RCB take on Cobras in opener
Mumbai, July 30 Hyderabad will host the final on October 23 as well as the second semi-final on October 22 while Delhi will host the first semi-final on October 21, as per the draw and match schedule announced today by the CLT20 Governing Council. Three Indian teams - IPL-II champions Deccan Chargers Hyderabad, runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils, the top finishers after the league phase - will take part in the tournament to be held in three centres across the country. Cricket Australia and South Africa, the other two founder members of the tournament, will have two teams each while an equal number of teams will represent the England and Wales Cricket Board. The remaining three teams will be from New Zealand, Sri Lanka and the West Indies. The teams will be divided into four groups of three each in the first phase of the event to spot eight qualifiers for the second league phase. The three Indian teams have been pooled in different groups in the preliminary phase. While Deccan Chargers have been drawn in Group A, Royal Challengers and Delhi Daredevils are in Group C and D, respectively. After the teams play their respective group rivals in round one, to be held from October 8-14, the top two teams will qualify for the second league phase, to be held from October 15-19. The eight teams to reach the second league phase will be split into two groups of four each. The top four teams from the second phase will progress to the semi-finals (October 21 and 22) and the winners of the semi-finals will clash in the grand final on October 23. There will be a total of 23 matches spread over 16 days and matches will be held at 4 pm and 8 pm IST. CLT20 Chairman Lalit Modi said after the schedule was finalised that it was the ideal tournament to "crown the best-of-the-best in domestic Twenty20 cricket worldwide". "It is set to provide domestic cricketers with the ultimate talent showcase, one which I am certain will inspire and motivate future generations of club, state and county cricketers, while accelerating the development of the game globally and the careers of those involved," Modi said. Apart from Modi the other members of the CLT20 Governing Council are N Srinivasan, James Sutherland, Niranjan Shah, Dean Kino and Gerald Majola. — PTI |

Bhullar fires 67, tied 11th
A flawless three under back nine helped Gaganjeet Bhullar card a four under 67 to be tied 11th along with Bangalaore's Anirban Lahiri on the opening day of the $ 3 lakh Brunei Asian Tour event at Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei today. It was steady going for the 21-year-old Kapurthala lad who is riding on a rich vein of form having clinched the Indonesia President Invivational just four days back. He is just three strokes behind Korean Ted Oh and Australian Gavin Flint who share the lead at seven under 64. Bhullar was off to a good start sinking a brace of birdies on the second and third. But then a bogey on the sixth saw him take the turn at one under 34. The Punjab golfer then played a bogey-free back nine studded with birdies on the 12th, 15th and 18th to finish the round at four under par 67. Anairban Lahiri also played a similar card. After teeing off from the 10th the Bangalore lad fired an eagle on the 15th along with two birdies against a lone bogey for a three under 33 score at the turn. A one under back nine gave him a card of four under 67. One stroke behind was Gaurav Ghei followed by C. Muniyappa at two under 69. Chandigarh big-hitter Gurbaaz Mann played a one uner 70 card to be tied 51 after the first round. Digvijay Singhand Rahil Gangjee were tied 75th at 71, with Chiragh Kumar, Himmat Rai and Manav Jaini being tied 98th at one over par 72. Veterans Boonchu Ruangkit of Thailand and Chinese Taipei's Lu Chien-soon rolled back the years with matching 65s to take a share of third place along with Singapore's Mardan Mamat. |
Schumacher ‘back on track’
For Formula One there was only one certainty, one cornerstone of the franchise which stood quite untouchable. So when caught in a turmoil who else would the great but embattled team turn to in the wake of Felipe Massa's career-threatening injury in Hungary? Turning to Schumacher, even at his age of 40, is a not so much a gamble as a reflex n and one of quite impeccable soundness. Ferrari could be counted on for such a response more than any other team because their debt to the implacable German is maybe the greatest, even in the age of diffusers and advanced aerodynamics, ever owed to an individual driver. Of course, even the verdict that he was, "statistically speaking, the greatest driver motor sport has ever known," did not quite separate him from such masters of Juan Fangio, Jim Clark and Ayrton Senna. What did the trick, utterly, was the sense that he was more than a talented man at the wheel. He was also the drive and the spirit of the team, not only the inspiration of the engineers and the pit-lane mechanics but their most demanding taskmaster. He didn't just drive a car, he felt it, smelt it and when it failed was the first to perform a knowing autopsy. He has slightly more than three weeks to achieve race sharpness in Valencia and the next grand prix but, if that sounds like an improbable ambition after three years away from the Formula One track, it is unlikely to trouble him too gravely. A relentless achiever in everything he does, it was unthinkable that Schumacher, the most driven of men, would relax into the undemanding comforts of middle age. The instincts that made Schumacher so unique are not likely to be in need of massive rehabilitation. In accepting the challenge officially yesterday he made it clear that Formula One is no longer at the heart of his universe, but plainly it still occupies a vital place and when the call came from Italy he was apparently already half-tuned to the possibility. "In certain circumstances," he said, "there can be only one response to a situation, and this is true of this one." — By arrangement with The Independent |
Birmingham, July 30 Ben Hawes (1st minute), Barry Middleton (18th) and Richard Smith (68th) scored for the hosts, while Dhananjay Mahadik (8th) reduced the margin for India. After an opening ceremony that included the Lord Mayor of Birmingham meeting the two teams, the match got off amid torrential rain late last night and England got off to a perfect start with a goal inside 60 seconds when Ben Hawes' effort went in off Ajitesh Roy's stick. Two minutes later England earned their first of 10 penalty corners but Ashley Jackson's effort was well charged down by the first runner Vikram Pillay. India recovered soon and responded in kind, earning their first penalty corner six minutes later Gurwinder Singh Chandi's pass found its way to Dhananjay Mahadik, courtesy VS Vinaya's dummy, and the Indian army man flicked it powerfully across James Fair and inside the post to equalise. England took the lead again in the 18th minute after setting the foundations from their fourth penalty corner. — PTI |
