Doctor loses home for refusing sex test, brings up twin girls
New Delhi, March 15 That was two and a half years ago. Ritu (name changed) and the twins were thrown out of their home in West Delhi. But the fight that began with two unborn children is far from over. “I am facing a lot of hardships. My husband has thrown me out of home. But still I am proud of what I have done. I am proud to have saved my daughters,” said Ritu, who lives in the national Capital. Nearly one million female foetuses are aborted every year in India — a country known for its male preference — which means over 2,700 girls die every day before even seeing the light of the day. But thanks to Ritu, at least two girls have got a chance to live. Ritu got married in 2004. Both she and her husband are doctors and her in-laws are well educated. “We came to know that I was carrying twin babies. Then my mother-in-law started demanding sex determination. They got that done by force. Then they started demanding that I get an MTP (medical termination of pregnancy). They asked me many times to at least get one child killed in utero,” Ritu, 33, told IANS. Ritu alleges that her mother-in-law told her, “Two daughters would be a big burden on them”. She accuses her husband of verbally abusing her and claims she was virtually put under house arrest when she decided to disobey their diktat. Now, she is living with her 72-year-old father, who is also a doctor, along with her children. “I am living only because of my daughters,” said Ritu, her eyes brimming with tears. But she often feels scared. “I am scared! They want to kill me. They have deployed detectives to record my activities. But, for the sake of my children, I have not filed a police case against my husband and my in-laws,” she said. “I have informed the Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) and taken legal counselling from a High Court lawyer. I have also availed myself of counselling from the Navjyoti Counselling Centre of Kiran Bedi. “But I have requested all of them not to initiate action against my husband and in-laws. I want to give my husband another chance as my children need their father,” Kumar said in a choked voice. Pragya Routray, a Delhi High Court lawyer, who has counselled Ritu and her husband, said, “It is a serious case. Her husband can be charged with forced sex-selection, pressurising her to go for female foeticide and, above all, domestic violence.” “But the problem is that she wants to reconcile with her husband for the sake of their kids. On one hand she is scared of the man and on the other she wants to give him another chance,” Routray told IANS. Bijayalaxmi Nanda, an activist working against female foeticide who has also been counselling Ritu, said that like any other Indian woman she wants to give her husband one more chance but a “reconciliation sounds very unlikely”. “They don’t trust each other. The man has been torturing her for so many years and even threw her out of home. I think this should be the last chance for the man. He may be in a noble profession (medical practitioner) but he is not behaving like a good human being,” said Nanda, a professor at Miranda House. Ritu said that she was worried about her children’s future. “I am not working anywhere, as I am not in a good psychological condition. “I tried to shift out with my husband, but I started receiving threatening calls that my daughters and I would be murdered if I did not divorce my husband,” she added.

Kashmiri Pandits protest against Yasin
New Delhi, March 15 The police detained at least 10 of the protestors near the conclave venue at Taj Palace and took them to the Chanakyapuri police station before releasing them. The invitation to the chairman of the pro-independent Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front had angered the activists. Malik was a guest speaker at ‘Youth Forum - If I Could Change The World’, organised by India Today media group. Among others who shared the dais with Malik were actor Preity Zinta, politician Sachin Pilot and industrialists Anand Mahindra and Aditya Mittal. Even inside the venue, a member of the audience objected to Malik’s presence, saying he was a terrorist and should not be allowed to speak. Malik is accused of killing Kashmiri Pandits that led to the exodus of around 300,000 of them to other parts of India in 1990. “Yasin Malik has scores of criminal cases from murder to kidnapping to hawala (money-laundering) racket pending against him,” said Aditya Raj Koul of the Roots in Kashmir (RIK) that had organised the march. “Even today he (Malik) had to appear in four TADA-related cases, which are under the CBI investigation for the more than 18 years,” Koul told IANS. He added, “Killers cannot be glorified”. Rashneek Kher of the RIK, who was among the detained activists, said, “We would not allow a brutal killer to share the stage with the who is who of the world.” “What will he teach the youth?” Kher questioned.

BJP seeks amenities for fourth floor dwellers
New Delhi, March 15 Union urban development minister Ajay Maken has tried to mislead people by saying that occupants of the fourth floor would get relief. The government does not provide total exemption on floor area ratio by amending Master Plan 2021. The Supreme Court’s condition that constructors of the fourth floor would have to submit an affidavit would be like a sword of demolition on them, Delhi unit BJP president Harsh Vardhan said. Under such a condition nobody will invest money. Even banks will not grant loan. Only 10 per cent of the population will get relief from the Supreme Court’s order, he said. He said that the BJP has been trying to provide relief from sealing and demolition just after coming to power in the MCD. The corporation had also submitted an affidavit in this regard. There are lakhs of houses in Delhi, which are more than 15 metres high. Such houses can be found in Rajinder Nagar, Lajpat Nagar, Old Delhi, Pulbangash, and Sadar area. An amnesty scheme alone could give relief to people living in these areas. |

