Essay on Ramayana
New Delhi, March 26 The essay by the celebrated translator and poet shows that the story of Rama has more than one version. The story has been told differently in various communities of South and Southeast Asia. Leader of opposition Jagdish Mukhi asked the Chief Minister through Speaker Chaudhary Prem Singh that she should talk to the vice-chancellor of Delhi University and union minister of human resources development to get deleted the controversial portion from the history book. He said that whatever is written in the book “Culture In India: Ancient” hurts the feelings of Hindus in the whole world. This book was compiled by Dr Upender Singh. |

Murder of encounter speciallist ACP Rajbir Singh
New Delhi, March 26 He said it was very difficult to say for sure whether the bullet was fired from the front or back unless the scene of crime was studied thoroughly. However, as the forehead of the deceased had a clear-cut hole while the back had a large hole, it can be estimated that the bullet was fired from the front, Sharma said. He said the second bullet just grazed the left temple above the ear and did not do much damage. According to Sharma, Singh might have survived the injury if he was not hit by the bullet which went through. Real estate agent Vijay Bhardwaj, accused of having shot the Delhi Police ACP after an altercation with him on money issue, was meanwhile remanded in police custody for two days. He was produced in a Gurgaon court of chief judicial magistrate-cum-additional civil judge Arun Kumar Singhal who granted a remand for police investigation. |

Property dealer alleges cheating
Ghaziabad, March 26 Chaudhry has his office in B-36 in DLF colony in Dilshad Garden. Harish Chaudhary’s associates Anil Kumar, Kapil Kumar and Rakesh Kumar live in Bhagwan Enclave of Delhi. All the four property dealers had signed a deed for the purchase of a plot with one Rajesh Sharma resident of A-104 Vigyan Vihar in Anand Vihar. Rajesh Sharma had assured them that he could buy a 210-sq mt plot, No A-131 in Jhilmil Colony, New Delhi. He had allegedly shown fictitious documents of the plot to the property dealers, they said. The plot was stated to be worth Rs. 60 lakh at that time. After this the property dealers had given Rs 10 lakh to Rajesh Sharma on April 10, 2007. But later enquiries revealed that the plot shown was owned by Rajinder Singh Malik of Jalandhar and Rajesh Sharma had nothing to do with the said plot. When Harish Chaudhary and his friends pressurized Rajesh Sharma to return their Rs 10 lakh, he gave them a cheque for the amount, which bounced at the bank. It was alleged in the FIR that Rajesh Sharma was not only refusing to return their money, but was even threatening all the four with dire consequences. SO in-charge Sahibabad police station said Rajesh Sharma’s real name was Ajay Sharma. |

Stay goes on recruiting DU teachers
New Delhi, March 26 A division bench of Justices T.S. Thakur and Siddharth Mridul, while vacating the stay, asked the institutes to abide by the Disability Act in future too. But the court refused to lift the ban on other Delhi University colleges that have not implemented the Act as yet. The recruitment of staff members in the Delhi University administration, Shyam Lal College and Delhi University Vocational Studies College will be on after the stay was lifted. Some colleges submitted that despite placing advertisements in newspapers they had failed to get the adequate response from candidates. The court asked the university registrar to prepare a list of colleges which are ready to provide three per cent of vacancies to the disabled candidates and submit it by May 21. The stay on the recruitment of the teachers in colleges was slapped a year back following a public interest petition seeking implementation of the law on quota for disabled candidates. The court April 4, 2007 restrained the university and all its affiliated colleges, which failed to provide three per cent reservation for disabled candidates, from recruiting faculty members.—IANS |

