Dress code: Law students up in arms
Noida, August 25 Some 20 students who were not wearing advocates’ dress were turned out of the law classes and, later, from the campus of the university. It had resulted in a big chaos on campus. According to students, the college management was harassing them on the pretext of dress code. Besides, they were being penalised with fines. The daylong tumult had created tension on campus. A large number of security guards were employed to control the situation. A college spokesperson said that a dress code— black pants, white shirt and lawyerr’s jacket has been prescribed for the law students on Monday and Friday, when they are required to argue cases like advocates. The law faculty feels that it will help the law students develop confidence as advocates. The 20-odd students, who came in causal dresses were immediately ordered out of the classrooms. The students said they felt insulted when ordered to “get out”. They demanded appropriate action against the management and later started raising slogans. Students from inside the class also joined them as also students from some other classrooms. The management later ordered them to leave the campus. Incidentally, this is not the first agitation against a dress code at Amity. A few months ago, there was a strong protest from girl students which was joined by male students also against the ban on wearing of jeans. The students said this protest against dress code would continue till the authorities withdraw their order. |

Plan to make DU tobacco-free
New Delhi, August 25 Dr G R Khatri, president-WLF-SA stated that globally about five million people die every year on account of tobacco related causes and these deaths far out number all deaths on account of TB and HIV combined. According to a survey, 31 per cent males and 7 per cent females of Delhi colleges are smokers. About 5,500 adolescents start using tobacco every day, joining 40 lakh under 15 who already use tobacco regularly. This alarming data reiterates the fact that youth are becoming more susceptible to tobacco consumption. With 90 per cent of lung cancer cases caused due to tobacco consumption, it has become imperative to generate awareness about the ill- effects of tobacco consumption, especially among the youth. Dr Khatri, stated that unless urgent actions are taken, tobacco deaths in India may exceed 4,100 per day by 2020. With this background and encouraged by successful organisation of massive tobacco awareness march on December12, 2006 in Delhi University, WLF-SA has formulated a two-year project targeting to make North Campus a tobacco free area. Project envisages a package of strengthened awareness campaigns including street shows and hoarding, group sensitisation. |

Programme on climate change for schools
New Delhi, August 25 Children from schools of Delhi presented their points of view on climate change, which is one of the most critical environmental challenges the world is facing today. The objectives of these workshops are to educate and motivate students across the country, to contribute in a meaningful manner towards reducing their contribution to global warming and to inculcate leadership and motivation skills for promoting energy efficient lifestyles, eco-friendly attitudes. According to secretary general WWF-India Ravi Singh, “the programme was a unique initiative - first and possibly the largest single activity on climate change among students in India.” The programme aims to reach over 50,000 students in 200 schools in one year and make them aware about the issues of climate change and the importance of energy efficiency. “By reaching out to the younger generation, we expect to kindle the harbinger of new hope to mitigate this significant threat to our environment,” he said. Climatic changes that are taking place and those predicted are largely human induced. People are using too much resources and in an inefficient way. By burning fossil fuels inefficiently increasing amounts of Green House Gases (GHGs) are released into the atmosphere every year, way beyond nature’s capacity to absorb them through its natural processes. This has caused unprecedented levels of global warming which has led to the problem of climate change. WWF’s recent publication Climate Solutions: WWF’s Vision for 2050 identifies key solutions and pathways for reducing the level of GHGs in the atmosphere in a planned and phased manner to increase the probability of avoiding dangerous climate change. |
