Fake gallantry certificates did the trick

It has now come to light that serving officers may have submitted false certificates to gain admission for their wards under the gallantry awards quota. Service awards like the Vashisht Sewa Medal (VSM) have been termed as gallantry awards in order to get benefit of the quota. The Tribune is aware of at least two such cases during this year’s admission process.

Lookout notice for Bansal, businessman

The Chandigarh police today issued a lookout notice for Haryana’s additional advocate general Sanjeev Bansal and Delhi-based businessman Ravinder Singh, who are wanted in a case involving the delivery of Rs 15 lakh at the residence of a Punjab and Haryana High Court judge.

We will solve case in less than 72 hrs: IG

Just over four days after law officer Sanjeev Bansal’s clerk erroneously delivered Rs 15 lakh at the residence of Justice Nirmaljit Kaur, the inspector-general (IG) of Chandigarh police has reportedly assured the high court Chief Justice Tirath Singh Thakur that the case would be cracked in less than 72 hours.

Sushil’s kin stage dharna
Chandigarh, August 18
Relatives and friends of Sushil Kumar, who was rescued from the swollen Patiala ki Rao and later died at the PGI yesterday, staged a dharna and disrupted traffic for around half an hour on the road separating of Sectors 25 and 37 today.

Pbi dept students go on hunger strike
Chandigarh, August 18
Students of department of Punjabi, Panjab University, proceeded on an indefinite hunger strike seeking rollback of the decision of university authorities to scrap internal assessment in the department. The students also demanded the university to reconsider its decision to make two subjects, which were earlier optional, compulsory.

Seminar on opportunities in media at SD college

Finance co slapped Rs 25,000 fine
Chandigarh, August 18
The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed a financing company, Royal Capital Services, and its owner Sanjeev Kochhar to pay compensation of Rs 25,000 to a resident of Solan, Himachal Pradesh. The forum has also asked the company to pay Rs 2,200 as cost of litigation.

Labourer's body found
Fatehgarh Sahib, August 18
The body of Munni Lal, a labourer working in Sunny Steel Agro Industries, Mandi Gobindgarh, was found outside the factory today morning. He had reportedly committed suicide in front of the factory. The deceased was a resident of Mandi Gobindgarh and worked in the factory for the past sometime.

The police has booked chief editor and news editor of a vernacular daily newspaper and a writer on charges of hurting the religious sentiments of a community as members of the Punjab Brahmin Sabha staged a protest outside its office.
