Strikers attack drivers
New Delhi, August 18 However, the police has not registered any case in this connection. It was a two-day strike called jointly by most auto unions. The strikers burnt an effigy of Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh Lovely for not listening to their demands. Many passengers had to take taxis and vehicles of their friends and relatives to reach their destinations from railway stations, ISBT and airport. There was not a single auto at pre-paid booth at New Delhi railway Station this afternoon. When this was brought to the notice of Lovely, he said that he had already discussed this issue with the Special Commissioner, Delhi Police, Neeraj Kumar. He said that the government was not going to give in as the demands of the strikers were not genuine. Warning the autorickshaw unions, Lovely said that the department had constituted 25 teams of enforcement cell deputed at railway stations, ISBTs, airport and market places to take action against the autorickshaw drivers if they refuse to operate or overcharge. If the strike is not called off today, the enforcement team would impound any auto parked on the roadside. Their permit would be cancelled and it would be issued to others. The department has a list of 23,000 applicants seeking permits of autos, he added. Lovely appealed to the citizens to cooperate with the government as the action had been taken against the drivers on the basis of their complaints. Their meters are either tampered with or non-functional. Strike is the result of stern action taken by the department, he pointed out. Transport commissioner R. K. Verma said that 150 autos were impounded yesterday and 450 last week. He said that the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) had increased a fleet of 500 buses in the city to meet the problems caused by auto strike. General secretary of the All Delhi Auto and Taxi Union, Ripantuli said that the transport minister was misguiding the citizens of the Capital as it was only a two-day strike. Now all the autos would come on road from this evening. If he had guts to take action, he should have taken on the first day of the strike. The autorickshaw union will submit a memorandum to the minister on Monday, he said. |
JNU students try to restore faith in ragging-free culture
New Delhi, August 18 “The incident has brought disgrace to the entire students community, which had always kept such inhuman acts outside the walls of this university,” said P.K.Anand, a student activist. The senior students have now come out to extend full support and asked the junior students not to lose faith in the university’s unique culture. “Ragging is one of the biggest social evils, which face the student movement in our country. JNU’s student politics worked towards an atmosphere of alternative culture, which provides a hierarchy-free and healthy atmosphere for interaction between the old and new students,” said Roshan Kumar, a Ph.D. student. The university students have also confirmed that there are reports of ragging incidents in the School of Life Sciences and Computer Sciences. “In the school building we knew that in the name of interaction, there were incidents of ragging and even girl students were involved in some of these incidents. But we had never heard of any such incident on the hostel premises,” said another senior student from School of Social Sciences on the condition of anonymity. Sources also said the students caught in the ragging incident this time had a history of such incidents. “Two years back similar incident was reported and the same students were involved in that incident as well. Somehow no formal complaint was registered then and they were saved,” said Sandeep, president, JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU). The senior students on campus have appealed to the student community to “unite against such elements and defeat any attempt to justify this inhuman act”. |
5 more labs to test samples
New Delhi, August 18 The two have been admitted to the Airport and the RML Hospitals. In view of the people increasingly getting affected, the Delhi government today said five more laboratories would be assigned to testpeople with flu symptoms. “We have identified five more laboratories for conducting the test,” said Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Till now Delhi had only two laboratories with the facility to undertake the tests of the people suspected to have H1N1 virus. “These laboratories will start testing the samples from today onwards,” she said. With this, the Capital has a total of seven laboratories where samples can be tested for the viral disease, which has claimed around 30 lives across the country. Presently, samples are tested at the National Institute of Communicable Diseases, AIIMS and Patel Chest Institute. The Chief Minister reiterated the fact that there is no need for schools to close down. However, she said, she would warn people against being careless. The union health ministry has recently allowed state governments to involve private hospitals and laboratories for effectively tackling the disease. A record 220 people tested positive for influenza A (H1N1) yesterday, taking the total number of infected persons in the country to 1,928, but no more deaths from the virus were reported in the day, health officials said. |

Better policing in Gurgaon needed: CM
Chandigarh, August 18 “Hooda has drawn the attention of the union government towards the need of enhancing the policing capabilities in Gurgaon. It is required to address the unique challenges posed by the growth of business activity and heavy influx of people, including a huge number of foreign nationals, in this area,” a state government spokesperson said here. “The phenomenal growth of Gurgaon as an international destination for foreign investments has placed tremendous responsibility on the state police,” the official said. Hooda had made these observations while speaking at the meeting of chief ministers on internal security in New Delhi on Monday. “Gurgaon is home to several multi-billion dollar MNCs and large corporate enterprises, which make the police’s work more demanding and complicated. Any breach in security in this vulnerable area would cause irreversible damage to the credibility of the nation’s security system,” the spokesperson said. The Haryana government had raised this issue with the central government in April this year too. Besides, in view of the forthcoming Commonwealth Games, Haryana is all set to raise a fourth India Reserve Battalion, as a full commando unit, to meet the growing security challenges in the national capital region. — IANS |
Unified approach must to save Ridge: CM
New Delhi, August 18 Speaking in a national conference of environment and forest ministers of states, she stated that her aim was to make Delhi as one of the greenest capitals of the world. The government was keen to expand its green cover from the existing 20 per cent to 30 per cent. She lauded the role of Eco Task Force of Delhi government in greening the Ridge area in Bhatti Mines. It was an impossible task which had been made possible by the Eco Task Force. The protection of the Ridge was a challenge in itself. It required a unified approach as different agencies had been working without any coordination. The city government decided to construct a high wall around the Ridge right from Pusa Road up to Dhaula Kuan to overcome problem of encroachment and accumulation of debris (malwa). At present, the government was developing nine city forests during current year. The figure of city forests would go up to 41 in 2010. The city government had constituted Delhi Parks and Gardens Society to promote Bhagidari in maintenance of parks. This would present a better green picture during Commonwealth Games, she said. Dikshit further stressed the need of a dedicated staff for implementation of Environment Protection Act, 1986 as basic enforcing agency. Apart from this, the number of enforcement staff of forest department is inadequate to handle the situation. Hence, it required a dedicated staff for this purpose. This would go a long way in enforcement of provisions of the Act. She stated that cleaning of the Yamuna was essential to revive glory of the city. The water quality of river was being monitored by Delhi Pollution Control Committee along with Central Pollution Control Board at nine locations. |
