Jagran Jitters
Sound trouble: Residents may move court
Tribune News Service

Jalandhar, August 9
Irked over holding of annual jagran in the newly developed park of their colony, the residents of New Jawahar Nagar want the organisers to shift the venue.

Members of the Residents’ Welfare Society said they were not against organising of religious functions. “But they should not cause environmental degradation. The venue must be shifted to the nearby market area or some public place like the Guru Gobind Singh Stadium. Last year, when a jagran was held here, some trees were cut for the setting up of the stage. Add to it, the noise pollution and the chaos is unbearable. We have developed the park at a cost of over Rs 1 lakh. Some more saplings have also been planted. We do not want these plants to get destroyed again,” said Ravinder Kumar Laroiya, president of the society, at a press conference here today. Charanjit Singh Maingi, adviser of the society, said he was surprised as to how the municipal corporation (MC) has given permission for Jagran in the park.

“Just to earn Rs 1,500, the MC has put us to great inconvenience,” he alleged.

The members said they have made repeated representations in this regard to the MC commissioner, mayor and DC but all their pleas have fallen on deaf ears. “In case nothing happens and the organisers go ahead with the programme on September 6, we won’t hesitate to knock the doors of the court,” they said.

Mayor Rakesh Rathore, however, said a political conflict between members of the same society was causing all the trouble.

“Since it’s a religious affair, the MC would not like to interfere. We had earlier asked the members of the colony to develop just half the portion of the park. The idea was to let the remaining portion be used for religious congregations and other meetings. The city does not have many places for holding religious functions. We cannot allow people to put up tents right in the middle of the road and block traffic,” he opined.

“Since we have already given the members permission to hold the function, we can’t do much,” he said.

Rajinder Sehgal of the Maa Bhagwati Sewa Sangh claimed that no trees were cut for the function held last year. This time around everything was fine until the date for the jagran was announced. “We have got MC’s permission and have been holding the jagran for 18 years, I don’t see what’s causing the problem,” he said.

Entrance Exams
Online coaching a boon for small-town students
Parmod Bharti

Nawanshahr, August 9
It's a good news for small town students who are aspiring to prepare for various entrance examinations like IIT, AIEEE, BITS, CET etc., but cannot afford to join the coaching classes at big cities.

Now, they can get tips for preparing for the entrance tests by attending "online virtual teaching sessions" at their homes. The students desirous of attending online teaching sessions just need a PC and a broadband connection to get access to the online class room. AuthorGen Technologies, a Chandigarh-based company which has developed a software called WiZiQ, has made it possible for the students to take online virtual classes. The students have to get themselves registered at www.wiziq.com for registration to attend the online coaching sessions. Harmanpreet Singh, CEO, WiZiQ, says that WiZiQ, in collaboration with APT, a prestigious Hyderabad coaching institute, has launched the online coaching classes from August 4 for the convenience of the students and their parents who are unable to join coaching institutes at big cities.

The concept of taking online classroom sessions has started catching on in the area. Some students who have been attending the online coaching classes, while interacting with 'The Tribune' said they have not only been enjoying the new concept of online classroom teaching but have also been finding it quite useful in preparation for the competitive examinations.

"The interactive teaching with a focus on preparing the students for the competitive examinations is helping us a lot. The method of teaching is quite simple and we are getting important tips for solving our problems in attempting multiple choice questions," said the visibly happy students.

CEO, Harmanpreet Singh says that online coaching sessions for the medical students and IAS aspirants would also be started.
