Indifference from SAD irks councillors
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, August 18
Nonplussed over their own status in the party, councillors who had won the MC poll last year as independent candidates and had later been assured of being embraced by the SAD, expressed their grouse to the Chief Minister here today.

At a meeting at the residence of a councillor this morning, independent councillors, including Joginder Singh Tony, Nirmal Singh, Gurdip Kaur and Sunanda Malhotra, urged Parkash Singh Badal to let them know their fate.

The councillors were left in a lurch after it was being felt that their inclusion in the SAD could mar the party’s relation with the coalition partner BJP (whose candidates were defeated by them in the poll).

The councillors told the CM that ever since Mahinder Singh Kaypee had taken over as the acting PPCC chief, they were being offered to join the Congress. “We might think on those lines in case we continue to be treated in a similar manner by the SAD,” they said.

Badal, it is being said, has given them a positive assurance. He has reportedly called them at Chandigarh tomorrow for another meeting.

Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, August 18
Barely a day after chief minister Parkash Singh Badal launched the much-hyped city bus service here, a bus plying on route number 4 broke down midway on Monday morning.

The yellow line bus coming from railway station to Rama Mandi developed a snag and remained stranded for over two hours near the BMC Chowk. Nearly 20 passengers in the bus had to be shifted to another bus that was called to the site. For over an hour, no mechanic was seen at the the spot. Finally, a representative was called from Tata’s local dealer Cargo Motors who found a problem in the fuel pump.

SE B&R Kulwinder Singh, while talking to The Tribune, said it could be a case of sabotage. “The new service is detrimental for the local bus operators. We would be able to ascertain the exact cause by tomorrow. The new buses have come at a price of Rs 20-22 lakh. They have come from Delhi by road and there was no problem on the way.” The officer said the buses would be periodically checked. “We are soon going to have our own workshop at Lamma Pind Chowk and then there will be no problem at all,” he added.

DTO’s denial of VIP nos not right: Consumer panel
Deepkamal Kaur /TNS

Jalandhar, August 18
Upholding the judgement passed last year by the district forum, the state consumer commission has asked the district transport officer (DTO) to pay a resident Rs 20,000 as compensation for not issuing VIP numbers for his cars and refund Rs 16,730 that had been charged from him unreasonably as extra road tax.

The commission found that the consumer was harassed even as both the numbers he had applied for for his luxury cars were available in the AU, AV and AW series but these were not released by the DTO office, making him unable to use his cars for three to four years. In his complaint filed with the district forum, Inderjit Singh of New Jawahar Nagar here had written that he had purchased a Mercedes Benz on July 15, 2004, and a Skoda on April 4, 2005.

He had applied for VIP numbers 0011 and 0009 for his cars. He said the DTO had issued a challan of Rs 3,000 to be deposited in a bank as VIP number charges and another challan of Rs 10,200 as road tax fee for the Mercedes.

For the Skoda, he was issued a challan of Rs 10,000 as VIP number fee and another challan of Rs 10,240 as road tax fee. But despite repeated visits, he was not issued the numbers. His appeal was heard at the high court on February 9, 2006, and an order was passed five months later to release the numbers. But the DTO asked him to deposit an extra road tax at 2 per cent of the value of the cars. He said while he was issued number 0009 for his Skoda after depositing Rs 16,730 as enhanced road tax, the officer also agreed to give number 0011 in the AY series as per court orders but again demanded an enhanced road tax. The consumer argued that the rates prior to April 1, 2006, be applicable in his case as road tax had been increased after he had already paid it.

He had demanded refund of the extra tax deposited for the Skoda car while also a waiver of extra tax on his Mercedes. Earlier, the district forum had directed the DTO to charge road tax fee for both cars as per rates applicable on the date when the registration was applied. It had then asked the officer to issue number for the Mercedes Benz car as PB-08-AY-0011 within one month but the DTO filed an appeal with the state commission.
