Rampura Phul, June 28
Punjab Youth Congress president, Vijay Inder Singla today launched a blistering attack on the SAD-BJP combine for ‘rigging’ the Panchayats and Municipal polls and reducing the entire electoral process into a farce.

Singla who was here for campaigning for elections to Municipal councils in Malwa region, slated for June 30 alleged that the elections to Panchayati Raj bodies and Bathinda Municipal Corporation were completely rigged and the SAD and BJP workers indulged in large-scale irregularities and took law in their own hand to ensure victory of their candidates by ‘foul means’

‘What is the use of holding of elections to these grass-root democratic institutions if the people are terrorized and not allowed to vote in a free and fair manner’, he asked.

He asked the government to nominate the members of PRIs and urban local bodies if its sole objective was to win the elections by’ hook and crook’ by misusing the official machinery and displaying money and muscle power in most vulgar manner. It would at least save huge amount of money and time, wasted in election process.

He said that Congress was hopeful of doing well in elections to Municipal councils but if the history of Panchayats and Municipal Corporation polls was repeated, our candidates and supporters would be helpless.

Talking to the TNS, he said that SAD-BJP activists were targeting the Congress workers and their lives were not safe. A Congress worker was severely beaten allegedly by some BJP activists in Batala and died later, he added.

The situation in the state is so worst that even the bureaucrats don’t wish to work in the state and try hard to get a posting in the Centre, he further stated.

Meanwhile the campaigning for elections to Municipal Council came to a close this evening and candidates and their supporters swarmed into their areas for door-to-door campaign in last ditch effort to elicit support.

Bathinda/Muktsar, June 28
“Public health department has been turning down our constant requests to look into the case of sewerage and industrial water of Budha Nallah polluting the canal water,” rued irrigation minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon here today.

Sekhon was here with SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal during his foundation stone laying spree in the district.

While talking to TNS, Sekhon expressed regret over the polluted water flowing in the canals, which caters to the Malwa.

He also flayed the pollution control board of the state for having callous attitude in the case.

Disclosing further, he said that CM Parkash Singh Badal had fixed a meeting where all departments concerned would be called to discuss the matter.

“It is the job of the public health department and pollution control board to keep a check over the guilty polluting the water, but despite our regular correspondence they aren’t ready to get out of deep-slumber,” he alleged.

Answering about seepage and water logging in Muktsar and its surroundings, he said that the CM was regularly in touch with the officials concerned.

Speaking about the reasons of the seepage, he said that the Rajasthan and Sirhind feeders were the main sources of seepage as at least 11,000 cusecs of water had been seeping underground, which could be enough for more than two districts.

To control the menace he said that both the canals needed to have a polythene base to stop seepage.

When asked about the completion of widening of minor canals and distributaries, whose foundation stone have been laid today, he said, “The work will be started after the paddy season. About the reason to lay the stone so early, only Sukhbir Badal can give the appropriate answer.”
