Chandigarh, July 15 While supporters of Bishnoi claimed that their leader could not come to Shahabad because he was not well, his detractors insisted that he skipped the public meeting because of the poor turnout. In the absence of Bishnoi, Congress MLA from Gohana Dharam Pal Malik was the main speaker at the Shahabad rally, according to reports reaching here this evening. In a statement issued here today, Congress MLA from Shahabad K.L. Sharma thanked the people of his constituency "for ignoring" Bishnoi. "By doing so the people of Shahabad have proved that like other Haryanvis, they too have a confidence in the policies of Sonia Gandhi and Bhupinder Singh Hooda," Sharma added. He said the people of Shahabad had exposed those who were making false and baseless allegations against the Central and state leadership of the party. In a separate statement, general secretary of the media cell of the Haryana Congress Lakhvinder Singh Lakha claimed that Bishnoi was put off by the poor turnout at the rally. To save himself from embarrassment, he did not come to Shahabad on the pretext of being ill. Organising secretary of the Haryana Congress Surinder Hooda accused Bishnoi of acting as an agent of business rivals of the Reliance because the MP did not want the development of the national capital region falling in the state. |
Villages to get more drinking water
Chandigarh, July 15 It was disclosed at the meeting of the State Sanitary Board held here recently under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda. In addition, 4 lakh water connections would be provided to Scheduled Caste households under the Indira Gandhi Drinking Water Scheme. Rs 90 crore would be spent for drinking water supply to 503 villages of Mewat area under the Rajiv Gandhi Augmentation Drinking Water Project. Besides, providing water supply facilities at 70 model villages, sports stadiums would also be taken up. Public health minister Randeep Singh Surjewala disclosed that the state government had decided to incur a substantial amount of about Rs 693 crore to improve the water supply and sanitation system in the rural as well as urban areas of the state during the current financial year. Out of the total expenditure, assistance to the tune of over Rs 60 crore was being provided by the Central government. A sum of Rs 467.50 crore had been allocated to rural drinking water schemes and another sum of Rs 133.56 crore had been released for urban water supply and sewerage schemes. A sum of Rs 335.56 crore had been allocated to 1,297 ongoing rural water supply schemes under various programmes. As many as 1,277 schemes would be completed during the current financial year. Similarly, in the urban areas, a sum of Rs 47.47 crore had been allocated to 109 ongoing water supply and sewerage schemes. Besides, a sum of Rs 75 crore had been allocated for ongoing schemes of water supply and sewerage in eight towns falling under the national capital region. Surjewala said 713 new rural water supply schemes had been approved at a cost of Rs 203.42 crore. For the urban areas, 16 new water supply schemes, costing Rs 5.23 crore and 16 new sewerage schemes costing Rs 21.36 crore had been approved and funds to the tune of Rs 1.68 crore and Rs 9.39 crore, respectively, had been allocated. Another Rs 2 crore would be spent on the IEC and HRD activities under the water quality monitoring and surveillance programme for ensuring safe drinking water to the public. |

Ambala, July 15 Under the campaign, Bharat nirman programme, national rural employment guarantee scheme, national rural health mission, sarv shiksha abhiyan and universal day-meal programme, welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, Prime Minister’s 15-point programme for minorities, women and child development programme, right to information Act and Jawahar Lal Nehru national urban renewal mission will be highlight. Giving details, she said the public information campaign in Naraingarh subdivision of the district would be conducted from July 28 to August 1. She added that two such campaigns had already been conducted in Sirsa and Mahendergarh districts of the state. She advocated that the five-day Bharat nirman campaign would be divided into three segments. The first segment would include installation of stalls by government and nongovernmental organisation. Representatives of these departments would disseminate information about the schemes, programmes and success stories to the masses. Each department would be provided with a stall free of cost at the
venue. Mandaus added that the second phase of the campaign would include auditorium-based programmes like seminars, lectures on important topical issues conducted by local MPs and MLAs, government officers and other eminent personalities to highlight the development activity of their respective areas. The third segment of the campaign would consist of visits by field officers to villages where competitions, contests and rallies would be arranged and special cultural awareness programmes would be organised. |

