Residents protest boy’s electrocution
at BSES substation
New Delhi, August 13 The agitators demanded immediate arrest of the officials responsible for the incident. The police has lodged an FIR in the matter, but no arrests have been made so far. However, the BSES officials have denied their role in the death of the boy, saying the boy climbed the wall out of ignorance to enter the enclosed area of the substation. “We have been repeatedly issuing warnings to people suggesting to stay away from the restricted area. The 11 KV sub-station at Lajpat Nagar, where the unfortunate incident took place, is also an enclosed area where entry is restricted,” said one of the BSES officials. “The boy climbed the wall to enter the sub-station and came in contact with some live parts,” he said. However, residents alleged that they had requested the BSES officials to properly enclose the substation to restrict any access, but no action was taken. As of now, the company is not consideration giving any compensation to the family of the deceased. “No such decision is being considered so far,” added the officer. In a similar incident, Anshul Sharma, a 15-year-old boy, had died in January 2005 at IFCI Colony in Pashchim Vihar. |
Students block traffic against beating
New Delhi, August 13 Irked by alleged police inaction against the shopkeeper Bhupinder and his son Manpreet, students gathered on the road near Batra cinema and blocked the traffic. It was only after the senior police officers arrived on the scene and gave assurances that the students left the place. According to police, a case has been lodged against five people today. Navneet and Rahul were reportedly having tea at a vendor’s shop yesterday evening when they got into an altercation with Bhupinder. “These students were having tea while sitting on the stairs which seemed to have blocked the way to Bhupinder’s shop. Even as students were moving aside, his son Manpreet abused one of the students which led to heated exchange that turned violent,” said a police officer from the area. Manpreet hit Rahul with a bench causing injury on his head. It was only after the intervention of other shopkeepers and students that the fight stopped. However, the police did not lodge a complaint and instead took Navneet to the police station for questioning. Soon the word of detaining a student spread among hundreds of others residing in the area. They decided to block the traffic. According to information, the road remained blocked for more than an hour as students sat in the middle of the road, clamouring for justice. |
Refusing swine flu cases will invite action: Walia to
New Delhi, August 13 She said all 200-bed hospitals had been issued directions to treat swine flu patients. The Apollo Hospital initially had some reservations, but now it has also agreed to co-operate, she said. “An official of the Apollo Hospital has informed that it has agreed to admit swine flu patients,” said Kiran Walia, when media persons asked her about the response of private hospitals. In the beginning, private hospitals had reservations but, gradually they were accepting government’s direction, she said. Walia said three fresh positive cases of H1N1 influenza had been reported in the government hospitals today. Two cases were reported at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital and one at the Airport Hospital. All the patients were school children and had been quarantined at home, she added. Walia informed that currently 46 cases had been reported at various designated government hospitals in Delhi. Out of these, only five are confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza and for the rest, the reports were awaited. Further, 18 patients were being treated as home quarantine cases, she added. |
Power supply hit hard
New Delhi, August 13 Areas like CR Park, Rajouri Garden, Vikas Marg, IP Extension, Lajpat Nagar, Kalkaji, Mayur Vihar, Inderpuri, Kalyanpuri, and Malviya Nagar faced frequent disruption of power supply throughout the day. “The power supply has been erratic for many days,” complained a resident of Kalkaji. “The demand was met by overdrawing from the grid. Any loadshedding was primarily due to low grid frequency. States like Rajasthan and Haryana were overdrawing heavily leading to frequent disruption in the grid,” said a senior official. Experts said there was a shortage of power in the northern region because of the delayed monsoon. Delhi’s local generation has been running low for the last few days. The Capital normally gets about 1350 MW from its own power stations, but the last few days have seen a local generation of 700-1000 MW only. Senior officials said local generation would pick up next week. |
Shed load on rotation, discoms told
Loadshedding should be resorted to strictly on a rotation basis. Normally, it should be of one hour duration and in exceptional cases should not extend beyond two hours. This direction was given after a meeting of the power department called by chief secretary (CS) Rakesh Mehta. The CS stressed that the discoms should make an arrangement to meet the demand of the citizens. Citizens were also requested to help conserve power at this critical juncture. Even a 10 per cent reduction in consumption would tide over the current problem and would ensure power in all households of Delhi, he said. |

