Thieves strike at 3 places in Panchkula

In a spate of robberies and thefts in the town, thieves struck at three places in broad daylight and decamped with cash and jewellery worth around Rs 4 lakh here today.

Dell employee found dead
Chandigarh, August 18
Mystery shrouds the death of Varinder, alias Veeru, a 27-year-old Dell employee, who was found dead in a semi-clad condition in the bathroom of his PG accommodation at Sector 37 here this morning. He was from Rampur in Shimla.



Union minister for human resource development Kapil Sibal at Panchkula on Tuesday. ‘I was also slapped in school’
Chandigarh, August 18
In a statement that could add to the embarrassment of St John’s High School, Sector 26, union minister for human resource development Kapil Sibal today announced at a press conference that he was slapped several times when he was studying at St John’s. Reacting to the recent case of corporal punishment in the school, he expressed his disapproval of such an act and made his stand clear on zero tolerance to corporal punishment.

Several BSNL numbers out of order
Mohali, August 18
Unmindful of the harassment faced by hundreds of telephone subscribers, the Punjab circle of the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) seems to be in a hurry to shift over 5,000 telephone numbers from the telephone exchange in Phase X to another telephone exchange in Phase XI, here.

Swine flu awareness seminar

A seminar was organised in Chandigarh Group of Colleges, Landran, to make staff and students aware of the Swine Flu. Dr Bhanu Partap from Ivy Hospital, Mohali, gave detailed information about the disease.

Rural area gets modern operating theatre
Bassi Pathana, August 18 The first of its kind modern operation theatre having all facilities was inaugurated in a rural area at Community Health Centre, Khera, falling under Nandpur Kalour Primary Health Centre, by civil surgeon Dr Satwant Kaur Bhalla yesterday. It is the first operation theatre situated in the rural area, which would cater to the need of rural people.

Man held with two stolen cars, bike
Chandigarh, August 18
The police today arrested a city resident from Sector 52 and recovered two cars and a motor cycle from him. The accused is a drug-addict, said the police. The accused has been identified as 22-year-old Dilbagh Singh.
