Sporadic violence mars polls Bhanu P. Lohumi Tribune News Service
Bathinda, June 30 The bitter clash occurred outside the polling booth in ward No 7, where about 100 supporters of BJP candidate Vasudev Goel allegedly attacked the supporters of Vijay Kumar Goel (Independent), injuring five persons including the president of local unit of SAD, Madan Lal who was pushed and roughed up. The assailants badly damaged two vehicles, a Tata Sumo and a car, and seriously injured Vinod and Pawan, who were rushed to hospital while Honey and Neeru received less grievous injuries. As many as five patrolling parties were rushed to the spot as the situation took and ugly turn and police fired in air to disperse the clashing
groups.
The trouble arose when BJP District President (rural) Dayal Singh Sodhi and BJP Former district president Gurinder Pal Kaur Mangat entered the polling booth and supporters of Vijay Goel objected to it .Later an unruly mob attacked his supporters and the Police failed to intervene effectively. The supporters of Vijay Goel demanded action against Sodhi and Mangat, who were allegedly hiding in a house but instead of booking them, the police allowed them safe passage. They further alleged that the goons were brought from Sirsa by brother of the BJP candidate and the police instead of stopping them showered Lathi blows on us. Another minor incident took place in ward No 13 where the BJP candidate Naib Singh and his independent rival Chiman Lal Punia clashed inside the polling booth. However, the Superintendent of police Nariender Kaushal said that polling was peaceful and no incident took place inside any polling booth. In case any complaint of violence or rigging was received, it would be looked into, he assured. The polling was brisk and heavy right from the start and nearly 70 to 80 per cent voters had cast their votes by 1.00 PM. at various polling stations at Maur, Kot Fatta and Sangat. A large number of voters complained that their votes had already been cast and attributed casting of bogus votes to polling staff which allowed several voters to vote without showing the I-card. On the contrary some voters were not allowed to vote on the pretext of minor discrepancies in the I-card and names in voter list. Mohinder kaur, a voter in ward No 2 in Kot Fatta alleged that her vote was already cast when she reached the polling stations and was not allowed to vote. A reporter, alleged that he was pushed out from the polling station when he went there to see whether the polling was being held in fair and peaceful manner. The polling was by and large peaceful in Sangat and Rama Mandi and no untoward incident was reported from any other area in Kot Fatta and Maur. |