Sehgal bled to death from stab injuries on the left thigh while being rushed to the Lal Bahahdur Hospital, the police said. “The three men were standing on the foot-board of the bus. Sehgal had to get down at the next stop so he objected to their standing in the way and blocking the door. This led to a heated argument between them. The accused then attacked Sehgal with a knife,” said a police officer who is investigating the matter. Two of the accused - Mahesh and Tajpal, both in their early 20s - have been arrested after the bus driver identified them. “Mahesh is an accused in an another murder case also. Ghori Bachhera Anniversary
Greater Noida, August 13 The farmers observed it as a Black Day. Over 12,000 farmers from the villages of the area collected at the GNIDA office for a protest rally for which Congress leaders and cadres had been working for many days. The farmers today demanded a plot of land measuring 500 sq mt for erecting the memorial (shahid samark) in Ghori Bachhera village in memory of the six farmers who had been martyred in the police firing. This demand has been accepted by GNIDA. The farmers of Ghori Bachhera accused GNIDA of having gone back on its promises. Not a single farmer’s demand has been fulfilled by Greater Noida Authority alleged Ramesh Rawal, president of the Kisan Sangarsh Samit. No letters have been issued for the plots allotted to the families of martyrs of the farmers’ cause. Even the police cases registered against 1100 farmers have not been withdrawn yet. The Sangarsh Samiti has given the authorities one-month time to fulfil all their demands, failing which, they would restart their agitation on September 13. Besides, the abadi issue has not been sorted out yet. So the farmers decided to organise a mourning session (shok sabha) today. After that, they marched in a rally towards Greater Noida Authority office and and held a demonstration. Deputy CEO P.C. Gupta, however, said that plots for martyrs have already been allotted. Though the GNIDA had given an interim bonus of Rs 310 on the compensation already paid, farmers have not been yet freed from acquisition of abadi land. A large number of farmers daily make trips to authority office for this purpose. |
Drivers recruited by rigorous procedure: DMRC
New Delhi, August 13 The accident that could have caused heavy loss to human life happened as the driver pulled up the train before it was given a green signal. Another reason for the accident was that the driver did not wait for the train to start its automatic mechanism of reading signals. The Metro officials have, however, maintained that there is a strict selection procedure of recruiting drivers. “Train operators go through strict recruitment process comprising four stages. The most important is the psycho test in which the reaction and alertness of the candidates are analysed under different circumstances,” said Anuj Dayal, spokesperson, DMRC. After applying for the post of train operator, the candidates have to take a written test that is checked with negative marking. The psycho test follows the written test and almost 50 per cent of the candidates fail in the test. “It is a difficult test and most candidates fail. It is conducted by RDSO team from Lucknow,” said a former train operator from DMRC. Selected candidates are then called for an interview followed by a strict medical examination in which another 30 per cent candidates are sent back. The finally selected train operators are sent to Shastri Park training institute of DMRC for six weeks. After six months, the train operators are again sent to the institute for refresher courses. “Before boarding the train also, all train operators undergo breath-analyzer at crew control and then are they allowed to operate the train,” said Dayal. DMRC runs two kinds of Metro trains in Delhi—ATO and ATP. The ATO trains are generally run on the elevated sections of Metro line 3 and line 1. “Though the ATO train keeps providing back-up to the operators, generally this train is manually run,” said Dayal. He added, “In case the driver refuses to confirm to the guidelines, the Metro engine would stop on its own.” In case of ATP trains, the system is more advanced and the train runs itself most of the time. The operators do not have much to do in these underground trains run on line 2. Dayal pointed out that in yesterday’s accident, the train operator did not wait for the ATO system to start and pulled off the train before it was ready. An enquiry committee of four persons, coordinated by the traffic advisor Govind, has been formulated to look into the accident and submit its report to the DMRC in a week. Meanwhile, huge rush was seen at the Dwarka to Yamuna Bank line of Delhi Metro today as the trains were running at an interval of around 15 minutes. The Metro officials also said the anchor bolts of the track at the accident site were damaged in the accident and their repair would take around seven days. The repair work would be carried out in the night so the traffic on the track was not disturbed. |

The kiosks are expected to get popular among Metro commuters and foreign buyers, expected in large numbers during the Commonwealth Games. In this connection, secretary (textiles), Rita Menon, met the DMRC managing director E. Sreedharan today and presented him a cheque of Rs 5 crore as the first installment for establishing the kiosks.