WIFW day 4: Celebrities walk the ramp
New Delhi, March 15 While Celina cat-walked for Khushali Kumar in a long, heavily embroidered purple dress, the other stars set the ramp ablaze for designer Manav Gangwani at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW). “I love the outfit that Khushali gave me,” Celina said. “She has tastefully embellished the chiffon, sheer net dress with intricate embroidery on the back, arms and front.” For the collection, Khushali had skillfully created textures and surfaces through crumpled and smoked effects, pleating, quilting and metallic acetates. Other fabrics used included georgettes and embroidered laces. The colour palette ranged from powder pinks, muted beiges, hints of pale blue to eternal blacks. While silhouettes were both fitted and flowing, there were also short dresses, floor-length gowns, off-shoulder and skin-tight dresses. “I had drawn inspiration for my collection from the luxurious styled gowns for the Oscar’s, modern art, Japanese floral prints and trance and rock culture,” she said. An amalgamation of the essence of Sunset Street in Los Angeles and the film ‘Sunset Boulevard’ inspired Manav Gangwani. The street is known for its glitzy nightlife, restaurants and nightclubs. “My collection defines the rich, famous, glamorous and ultra chic people. It is more of evening and cocktail wear,” Gangwani said. Asked why he incorporated four celebrities for the show, he said, “If you follow the film, there are four characters in it and so to portray that I had four of my best friends walk the ramp for my show.” The colour palette encompassed black, coral, ivory, burgundy, grey and mossy green. The show kicked off with Soha walking the ramp, flaunting an ivory coral dress with orange sequins embroidery. Models then sashayed down the runway decked in balloon sleeved jackets, net sleeved dresses, bubble jackets, gathered and textured dresses, long and cropped jackets, pleated bubble skirts and blouses of varied styles and designs. The men’s collection offered digitally printed, bubble ‘bandgala’ jackets, trousers and shirts with broaches. “My men’s wear line is a bridge line between classic and contemporary,” he explained. Fashion guru Malhotra was next, wearing a black jacket with purple appliqué embroidery teamed with black trousers. Sophie then walked in donning a black bubble dress, made of 60 metres of cloth. “It is very heavy,” remarked Sophie. Zayed Khan concluded the show sporting a black velvet jacket with intricate orange embroidery teamed with straight trousers. Coral embroidery, sequins work, mother of pearl buttons, beads, Swarovski crystals teamed with jewel pieces inspired from the Russian Czarist times were used to embellish the garments.

BJP rally to check Cong sway
Faridabad, March 15 The Haryana unit of the BJP is understood to have planned to highight the problems of the farmers, paticularly in the state, in the rally. The added reason for the BJP to make the Jind show a success is the ruling Congress in the state emerging as the biggest contributor in terms of mobilisation for the just concluded farmers’ rally in Delhi. The farmers’ rally was organised to felicitate the Congress leadership for waiving the small farmers’ loan of about Rs 60,000 crore as per the proposals in the Budget for the next financial year. The BJP rally will be addressed by its prime ministerial candidate in the next general election. L.K. Advani will also address the rally. Reports say that the BJP leaders in South Haryana, encompassing Faridabad, Gurgaon, Rewari, Mahendragarh, Jhajhar waded themselves against the pro-farmers’ budgetary proposals during the ongoing mobilisation campaign for the rally. They point out that the prices of grain and other edible commodities have increased after the budgetary proposals were made. Regarding the future prospects of the BJP, the strong
opinion in the party is that the debate on the farmer issue will help emergence of some leaders in the state. BJP has apparently put greater focus on
Rohtak, Jhajhar, Sonipat, Jind and Bhiwani Gurgaon, Rewari, Mahendragarh and Faridabad disticts for mobilisation of the Jind rally. Several quaters in the BJP are said to be impressed with the public response to the “Vijay Sankalp Yatra” recently completed by it in the state, especially in the Manjauli (Faridabad)-Meham (Rohtak) sector, spanning six crucial districts. The areas covered are mainly part of hinterland in the state. Also, the Yatras launched from three places fall in the rural areas. The Haryana BJP’s Vijay Sankalp Yatra programme also came in for praise from Rajnath Singh who was in Rohtak, a few days ago. The ruling Congress in Haryana, however, does not seem to be disturbed by the BJP’s political moves. The Congress leaders say that the party’s popularity among the farming community remains intact on account of both pro-farmer policies of its government in the state and the UPA government at the Centre. The Congress leaders who are upbeat on “pro-farmer” Budget assert that there have been two great occasions of emancipation of the farmers: one during the time of legendary Sir Chhotu Ram, who is an iconic figure of the farming community and, now during the Congress rule in Haryana and the UPA governent headed by the party at the Centre. They further say that the Congress will continue to
espouse the cause of the farmers.

90 plants supply impure water in Noida
Noida, March 15 No norms or quality checks are being followed by these companies in manufacturing and marketing bottled water to people nor there is any supervision of this trade by health or other government agencies. Some companies are known to be using the empty bottles of some reputed mineral water brands to sell their poisonous product. Over 9 lakh bottles are daily supplied through 45,000 bottles of 20-litre each by 90 bottling units in Noida. Most of the bottles marketed in the town have duplicate labels and even ISI markers. According to sources, so profuse is the influx of illegal mineral water bottles in the city that one cannot make out which is duplicate. According to one source, since the duplicate bottle manufacturers offer higher commission to retailers, they are tempted to palm off the duplicate water bottles which are a great health hazard to the people. The duplicate bottling plants offer double the commission, say Rs 10 to 15 as against Rs 5 to Rs 7 for a 20-litre bottle, the unscrupulous shopkeepers are also in league with the illegal manufacturers. |
