MCD to make power from waste
New Delhi, June 28 The decision follows an appeal of the World Bank made under the global warming project. The system is already in place in western countries and efforts are being made introduce it in developing countries as well. The World Bank has given Rs 2 crore to the MCD for this project. The work has already begun in Ghazipur and Tughlakabad landfill sites. And will soon start in Bhalswa Jahangirpur also. According to the MCD, these gases can be used for power generation. According to MCD sources, if the gases were of good quality, they could be used for power generation otherwise they will be destroyed in the air. According to them, these garbage produce 750 tonnes of gases everyday. If they are used for power generation, the MCD can benefit Rs 400 crore in the next five years. Leader of the House Subhash Arya said, “A foreign firm is surveying the quantity of gas in the landfill sites. Once the survey is done, the contract will be signed.” “The World Bank did not approach the MCD. But it was the MCD that approached the World Bank after some senior engineers noticed their offer on Internet,” he added. The issue of methane gas was raised two years back when the MCD had planned to construct the modern slaughterhouse in Ghazipur. |

Huge rush as admission formalities on
New Delhi, June 28 The deputy dean student welfare, Gurpreet Tuteja, says, “I personally am satisfied with the way admissions are shaping this time round. The rush today at different colleges was huge and I think most admissions will be completed with the first cut-off at least in subjects like commerce and economics honours. However, humanities and science will come out with a second list.” Aditi Jain, an outstation student from Lucknow, says, “I have 93.5% marks from my school and am the topper. I came to Delhi expecting to get admission at SRCC in my favourite subject—commerce, but it seems difficult. By tomorrow I will know what happens.” Aditi’s concerned mother says, “My daughter has scored such a high percentage, still it is proving difficult to get admission in any of the top colleges? The issue of the best of four subjects is not fair. Some students who have a lower aggregate than her but have scored high marks in four subjects get admission and she is waiting.” Sharad Pawar at Hindu College with a 97.7% aggregate on the other hand is smoothly completing his admission formalities, “No, I have faced no problems here,” he says confidently, “I am getting admission in commerce at Hindu and also at SRCC. I just have to decide where to go. It is a very exciting time right now. Most of my friends are also here. After completing the paper work, we plan to celebrate.” “I want admissions in English honours and I think I stand a fair chance of getting it here,” says Arpana Sen as she tosses her hair back and smiles, “The cut-off here at Miranda House is stiff but I expect I should manage it with my 92%. What worries me is getting hostel. I hope I manage to get admission in the hostel. I have come from Calcutta and my father is insisting on hostel.” |

Tihar Jail inmates paint thoughts on tobacco
New Delhi, June 28 Many of the prisoners revisited their hellish past to paint their thoughts on tobacco, drug and alcohol abuse - in a way succeeding where health minister Anbumani Ramadoss failed to do on cigarette packs. “I read in the newspapers that the government was trying to portray stark bad images on tobacco packets. Though I don’t know what happened outside the prison, we have tried to do that,” Ravi, a prisoner who is behind the bars for doping, told IANS. Ramadoss had been campaigning to put scary pictures on tobacco packets to dissuade youngsters from smoking but ran short of support from his senior cabinet colleagues on the issue. “I have been in jail for six months and have realised the value of free life. Once released, I shall never get into the old habit,” Ravi said. The paintings were the result of a weeklong drawing, painting and skit competition organised among the inmates to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26. The Tihar Jail, which houses over 13,000 inmates, is one of India’s most guarded and high-profile prisons, but drugs still manage to find their way in thanks to the connivance of some security men and visitors. Nearly eight percent of its inmates are drug addicts. Two prisoners depicted drugs as the 10-headed demon Ravan and the painting got the first prize. Others depicted drugs as a poison tree with a deadly tongue spewing out AIDS, tuberculosis and even jail for some people. In one of the paintings, a prisoner showed a funeral pyre made up of cigarette butts with the caption, “My past, My life”. “I cannot change the world but can change myself,” the illustration under the painting read. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime is helping Tihar handle its drug addicts and persuade them to give up the habit. “Look at the paintings...they speak of their past lives. But one thing is for sure - they are remorseful of their past. This will lead them towards a better life,” Jayadev Sarangi, UNODC prison expert, told IANS. Showing his creative skills, Rakesh, another prisoner, painted a tobacco pack with the caption “Swagat Tobacco bad for health” and painted the smoker as a cancer patient. The tobacco pack is shown with a skull and cross bones. One painting shows a bottle of whiskey with four or five snakes inside, another shows an injectible drug user as a hapless beggar. Some even painted pictures of beautiful women, with the caption “No need for drugs.” “We have a full fledged hospital for drug de-addiction and we try to let our inmates display their creative skill to help them come out of drug dependence,” added Sunil Gupta, the law officer of Tihar. — IANS |

Street dogs get rabies shots today
New Delhi, June 28 In association with Sonadi Charitable Trust, the organisation is conducting a free anti-rabies drive for stray dogs in the Vasant Kunj area tomorrow. “This is our first initiative and we are planning to cover 200 dogs in Vasant Kunj. We are going to take some dogs for sterilisation also,” said Vasanthi Kumar, managing director, STRAW. The organisation believes that killing and dislocating dogs is not a substantial alternative. “Killing or dislocating dogs to other areas also removes the already sterilised dogs. The new dogs that arrive in the area are mostly unsterilised. They produce litter and in order to protect themselves might bite the residents of the area and spread rabies,” said Vasanthi. While taking sensetisation campaigns to the schools and individual residents, STRAW issued some guidelines to keep localities free from rabies. The residents should adopt stray dogs and take initiatives towards cleaning garbage dumps. Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) can also take the responsibility of sterilising the dog population of the respective areas. STRAW appealed to the residents of Vasant Kunj area to cooperate by getting the stray dogs to the anti-rabies camps for vaccination. The camp would be organised tomorrow at the Vasant Kunj sports complex. |
