two years earlier, an obscene MMS clip had rocked the city when an Gurukul Kanya Mahavidyalaya teacher was filmed by some college employees. However, last month, the accused were let off for lack of evidence. |

Now, gear up for Kumbh, Nishank tells cops
Dehradun, August 2 Addressing mediapersons after inaugurating an exhibition organised by Uttarakhand Police at the Police Lines here today, Nishank said the cops handled the Kanwar Mela very well. “Kanwar Mela, during which as many as 75 lakh devotees came to Uttarakhand, concluded without any law and order problem. This is extremely laudable and we also got the feedback that conduct of the cops with the pilgrims was very good,” said the Chief Minister. Expressing his views on the preparations for the Maha Kumbh, scheduled to get underway early next year, Nishank said the Maha Kumbh would be a big challenge for the state. “But we are sure that Uttarakhand government will successfully hold the Maha Kumbh,” he claimed. The CM further asked the state police to gear up for the Maha Kumbh. Nishank, scheduled to leave for New Delhi tomorrow, said he would discuss various issues related to the development of Uttarakhand with the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. “With more than 60 per cent forest cover, Uttarakhand plays an important role in maintaining the environmental equilibrium of the country. Hence, the state deserves to get the special packages,” he told mediapersons. Earlier, Nishank took stock of various police activities displayed at the exhibition, including functioning of the bomb squad, latest arms and ammunitions available with the state police, functioning of divers and its fire-fighting methods et al. Nishank was also informed about various police training institutes in the state and their performance. Meanwhile, the CM also gave 10 Bolero utility vans and 20 motorcycles to the police. Half of the 20 motorcycles would be inducted into the special 'Cheetah Squad', while the remaining would be handed over to various police stations. |

Minister inspects hospitals, pulls up staff
Haridwar, August 2
While inspecting the women’s hospital, he was perturbed by the fact that patients have to buy medicines from chemist shops outside the hospital. He directed the officials to stock medicines so that patients get all medical services at the hospital. “If we can’t provide basic amenities such as clean water and sanitation, then how will patients have faith in our medical treatment,” asked the minister. Balwant Singh Bhauriyal said that filling of vacant posts for doctors was his priority. He assured there would be no scarcity of doctors in district hospitals within a few months. He said that the state health ministry plans to have all doctors, nurses and ANMs’ contact numbers displayed in hospitals and medical centres so that patients could contact them. During his visit to Haridwar, members of various organisations met the minister and apprised him of their demands and problems. Rajya Karmachari Sanyukta Parishad, Ministerial Association, Tritya and Chaturtha Shreni Rajyakarmachari Sangh executive members raised the issue of allotment of government quarters and the lack of staff in their departments. Led by Dinesh Lakhera, the delegation also informed the minister about the lack of medical facilities in their areas. “We have given a memorandum in this regard and the minister has assured that the problems will be solved within a month,” said Lakhera. |

CBI team keeps media at bay
Raju William Tribune News Service
Dehradun, August 2 Albeit mediapersons followed the CBI team that visited Ladpur forest area where Ghaziabad boy Ranbir was allegedly killed, as well as the Jain Dharamshala where the deceased stayed along with his two friends, they could not manage to interact with the team. The way the CBI sleuths conducted themselves displayed their professionalism. Apparently, the instructions have been passed to avoid unnecessary media trial like in the high profile Arushi murder case. Although the CBI office in Lucknow is conducting the investigation, officials of Dehradun office had a hard day stonewalling media queries. Being posted here, they are naturally known to the local scribes. “I got a number of calls from many mediapersons looking for some inputs on the progress of the investigation, but I politely refused,” said a Dehradun-based official. The local CBI office is also involved in the investigation. Given the allegations of fake encounter and the wide coverage given to it at the national level, the case was handed to the premier investigation agency to establish the truth. The case assumed political overtones due to the fact that the deceased belonged to the parliamentary constituency of BJP president Rajnath Singh. The involvement of president of Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) Mahender Singh Tikait also contributed in mounting the pressure on the state government for the CBI probe. |

Fund crunch hits school sports
Dehradun, August 2 LM Bahuguna, sports instructor in Laxman Vidhyalay was angry over the way sports were being dealt in government schools. He accused the schools for having a non-serious attitude towards games. He believed that the approach hindered talented students from going ahead in the field of sports. “It won’t be wrong if I say that most of the games that are said to be organised in schools appear just on paper. “But when it comes to organising these games at the ground level, schools do not follow rules in toto. “Instead government school just limit them to domestic games like kho-kho, kabaddi reason being other games like cricket, hockey, table tennis and other such games require big investments,” said Bahuguna. He further said that sports fee charged by the government is minimal: for an inter-session Rs 3 is charged as sports fee, Rs 2 at junior session and Re 1 at primary session per month. Out of which five months sports fees is given to the Education Directorate, whereas the remaining seven months fee is used by schools for the promotion of sports. He complained that had Education Directorate provided funds for the competition then in that case even the government schools could have organised and participated in the competitions. “Seven months fee is not enough to organise competitions or to meet the sports requirements and on the part of the Education Director there is no financial assistance given by them during any competition. “We are left with little resources to organise a competition,” said Bahuguna. SDS Rawat another physical instructor in Rajkiya Inter-College Bhagwarikhal revealed that due to lack of fields children of government colleges are forced to take outdoor coaching. They either move to police line for physical activity or join some sports academy. RS Sharma another sports instructor of a government school further said, “Hockey once use to be an important game in schools but with the time the game has just vanished.” He revealed that non-availability of funds is the reason behind this. He demanded that government should increase the sports fee of the children so that competitions like cricket, hockey, table tennis and badminton could be organised. |
