Independents spring a surprise in 3 towns

The SAD-BJP alliance won the MC elections in six towns of district. Independe- nts sprung a major surprise in Ahmedg- arh where they won 12 out of 15 seats, defeating Congress, SAD and BJP.

In Khanna, no clear winner
Khanna, June 30
The elections in Khanna were peaceful barring a few incidents of minor violence. The SAD and the Congress won 10 seats each while the BJP won five. Independents got two seats.

Over 75 pc polling in Doraha
Doraha, June 30
More than 75 per cent polling was reported till 3.30 pm here today. Tehsildar ,Payal, Mandeep Singh Dhillon, said voting was more or less peaceful and no untoward incident was reported from anywhere in Doraha.

5 sustain burns as transformer catches fire
Ludhiana, June 30
Five persons sustained burns and some cattle were reported to have died following electrocution after a 33 KV transformer supplying power to the Air Force station at Halwara caught fire yesterday.

SSP orders probe

SSP R.K. Jaiswal today ordered an inquiry into the Bittu drowning case. The 10-year-old boy had died after drowning in a pit dug by the Punjab Urban Development and Planning Authority (PUDA) in Dugri on Saturday.

Drug addiction is on the rise amongst schoolchildren with most of them having an easy access to drugs and alcohol in the absence of check by law enforcement agencies.

Veggies on the boil

Heavy rainfall has hit the supply of vegetables leading to a 20 per cent to 50 per cent rise in their prices within the past two weeks. Common man is in for tougher times as prices may zoom further in the coming days, said experts. The past two weeks have seen a significant rise in prices of vegetables like cauliflower, green pea, bottle gourd, cucumber and capsicum.

Parks in bad condition
Parks and green belts provided by PUDA in Phases I, II, III of Urban Estate are in a bad condition. Wild growth and waste material can be seen all over the parks most of which are without boundary walls. Some of the residents have managed to maintain a few parks in front of their houses from their own pocket while others continue to face the callousness of the authorities.

Two Bangalore residents have allegedly duped a local trader of Rs 5.10 lakh by giving a fake draft as payment for a machine.

The newly introduced professional courses in both government colleges of the city are attracting a large number of students. Students prefer to join BCA, BCom to the traditional BA, BSc courses if the sale of forms for different courses in the government colleges is any indication.

The summer camp that was being held at Love Dale came to end with a function Le Baron today. Principal of Love Dale Prittama said: ''Though the camp did not witness any summer as the weather God was kind to shower rains throughout, the camp helped and inspired students to go through interesting and intensive training schedule.

Navroop Kaur Bajwa, student of Baba Jaswant Singh Dental College, Hospital and Research Institute, Ludhiana, has topped the state in the BDS final-year examination conducted by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences, Faridkot, by securing 987 marks.

Patients counselled on obesity
Doraha, June 30
Around 100 patients attended the 4th obesity support group meeting at a local hospital here yesterday. Hospital director and chief of surgery Dr Gurdip Singh Sidhu emphasised the importance of obesity support group and said it was created to bring people, who have undergone sufferings due to obesity, on one platform and address their sufferings.

The Deaf Cricket Federation, Punjab, will organise Dosti Cup Cricket Tournament between Punjab XI (India) and Punjab XI (Pakistan) from July 2 to 6, according to federation general secretary Padam Passi.
