Chaat Sammelan at JNU today New Delhi, March 20 Organisers start looking for a donkey, days in advance. The winner, most boring of all the participants, is taken around the campus on this donkey at the end of the sammelan with a barat of students dancing on the beats of dhol. Shahzadi Ibrahimi, popularly known as Mamu and a few others conceptualised the idea of Chaat Sammelan way back in 1993. Mamu now runs a dhaba on the JNU campus after completing his PhD from the university. “We were all in the Jhelum Hostel then, when we came up with the idea,” recalls
Mamu. “I could not be defeated for six years, so I was declared Chaat
Samrat. But younger chaats were not getting enough appreciation and then I decided not to participate anymore.” Mamu is now a permanent judge for the occasion, where he goes dressed in a Samrat’s (king) attire. “The idea of the Chaat Sammelan could be traced to the folk traditions of different states in North India,” said Prakash from the School of Arts and Aesthetics and the senior-most chaat on the campus at present. One can also categorise it as urban folk tradition that has been reinvented.” Prakash has been participating in the sammelan since 1997. “However, we do not allow any nonsense here. Chaat Sammelan is a progressive, democratic platform, where no rude remarks of a sectarian outlook are tolerated,” said
Prakash. Being part of a gender-sensitive JNU community, the organisers made special efforts in getting women participants all these years and finally, succeeded last year with one entry. “We ensure that no patriarchal remarks are made from the stage. We want the girl students to participate in the
sammelan,” said Prakash. The festivities for Holi would end on Saturday in JNU with bhang-laced celebrations on the Ganga Hostel

He had boarded the train at Ballabgarh railway station. He works in a shop in Ballabgarh. According to him, the passengers soon got friendly during the course of the conversation and they said that they could offer a better job to him. Before long they made him inhale something and he became unconscious. When he regained consciousness, he found himself at Ayodhya. He was then taken to Akbarpur near Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh and handed over to the eunuchs. He alleged that the three persons threatened him with dire consequences if he did not obey them while on the way to Akbarpur from Ayodhya. He further alleged that he used to be sexually exploited by his captors and was made to beg during the day in the surrounding villages of Akbarpur. Ghaziabad safe haven for terrorists
Ghaziabad, March 20 The arrest of Hapur resident, Javed by Delhi police from Jama Masjid area has again proved that terrorists are finding their hideouts in Ghaziabad as safe havens. Many past incidents have proved that terrorists’ network in Ghaziabad is far superior to that of official agencies. That is why terrorists like Abdul Karim Tunda and Javed have been accomplishing terrorist strikes while local police have been oblivious of their designs. About 20 years ago, Kashmira Singh had exploded serial bombs in 1987 in Sahibabad, Apsara border and Shahdara areas. He had exploded cycle bombs in seven places then and he himself was also blown into shreds while transporting such bombs on a cycle. During 1988, four persons including a woman were killed in a bomb explosion in DTC bus at Hapur Mode tri-junction. This time terrorists exploded car bombs. One woman and a man had died in this explosion near Kaushambi. During 1989, a bomb exploded near Duhai in a bus from Delhi to Meerut and during 1991, a bomb exploded near Modi Nagar. Fifteen passengers were killed in these explosions. Bombs in these buses had been planted at Delhi bus stand. The biggest explosion took place in Chhatisgarh Express train going to Punjab in 1994 which claimed the life of 19 persons. After these explosions the name of Abdul Karim, alias Tunda, of Pilkhua came up as a dangerous terrorist. Tunda’s name was linked with Mumbai serial blasts also. Due to pressure and hot chase by police and intelligence agencies, Tunda reportedly crossed the border over to Pakistan. Tunda was rated as a mastermind for manufacturing bombs. Even the killers of Punjab Chief Minister, Beant Singh also took refuge in Ghaziabad after accomplishing their task. |
