Gurgaon, August 22
Gurgaon, the millennium city of Haryana ,has two faces. One is of Singapore like dazzle created by the hi-tech modern buildings. The other is of poorly maintained roads, and electricity .The other basic amenities are not even better than a village.

The area around the corporate establishments, malls and townships , impress an outsider ,but when one turns around the poor basic amenities stick out like a sore thumb.

Sources in the administration informed that two years back the Haryana government and the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), had decided to incur a sum of Rs 766 crore for carrying out external development of the city.

A plan was mooted that the money collected from EDC will be used for sewerage, water supply, solid waste management, sector roads, storm water drains, electrical works as well as colleges, hospitals and sports complexes.

But the promises remained on the paper only.

An industrialist said that because of power shortage the industrialists here were planning to shift to Rajasthan.

He further pointed out that public transport system in Gurgaon was almost negligible. No taxis or auto rickshaws ply in new Gurgaon. Citizens have to on their personal transport.

Former chief secretary of Haryana,M C Gupta ,said that the service roads which have been encroached upon by builders, need the government’s attention. Almost all important roads in the city remain jammed throughout the day, he added.

There are virtually no storm water drains in new Gurgaon resulting in water-logging, damage to roads and traffic problems, particularly in the rains. There is hardly any system for rainwater harvesting, leading to severe depletion of ground water resources.

According to HUDA sources, a sum of Rs192.63 crore had been spent on these schemes till May this year. An action plan of Rs776.70 crore had been formulated till 2009.

Sources said that the target of current year for construction of roads of 300 km, water supply-125 km, sewerage-1000 km and storm water drainage-80km.

CM for renewable energy
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 22
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has appealed people to preserve natural resources and use new and renewable energy sources.

Speaking on the Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Divas- 2007, she exhorted children to propagate the message for using renewable energy sources as natural resources were not going to last long.

The celebration was organised by the energy research institute (TERI) and the union ministry of new and renewable energy. Union minister for state for new and renewable energy Vilas Muttemwar and director general of TERI Dr R.K. Pachauri also addressed schoolchildren.

August 20, the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister late Rajiv Gandhi is being observed as Rajiv Gandhi Akshay Urja Divas since 2004. On this occasion, marathon runs, mass rallies, human chains and competitions are organised in various towns across the country.

Dikshit added that her government had been granting Rs 6,000 for the purchase of solar water heater to individuals to promote the alternative source of energy. She said that the team comprising schoolchildren and energy conservators would be constituted and directed to inspect hotels and other buildings where the installation of solar energy equipment had been made mandatory.

Besides, the government has been encouraging the construction of green buildings in the Capital for the Commonwealth Games. The CM complimented children and eco-clubs in making Delhi the greenest city in the country. Delhi has been able to curb pollution by providing the largest CNG public transport fleet.

The growing consumption of energy has made the country increasingly dependent on fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas. The rising prices of oil and gas and the potential shortages in future is a matter of concern for the security of energy supply needed to sustain the country’s economic growth. An increased usage of fossil fuels causes environmental problems. Against this background, the country needs to develop a sustainable path of energy development, the CM remarked.

The promotion of energy conservation and the increased use of renewable energy sources are the twin planks of a sustainable energy supply.

The accused Rashid Khan, Mushtaq and Bisharat were arrested from the hotel, while they were selling the shawls to a customer. A car of one of the accused was also seized.

A press release from the Wildlife Trust of India noted that the accused had brought the shawls from Kashmir to Delhi for selling them in the international market.

It added that they had covertly advertised the products on the Internet to attract international buyers.

“The traders are now being interrogated by the CBI,” vice chairperson of the Wildlife Trust of India Ashok Kumar said.

Despite an international ban on shahtoosh and repeated seizures of shahtoosh shawls in the UK, US, Hong Kong, Nepal and Dubai, the trade continues in the Kashmir valley, where the government is turning a blind eye to the flourishing business.

“The seizure shows that shahtoosh wool still reaches Srinagar in Jammu and Kashmir, though enhanced enforcement in Tibet and trade routes was believed to have resulted in a lower volume of shahtoos .

Sealing :BJP for concerted action
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, August 22
BJP Delhi Pradesh president Dr. Harsh Vardhan has said besides the MCD, the union urban development ministry and the Delhi government should also go to the Supreme Court to save 40 lakh residents of unauthorised colonies from the sealing drive.

He said that the BJP was against demolition and sealing anywhere in Delhi. By implementing amnesty scheme in this regard all the buildings, shops etc. constructed so far should be declared regularised.

Harsh Vardhan said that the people had made additional structures due to increase in the number of family members. The Congress had announced in its election manifesto that it would not allow sealing and demolition.

The BJP leaders in the civic body have apprised the union urban development minister about their feelings. Sealing should be stopped. The DDA and the land acquisition department should petition the apex court to end the sealing drive.

The Master Plan of Delhi -2021 was notified in haste, without taking seriously the sealing issue. This is the reason why the Master Plan has not been implemented as yet.

If the Congress really wants development and welfare of citizens, it should implement the amnesty plan so that the additional constructions made by the people so far may be legalised.

He said that 40 per cent of the people of Delhi do not have houses of their own. “The DDA is behaving like land mafia instead of providing houses and flats to the people. It is earning crores of rupees by auctioning the plots and the people who have made additional rooms due to family requirements are facing sealing and demolition”, he said.
