First ‘snow flake’ baby born in holy city
Sanjay Bumbroo Tribune News Service
Amritsar, November 21 Dr S.S. Chawla, director, Satjot Reproduction and Research Centre, in a press note said here today that this was the first of its kind in the region and there were two more similar ongoing pregnancies. He explained that in the procedure sophisticated technique of controlled-rate freezing (using special cryologic machine) was utilised that slowly cools the surplus embryos in anti-freeze solution from body temperature down to -196 degrees celsius at which they were stored in containers of liquid nitrogen. They were brought back to body temperature just before use, he added. Dr Chawla said the frozen embryos look like flakes of snow and nearly every fourth woman has surplus embryos during test tube baby procedure. He said though the success rates employing these were slightly lower than those with the fresh embryos but it had several advantages. The doctor further said it dramatically reduces the cost of test tube baby procedure for future attempts, enables the improved cumulative success rate, lowers the rates of multiple pregnancies and helps prevent ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome. |

Meanwhile talking to The Tribune, the branch president of NRMU bridge workshop, Jalandhar cantonment, Manjeet Singh said, “Nirmal Singh and Bhupinder Singh were expelled four years ago from NRMU as they were involved in anti-union activities.” |
Standardising Hindi teaching in USA
Chandigarh, November 21 Heading the project is Susham Bedi, a Punjab-born professor and founder head of the department of Hindi at Columbia University, now heading the US committee for standardising Hindi. A leading South Asian author, academician and actor, Susham has published eight novels and has, during her teaching tenure of 22 years, developed authentic Hindi reading and listening comprehension materials for students. In Chandigarh today on the invitation of the Readers and Writers Society of India, she spoke to The Tribune about the project, which the American Council on Teaching for Foreign Languages is supporting. “It’s a big project for us -- one that will ensure a unified Hindi teaching material for institutions across the USA. Right now there is complete lack of coherence and the learners of Hindi are a confused lot. We will standardise teaching texts and tools so that there is conformity,” says Susham, who has borrowed from the NCERT the text of Hindi syllabi developed by it. “We are looking at all kinds of available texts. Eventually, they will be modified to suit the needs of our students. We have to use functional Hindi considering our students are not growing up in a “Hindi” atmosphere,” says the author, famous for writings about the Indian diaspora settled in the USA. |
