Man gets jail term: Ravi Taneja of Nanak Nagri here has been sentenced three years of rigorous imprisonment for abetting a young shopkeeper, Sanjay alias Devinder, to commit suicide even when only five days were left for his marriage. As per the prosecution  on December 3, 2006, Sanjay, a shopkeeper, committed suicide by jumping before the train number 4525 UP downside KM no. 76/1-2.

Boy crushed to death: A 10-year-old schoolboy was crushed to death under a van at Singhawala village on Saturday. The boy Arshdeep Singh came to the roadside with his father to get the school bus. While waiting for the bus, Arshdeep saw his cousin coming from the other side of the road and he rushed to meet him. But while crossing the road he was crushed under a speeding Mahindra van.

Hawara accomplice remanded: Baljit Singh Bhau, a Babbar Khalsa fugitive and a close accomplice of Jarnail Singh Hawara, an accused in the Beant Singh murder case, was on Friday sent to police remand till August 13 by a local court. He was handed over to the Nabha police by the Delhi police on Friday in connection with a murder and robbery that took place here in May 2009.

Statue of Rao Abhey Singh: Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda will unveil a statue of late Rao Abhey Singh, a veteran politician of the Rewari region and father of local minister Capt Ajay Singh Yadav, here on August 18. He will also inaugurate the newly constructed postgraduate regional centre of MD University, Rohtak, in Meerpur village, newly built Polytechnic Institute in Lisana village as well as the new Police Lines complex here.

3 gangsters held: SP Mahender Singh Sheoran on Saturday claimed that three gangsters identified as Kuldeep and Satish of Murlana village and Tejbir of Chidana, who had allegedly looted Rs 1.50 lakh from Sanjay of Garhi Ujale Khan village on August 4 were arrested by the police. The police has also recovered a pistol, a live cartridge and cover of a fired cartridge from their possession.

Prisoner dies of AIDS: A prisoner died of AIDS at the Government Medical College here on Friday. Official sources said Suba Singh (47) of Bishnah, who had been imprisoned in a murder case, died of AIDS in the hospital on Friday. He was hospitalised three weeks ago after he complained of severe body pain and eventually died on Friday, hospital sources said. Suba Singh had been undergoing treatment at a community care centre of the State AIDS Prevention and Control Society for the past six months, before being shifted to the GMC three weeks ago.

Charak for varsity at Samba: Former Minister for Higher Education Gulchain Singh Charak has appealed to the state government to establish the proposed central university in the land identified for the purpose in Samba district. Addressing a press conference here on Friday, Charak demanded that the proposed IIM should be established in the Kashmir region while the central university should be established in the Jammu region.
