Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook shared an opening stand of 58 for England but the former got out for 32, Ravi Bopara fell first ball and Johnson removed Ian Bell, Paul Collingwood and Cook.

Nightwatchman James Anderson was unbeaten on nought at the close with Matt Prior, dropped off the last ball of the day, on four. North and Michael Clarke compiled a fifth-wicket partnership of 152 in the morning session to turn the screw on England who were bowled out for 102 on Friday and again looked laboured in the field.

Graham Onions trapped Clarke lbw for 93 just before the interval but the batsmen had picked off boundaries at will and experienced few problems against such a lacklustre attack.

North received useful support from the lower order and he reached his third century in six tests with a huge slog sweep for six off spinner Graeme Swann before raising his bat to the balcony and kissing his helmet. Brad Haddin fell to the second new ball for 14 but Johnson struck a few lusty blows in his 27 and Stuart Clark launched a blistering attack with three sixes in a rapid 32. — Reuters

Ghei finishes tied fifth
Donald Banerjee

Gaganjeet Bhullar gof his game in order on the final day carding a four-under 67 to finish tied 32 at two over 286 as Gaurav Ghei emerged on top among Indians to tie for the fifth place at six under 278 in the Worldwide Holdings Selangor Masters at Petaling Jaya in Malaysia today.

Twentyfour-year-old Australian Rick Kulacz claimed his second Asian Tour title with a course record card of eight under 63 for an 11 under par 273 total, defeating overnight leader Kiradech Aphibarnrat of Thailand by one stroke.

Mark Purser of New Zealand finished third on 276 with South Africa’s James Kamte finishing one stroke behind at 277. Noh Seung-yul of Korea, Japanese Kodai Ichihara and India’s Gaurav Ghei shared fifth on 278.

After failing to break the par in the first three rounds, including two horrendous three over 74 in the first and the third, the 21-year-old Kapurthala lad found his touch again, but it was too late. Teeing off from the 10th hole, Bhullar birdied the 11th and 13th. He lost a stroke on the 15th, but made amends with another birdie on the 16th to be two under 33 at the turn.

He sank another birdie on the second hole of the back nine. A brace of bogeys on the third and fourth put him back. But then he came back with three birdies on the fifth, sixth and eighth to finish at four under 67 and a final tally of two over 286.

Gaurav Ghei, who has not had a good innings this season, had reason to be happy when he tied for the fifth place. The Delhi golfer who turns 41 on September 25 shot three birdies against a lone bogey to be two under 34 at the turn. He fired another three birdies against two birdies for a one under 34 back nine and a three under 68 card.

C. Muniyappa finished tied 15 at two under 282, followed by Rahil Gangjee, who was tied 29th at one over 285. Bangalorean Anirban Lahiri carded a five over 76 to finish tied 47 at five over 289 with Digvijay Singh at the Indian tailend at eight over 292.

Jeev tied 36th

Jeev Milkha Singh made a good start, but faltered with a triple bogey on the 16th for a one over 71 card to slip from overnight 27th spot to be tied 36th at one over par 141 as Irishman Padraig Harrington maintained his lead at 133 at the midway stage of the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational at Ohio, USA. today.

Harrington will take a one shot lead into the third round with Tim Clark on six under following a 68. Another stroke behind at 135 is Scott Verplank.

Jeev, back after a three-week rest in Chandigarh, started off well playing a bogey-free two-under 33 front nine with birdies on the first and fifth. He played steadily parring six holes on the return nine.

But then he struck a very bad patch triple-bogeying the 16th. A birdie on the 17th and a bogey on the 18th saw him finish the day with a one over par 71 card for a two-day tally of one over 141

Viru hopes to play in CT

Mumbai, August 8
After being out of action for over two months following a shoulder injury that needed surgery, dashing opener Virender Sehwag is hoping to return to top-notch cricket through the ICC Champions Trophy next month. “I am hoping to play in the ICC Champions Trophy. My rehabilitation is going well,” said the Delhi marauder on the sidelines of a book release function here last evening.

Sehwag sustained the shoulder injury during the semifinals of the Indian Premier League in South Africa in May while captaining Delhi Daredevils against eventual winners Deccan Chargers. He was in the Indian squad for the World T20 Cup in England but could not play any part because of the injury to his right shoulder that needed surgery.

Sehwag underwent a surgery on June 11 after a lesion was identified in the injured shoulder and he was ruled out of action from between 12 to 16 weeks. The lesion was expected to heal in six weeks. Indian team’s physio Nitin Patel was given the task of monitoring Sehwag’s rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore.

The Champions Trophy, earlier termed the Mini World Cup, is also to be held in South Africa from September 22. Sehwag said he will start batting practice from the first week of September and is now able to lift 10 kg with his injured shoulder. “But I can’t throw or bowl yet,” he said.

As a first step towards a recall into the Indian team, Sehwag, who has played in 69 Tests and 205 ODIs in which he has amassed a combined 12,000-plus runs, at a fabulous strike rate of close to 90, is to visit the NCA in Bangalore on August 15.

Significantly, the Indian selectors are to meet on August 16 to pick the Champions Trophy squad, as well as the ODI squad for the triangular series in Sri Lanka preceding it, on the next day at Chennai. Sehwag’s selection would depend on the report that would be sent by the Indian team physiotherapist ahead of the selection panel meeting. He has been visiting the NCA after his surgery as part of his rehab process. — PTI
