Alleged misbehaviour with Amritsar resident’s wife resulted in the scuffle

Two persons were injured in a clash between two groups in a city hotel on Friday night. According to sources, Gurwinder Singh Bhatti of Amritsar came to a hotel to celebrate his wife’s birthday. Gurwinder Singh Lovely of Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar here was reportedly also taking a drink in the same hotel.

Inhabitants of Kamalpur blocked traffic for more than three hours at local government college crossing today to show their resentment against the police for not taking action into the missing of a 17-year-old student of 1st year of COE course of ITI, Hoshiarpur.

Hoshiarpur, August 18
In a rage, a villager of Bassi Hasat Khan killed his 9-year-old son, when he did not wake up from his sleep despite repeated calls made by his father. According to the police sources, Joginder Singh tried to wake up his son Gurjit Singh in the morning and went outside the house to milk goats.

One dies, 2 hurt in wall collapse
Phagwara, August 18
One laborer was killed while two others were injured when an under-construction wall fell on them in the Shakti Nagar area on Saturday afternoon. The deceased Jinder was a resident of Jharkhand while supervisor, Inderjit Singh, a resident of Jalandhar and another labourer Salem Tuti, a resident of Jharkhand were rescued from the debris.

Intelligence, law & order wings to part ways

With a view to improve the efficiency of the Law and Order and Investigation wings the Punjab Police would be soon separating the two wings. This was stated by the ADGP Punjab Chander Shekher here today.

DD to air spl shows on freedom struggle

National Safai Karamchari Commission chairperson Santosh Chaudhry has urged the chief ministers of all states of the country to provide basic amenities including drinking water to the Safai Karamcharis and accelerate the woks for their upliftment.

A district level civil-military liaison conference was organised at Jalandhar cantonment, here today. During the conference the army authorities highlighted the issue of unauthorised construction around the ammunition depots within the area of 980 metres from the periphery.

Two persons were injured in a clash between two groups in a city hotel on Friday night.

According to sources, Gurwinder Singh Bhatti of Amritsar came to a hotel to celebrate his wife’s birthday. Gurwinder Singh Lovely of Guru Teg Bahadur Nagar here was reportedly also taking a drink in the same hotel. It is alleged that Lovely tried to misbehave with Bhatti’s wife. Subsequently, a scuffle took place between the two over the issue.

The SHO of police division number four Vibhor Kumar said that Lovely called some of his associates and they thrashed Bhatti and his companion Sam. They also took Sam forcibly with them in their car and threw him near a dhaba on Phagwara road.

The SHO said a case has been registered against Lovely and his unknown aides.

Missing Teen
Kamalpur residents allege cop inaction, disrupt traffic

Hoshiarpur, August 18
Inhabitants of Kamalpur blocked traffic for more than three hours at local government college crossing today to show their resentment against the police for not taking action into the missing of a 17-year-old student of 1st year of COE course of ITI, Hoshiarpur.

They parked tractor-trailers, scooters and motorcycles across the crossing. However, the police did divert the traffic through other roads. The blockade got lifted only after the intervention from DSP (H) Tilak Raj, who assured that police would make every effort to search Vikram.

Vikram Singh’s father Sohan Singh of Kamalpur, who runs an auto-spare parts shop on the Phagwara Road, said his son had left for ITI at 9 am yesterday on his bicycle to collect his roll number.

But at around 11.30, Sohan got information that his son had not reached the college, after which he along with other family members searched for Vikram but without success.

Later, at about 3:30 pm they lodged a complaint with the Model Town police station in this connection. But, the residents said the police had not taken any action so far. Sohan said though he had not received any call from any person so far, he suspected that his son had been kidnapped.

The Model Town police station has registered a case under Section 364 of the IPC, said DSP Raj.

Hoshiarpur, August 18
In a rage, a villager of Bassi Hasat Khan killed his 9-year-old son, when he did not wake up from his sleep despite repeated calls made by his father.

According to the police sources, Joginder Singh tried to wake up his son Gurjit Singh in the morning and went outside the house to milk goats. When Gurjit Singh did not respond even on repeated reminders of his father, enraged Joginder Singh threw a sharp edge tool inside the room which slit the throat of his son. After the incident Joginder Singh fled from the scene and his son died after some time.

Rajwant Kaur, mother of the deceased Gurjit Singh, informed the police which took the body in its custody and sent it to the local civil hospital for postmortem. Sadar Police has arrested Joginder Singh and booked him under Section 304 of the IPC. — OC

Meanwhile, 10 persons were injured when the three-wheeler they were traveling to Ludhiana from Jalandhar overturned near Khajurla on Saturday evening. The tempo was also carrying wheat bags. The injured have been admitted to the civil hospital.

Intelligence, law & order wings to part ways

Phillaur, August 18
With a view to improve the efficiency of the Law and Order and Investigation wings the Punjab Police would be soon separating the two wings. This was stated by the ADGP Punjab Chander Shekher here today.

Adding that the investigation wing would be made accountable, Shekher said SP (D) would be deputed for the purpose. Commenting upon the Law and Order situation in Punjab, Shekher said the peace in the state would be maintained at every cost.

When asked about the threatening letters, received at various places in the state to regarding the blasts at several important, sensitive and religious places, the ADGP said the letters were exposed as anonymous but, no compromise would be made regarding the security.When asked about few allegation of opposition parties that police was allegedly misused at some places during the civic elections, Shekher said few complaints of partiality were received from few places and concerned police officers have been asked to act sternly.

When asked about increasing crime related with drugs and narcotics, smuggling, fake currency rackets, fake travel agents and human traffickings, ADGP said the complicated situation of Pakistan and Afghanistan should be studied minutely, but Punjab Police was determined to prevent all adverse effects of the complicated situation in both the countries. He claimed that community policing was becoming popular among residents. — OC

DD to air spl shows on freedom struggle

In a bid to accord their tribute to countless martyrs of freedom struggle and to commemorate the completion of sixty years of the Independence, the Jalandhar Doordarshan Kendra and All India Radio (AIR) are going to present a special series of programmes on the freedom struggle of the country.

In a statement issued by the Doordarshan Kendra some newly envisaged programmes would also showcase the ways to increase awareness among people about protection of environment.

Besides, both the DD and the AIR have been advised to make documentaries on the life of veteran writers and men of letters by the programme advisory committee of the two national broadcasters. A meeting of the committee was presided over by A.K. Tikkoo, the Superintending Engineer of the Jalandhar Doordarshan here today.

“The members of the advisory committee have recommended steps for strengthening of culture of Punjab. They have advised the DD and the AIR to come out with such programmes, which could inculcate humanism and increase level of ethics among people apart from development of scientific point of view,” said the statement.

National Safai Karamchari Commission chairperson Santosh Chaudhry has urged the chief ministers of all states of the country to provide basic amenities including drinking water to the Safai Karamcharis and accelerate the woks for their upliftment.

Talking to newsmen here on Saturday, she reiterated her commitment to end the social evil of lifting night soil by scavengers, by the end of March 2009, and appealed to the heads of all states to practically co-operate for this noble cause. She expressed her concern over scavengers being forced to lift night soil on the heads.

A district level civil-military liaison conference was organised at Jalandhar cantonment, here today.

During the conference the army authorities highlighted the issue of unauthorised construction around the ammunition depots within the area of 980 metres from the periphery. The officials also discussed the issue of intelligence sharing with regards to ISI agents and terrorist outfits. The civil administration also requested to keep the obstruction lights of various towers functional to ensure safe air movement of air crafts and helicopters.