Shifting of meters boosts revenue
Chandigarh, July 15 Giving this information here today a spokesman of the nigam said in view of the success achieved in this campaign, field officers had been directed to speed up the shifting of meters outside the consumer premises. The meters were now being installed on poles or public places at suitable locations. He said the nigam had initiated many schemes to minimise the losses which included installation of energy meters on distribution transformers for energy audit, erection of HVDS/LVDS, rehabilitation of overloaded feeders and registration of tubewell and domestic load of feeders supplying power to rural areas. He said any cut in cable supplying power to the consumer would amount to pilferage. The nigam had fixed a target of bringing down the losses to 33 per cent from the existing 40 per cent during the current year. It has been planned to bring down the losses to 15 per cent during the 11th plan for which necessary steps had been initiated, he added. He said the nigam also plans to supply electricity either through High Voltage Distribution System (HVDS) or underground cables in all residential sectors to be set up by the Haryana Urban Development Authority in future with a view to bring down amalgamated transmission and commercial losses. The possibility of power supply through the HVDS was being explored in the existing HUDA sectors also, he added. |
Mini-secretariats at subdivision level: CM
Rohtak, July 15 This was disclosed by Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, after laying the foundation stone of the third phase of the local mini-secretariat to be constructed at a cost of Rs 14.31 crore here today. The Chief Minister directed officials of the Public Works Department to ensure that the third phase of the mini-secretariat was completed by August 15, 2008. He said this secretariat would have five stories and 19,000 square metre covered area, besides a parking facility. Meanwhile, Hooda also laid the foundation stone of the Faculty of Humanities on the premises of Maharishi Dayanand University here today. The building would be constructed within a year and would have Hindi, Sanskrit, English and journalism departments. Hooda said the Haryana government had earmarked a sum of Rs 115 crore in the plan budget for higher education as against Rs 64.70 crore during the last year. A sum of Rs 26 crore had been incurred on the various developmental works in the government colleges during the past two years while a provision of Rs 14.70 crore had been made during the current financial year. He added that a business school would be set up at Guru Jambheshwar University in Hisar. |

Chandigarh, July 15 To further boost the health of girls in the state, Haryana health minister Kartar Devi said all schoolgirls up to the age of 18 years would be provided free and compulsory health checkup. The minister said ‘Janani Suvidha Yojana’ had been implemented in eight districts of the state. Under the scheme women living in slums in urban areas would be provided free of cost delivery facilities in selected nursing homes. She said a mahila worker, Sakhi, would work as a bridge between the government and nursing homes. With the consistent efforts of the department, the death ratio of mother and child had decreased. |
Teenager beaten to death
Fatehabad, July 15 The accused suspected that the deceased had stolen their mobile phone. The police has booked the accused, who absconded after committing the crime. Sandeep (19), son of farm labourer Dharam Pal, worked as a helper at ‘Sarpanch Vaishnav Dhaba’. Dharam on reaching the dhaba noticed that Ram Kumar, Raju and Madan Lal had tied his son with ropes and were beating him with sticks. The three fled from the scene when they saw Dharam entering the room. Sandeep succumbed to his injuries by the time Dharam tried to untie the ropes. |

Woman hacked to death
Jhajjar, July 15 According to information, the woman, Satwanti (25), wife of Ranbir Singh, was found dead in the fields of the village. She has reportedly gone to the fields to bring silage for the cattle on Saturday evening. When she did not return, her family members launched a hunt and found her lying in half naked condition in a pool of blood. The body was handed over to the relatives today after post-mortem examination.

Ambala, July 15 Dr Varun Saluja, who hailed from Hansi, died when a Himachal Pradesh Roadways bus near Kalpi village on the Jagadhari road hit his motorcycle. He died while being taken to the hospital. A case has been registered. Earlier this month, two final-year MBBS students, Ark Twickley and Sanjay Verma, were killed when their motorcycle collided with a tractor-trolley near Barara. |
