Ex-ICL players can play IPL
Mumbai, August 13 The board took this decision at its working committee meeting here that also approved a whopping increase in the prize money for Ranji Trophy champions and a grant of Rs 25 crore to the All-India Football Federation spread over two years. “The ex-ICL players who have been granted amnesty (numbering 79) are eligible to play the IPL in the next season (2010) with a cap on the payment being a maximum of Rs 20 lakh,” BCCI Secretary N Srinivasan said in a media statement. But apparently there’s a rider to this green signal that has not been spelt out officially, but was confirmed by other BCCI sources, who said no player against whom match-fixing charges have been levelled (by the ICL), notably Dinesh Mongia of Punjab, would be allowed to take part in the cash-rich T20 event. “Players against whom match-fixing chargers are there would not be allowed to play in the IPL,” sources said after the meeting. The winners of the Ranji Trophy in the coming season would get Rs 2 crore, Rs 1.4 crore more than what Mumbai got for clinching the title for the 38th time last season. The runners-up would get Rs 1 crore and the losing semifinalists Rs 50 lakh. In another important decision, the board decided to assist the All-India Football Federation (AIFF) “for the development of football” in the country. The working committee decided to give the AIFF Rs 25 crore, half to be given this year and the remaining next year. This came in the wake of a letter written by AIFF acting president Praful Patel to the BCCI requesting for the sum, which was, in turn, recommended by the finance committee headed by Rajiv Shukla to the working committee for its approval. The board has nominated Bangalore umpire Shavir Tarapore and Ahmedabad’s Amish Saheba for the International Cricket Council’s panel while naming Sanjay Hazare of Baroda as the TV umpire. Tarapore edged out former Rajasthan cricketer Suresh Shastri from the panel, but no Indian umpire has as yet been named in the ICC’s elite panel. The BCCI working committee also decided to set up specialised coaching centres in Mumbai (batting), Mohali (fast bowling) and Chennai (spinners and wicketkeepers) from September. Specialist coaches will be appointed on annual retainership at each of the centres. The committee also approved in principle the setting up of an umpires’ academy. Among other decisions, umpires and coaches will get Rs 7,500 per match day, while Rs 3,750 will be deposited in their Benevolent Fund. Umpire, coaches and match referees (IPL excepted) will be paid Rs 10,000 per match-day. The team and support staff that won the Emerging Players Tournament in Australia will be paid a bonus of Rs 1 lakh each. |
Bonanza for BCCI affiliates
Mumbai, August 13 “The figure is around Rs 20 crore for each association for 2008-09, which is projected to increase to Rs 24-28 crore next year. All this will have to be passed at the AGM,” BCCI sources said today after its working committee meeting. Finance Committee Chairman Rajiv Shukla had yesterday informed reporters after the panel’s meeting that the board’s profits have taken a dip.

ICC to discuss WADA issue on Sept 5, 6
Dubai, August 13 The panel, which includes India’s former Test captain Anil Kumble, will discuss the cricketers’ concerns about the “whereabout” clause, which they have refused to sign citing security risk and breach of privacy. “Confirming the scope of the group and a date for the meeting represents a successful start and we can now get on with addressing the outstanding practical issues of the Indian players,” International Cricket Council Chief Executive Haroon Lorgat in a statement after a teleconference among the panel members last evening.

Battle for England
Contenders The Hammers also narrowly missed out on European soccer last season after playing some excellent football at times under Gianfranco Zola, who replaced Alan Curbishley early in the season. Although the ownership of the club and its immediate financial future remains uncertain, the Hammers should challenge for a European place again. STOKE CITY (12th)
Direct, uncompromising football and a pragmatic approach from coach Tony Pulis meant Stoke surprised many people last season by avoiding an immediate return to the Championship. Stoke’s home fans helped them build a solid total of points at the Britannia Stadium, but their opponents know what to expect now and they face another tough season, but probably have more than enough to survive. SUNDERLAND (16th)
New manager Steve Bruce, who built good sides at Birmingham City and Wigan Athletic, now has the chance to do even better at Sunderland, a club with a much bigger fan-base and better resources than either Birmingham or Wigan. The arrival of Darren Bent and Fraizer Campbell will give him options in attack where Kenwyne Jones remains
a dangerous threat on his day. WIGAN ATHLETIC (11th)
New coach Roberto Martinez impressed at Swansea City in thelower divisions and has inherited a sound squad from Steve Bruce, even if a number of Wigan’s top players like Antonio Valencia and Wilson Palacios have left. Trinidad and Tobago striker Jason Scotland has followed Martinez from Swansea into the Premier League and will need to adjust quickly to life in the top flight to help Wigan maintain their status. Coming Up Expectations are always high at Molineux where the club’s illustrious past remains a heavy millstone-but Wolves look better equipped to surive in the Premier League than they did when they lasted for just one season in 2003-04. Manager Mick McCarthy, who suffered a torrid time with Sunderland in 2005-06, seems to have a squad able to consolidate and avoid an immediate return to the Championship although much will depend on the form of former Manchester United trainee Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Wolves’ top scorer with 25 goals when they won the Championship last season.

India lose final hockey Test against Spain
Terrassa (Spain), August 13 India came back from a 1-4 deficit to level the score, but Albert Sala’s 70th minute strike crushed their hopes, last night. Xavi Ribas (8th), Eduard Tabau (12th), David Alegre (25th), Alex Fabregas (27th) and Sala (70th min) were the goal-getters for Spain, while India reduced margin through Sardara Singh (28th), Vikram Pillay (54th and 57th) and Sandeep Singh (66th min). India had received a 2-8 mauling at the hands of Spain in the first Test before the visitors pulled one back by winning the second match - a truncated friendly of 20 minutes each half - by a solitary goal. India now travel to Amsterdam for the final leg of their Europe tour, where they play Holland on Friday and Sunday. The hosts began aggressively last night with constant raids on the Indian defence by Tabau and Xavi Lleonart supported by strong midfield overlaps. India conceded a penalty corner in the eighth minute when the ball struck skipper Sandeep Singh’s foot and Ribas made no mistake as he sunk one low on the left of goalkeeper Adrian Dsouza. Indians soon conceded another soft goal as Tabau breached the defence of Sandeep and Sardar Singh and beat D’souza with a wrong foot shot in the 12th minute. Rattled by early setbacks, the Indian defence and midfield began ball rotation, but the forwards Prabhjot Singh, Gurvinder Chandi and Rajpal Singh were unable to penetrate past goalkeeper Francisco Cortes. |
