Alliance sweeps MC polls

Cong rout in Patiala
Patiala, June 30
The ruling SAD-BJP washed out the Congress in Sanaur and Samana. More than 80 per cent polling was recorded. Out of 28 wards where results were declared today, the SAD-BJP combine took 22 seats while the Congress managed only one seat. Five seats went to Independent candidates.

Setback for SAD-BJP in Pathankot
Pathankot, June 30
The BJP has received a big jolt in the defeat of its district president Satish Mahajan, former president of Pathankot municipal council. Mahajan has been defeated by Congress greenhorn Anil Sharma from ward number 5.

Legislator’s family feud goes public
Chandigarh, June 30
The mother and sister of sitting Congress legislator Randeep Singh Nabha have alleged ill-treatment by the him, who they claim threatened them with taking their life if they asked for their share in the “ancestral property”. The family has been on a “warpath” since 1988 when his father Gurdarshan Singh, a former Punjab minister, died.

On the basis of research on the life of Moran, a nautch girl from the Lahore gharana, whom Sikh ruler Maharaja Ranjit Singh had married, the government is contemplating changing the name of the historical Pul Kanjiri to Pul Moran.

An alleged threat issued to Jagwinderjit Singh Grewal, local SDM, by Jagdish Sawhney, chief parliamentary secretary, over an election-related issue has triggered off a controversy. The SDM has written to the chief secretary in this regard.

PCCTU condemns attack on Prof of DAV College

The Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers Union (PCCTU) has strongly condemned the brutal attack on Prof K.S. Arya of DAV College here. In a press statement here today, the union alleged that the police chowki concerned was not taking any action against the accused persons and putting political pressure.