Panchayat land worth Rs 1 bn restored
Gurgaon,March 26 A state government spokesman said here on Wednesday that R.K. Mishra and his wife of New Delhi’s Vasant Vihar sold 10 acres of prime ‘panchayat’ (village council) land in village Bajghera of Gurgaon to the Sri Shankar Siksha Yatan Trust in May 2001. This was done with the condition that an educational institution would be set up on this land within two years and the land would not be sold to anyone. However, the trust did not set up any educational institution on this land and the village panchayat filed a petition with the district collector December 2005 seeking return of the land. The trust sold the land off to another resident of the village in March last year. The panchayat complained to the district collector again. In his order, District Collector Rakesh Gupta ordered the trust and the buyer to vacate the land and declared the panchayat as the owner. Gurgaon is a bustling suburb of the national capital and has seen unprecedented economic boom in the last few years. This is not the first instance of the Gurgaon district administration intervening in saving costly land from falling possibly into the hands of land mafia. In January this year, a 19-acre piece of land worth several millions of rupees in village Badshahpur was handed over to the panchayat after administration got it vacated from a big construction company. Another 2.5 acres of land was also saved earlier in the same village from the land mafia.—IANS |

New Delhi, March 26 The case came to light, when the trio— Mahesh Mishra, Vikram and Ramesh—all residents of C 1/25, C 1/40 and C 1/38 Madhu Vihar respectively, visited the BSES’s vigilance office and narrated the sequence of events. They also confessed to tampering with their electricity meters. Narrating the case, they said on January 17, 2008, an inspection by BSES enforcement teams found their electricity meters tampered. The following day, they were visited by two persons Vinod Kumar and Sanjay Anand posing as BSES officials. They reportedly informed them that cases of Dishonest Abstraction of Energy (DAE) have been booked against each of them for tampering with their meters and power theft bills of around Rs 2 lakh are being raised against each of them. The imposters offered to settle the case on a payment of Rs 70,000 each. The deal was finally stuck for Rs 30,000 each for reducing their bills and installing new meters. The impostors again visited the trio to collect the settled amount, install new meters and hand them enforcement bills. They even handed over the Meter Change Reports (MCRs) to the consumers for their newly installed meters. They also promised to give the three residents letters from the BSES’s enforcement department, intimating the closure of the enforcement cases again them. The residents grew suspicious when even after six days, the promised intimation letter from the enforcement team did not come. They then decided to visit the enforcement department themselves and enquire. At the BSES enforcement office, to their utter astonishment, the trio of Mahesh Mishra, Vikram and Ramesh were told that the DAE cases against them were still on and no bills had yet been processed. They were further informed that the bills and MCRs provided to them were fake and that nobody had been authorized to visit them to settle the case. The trio then realized that the alleged BSES officials who had visited them were in fact impostors. The trio also informed BSES officials that they had managed to locate the address of Sanjay Anand, one of the impostors, but had not found him there. |

He said, “Triumphant march of the Akali Jathas and their victory in the Keys’ Affair was hailed by Mahatma Gandhi as the first decisive victory of the forces of nationalism.” Gujral also complimented the author on presenting an account of the Akali movement and the role of Baba Kharak Singh in a brief but lucid style and urged publisher National Book Trust that these books should be published in Hindi and other regional languages of India. In his remarks, Mohinder Singh highlighted two essential features of the Akali struggle—non-violent and non-communal nature of the movement and the role of Press and the public opinion. In this regard, he paid glowing tribute to the past Akali leaders for their vision and mentioned that it was S. Mangal Singh who gave up his government position to start “The Hindustan Times”. “The Tribune especially its Trustee Prof Ruchi Ram Sahni, greatly contributed in creating a favourable opinion for the Akali movement through the columns of The Tribune. Leaders of those times also purchased shares in daily “The Nation” that was published from Lahore,” he said. Speaking in panel discussion, former pro-vice-chancellor of Guru Nanak Dev University P.S. Kapur said while Akalis made major contribution towards the movement of non-violent and non-cooperation not much was known about their contribution outside Punjab. He complimented the author on highlighting the essential features of the five-year Akali struggle between 1920-25, linking it with the larger movement for country’s independence. Political scientist Harish Puri discussed the role of the Akalis in the larger Indian context and lamented that the Akalis have not been able to uphold their glorious tradition of secularism and nationalism. Prof K.L. Tuteja highlighted Baba Kharak Singh’s role in the freedom movement, stressing that while other leaders changed their loyalty with the changing times, Baba Kharak Singh stood like a rock so far as his nationalism was concerned. |
