Chelmsford, July 15
England Lions proved that India’s impotent bowling attack has neither the zing nor the sting as the three-day warm up cricket match between them petered out into a drab draw here today.

Chasing an improbable 258 runs in the last hour, India reached 91 for one in their second innings. At draw of stumps on the final day, Wasim Jaffer was not out on 22 while Yuvraj Singh was batting on six.

Dinesh Karthik (51) was the lone Indian wicket to fall after he had scored a scintillating half-century off just 45 balls stroking eight boundaries. He fell to leg spinner Adil Rashid as he charged down to play a shot but hit it straight to Ravi Bopara at short covers.

The hosts had declared their first innings at 413 for eight and it took a magnificent 171-run knock by stop-gap skipper Sachin Tendulkar, which propped up the visitors' response as India posted 383.

Overall, this was a lamentable performance by the Indian bowling attack, which could not bowl out the hosts even once in the match.

Delhi pacer Ishant Sharma cut a sorry figure. Apart from going wicketless in the match, the lanky bowler bowled a staggering 27 no balls in the match, including 15 in the first innings.

England Lions declared their second innings at 227 for two, half an hour after tea, setting an improbable 258-run victory target for India on the final day at the Essex Country Cricket ground here today.

Owais Shah 77 (156 balls) and Jonathan Trot 31 (82 balls) were at the crease when the declaration came. The pair added 87 runs for their unbeaten third wicket partnership.

Earlier in the day, India were all out for 383 runs in their first innings in reply to England Lions score of 413 for eight to concede a lead of 30 runs.

Resuming at their overnight score of 336 for seven, India were all out 40 minutes into the days play conceding a lead of 30 runs.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who resumed on 44, duly completed his half-century before using the long handle. He brought up his 50 with a brace off Graham Onions. It took him 73 balls and he hit five fours.

Dhoni then opened up his shoulders and hit Onions for a six over long leg. He then subjected Stuart Broad to similar treatment, hitting him over mid-wicket before straight driving him for a four. The bowler had his revenge when he clean bowled him off the very next ball. Dhoni made 76 off 84 balls and hit seven fours and two sixes. — PTI

Sachin in no hurry to retire

London, July 15
Sachin Tendulkar says his opting out of the inaugural Twenty20 World Championship does not signal a possible imminent retirement from other forms of the game as well, at least for the time being.

Ever since India’s disastrous World Cup campaign in the Caribbean earlier this year, there has been calls for Tendulkar to hang up his boots.

With captain Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble and VVS Laxman also in the mid-30s, critics and former captains have stressed on the urgent need for blooding youngsters.

And when Tendulkar, 34, along with Dravid and Ganguly, told the selectors that they should not be considered for the Twenty20 tournament in South Africa in September, it prompted the media to debate about the end of an era.

But the record-breaking batsman himself says retirement is the last thing in his mind at the moment.

“I have kept things very open. I don’t want to divide my energies in various directions. I just want to focus on playing cricket,” Tendulkar told The Sunday Times here.

“I have not thought about where I might stop. I don’t think it is the right time to think about that.”

Tendulkar dismissed the oft-repeated question about his slowing reflexes and difficulties against fast, short-pitched bowling, saying he was “more or less the same” batsman he was five years ago.

“Obviously ... playing close to 400 one-dayers and 140 Test matches has taken its toll,” he was quoted as saying.

“After playing for 18 years, there are a few niggles, but you learn to deal with them. I am sure most players are not 100 per cent (fit).”

He also defended his record in recent years, which his detractors feel has been meagre without the big scores against Bangladesh.

“It is probably the way people have looked at things. I think I have done reasonably well. Maybe the expectations are too high and unrealistic,” he said.

Tendulkar, leading the side in the absence of injured Rahul Dravid in the three-day match against England A, came to the rescue of his side with a majestic 171 at Chelmsford yesterday.

His 63rd first-class ton helped the team recover from 65 for 4 and reach 383 in reply to the hosts’ first innings total of 413 for 8 declared.

Tendulkar, probably on his last tour of the Old Blighty, predicted a tough contest in the three-Test series and the seven ODIs that were to follow.

He had high regards for Monty Panesar, the first Sikh to play Test cricket for England. “I have been watching Monty Panesar on TV, he is terrific,” Tendulkar said.

“He has done a fabulous job for England but it is going to take time for him to graduate to the next level and be regarded as one of the best of all time. But he surely has it in him.” The Indian maestro recalled the left-arm spinner’s dismissal of him in Nagpur last year. It was Panesar’s debut Test and Tendulkar became his maiden scalp. — PTI

Copa America
Mexico clinch bronze

Caracas (Venezuela), July 15
Mexico exploited the 38th-minute expulsion of Uruguayan captain Diego Lugano and rallied for a 3-1 victory that gave El Tri third place at the Copa America.

Cuauhtemoc Blanco converted the penalty to equalise after Lugano was issued a red card for elbowing Gerardo Torrado, and Omar Bravo and Andres Guardado added second-half goals to assure Mexico of finishing third or better in four of the last five South American championships.

Sebastian Abreu gave Uruguay the lead in the 22nd minute, heading in Maximiliano Pereira’s cross.

But after Blanco equalised, Bravo lifted a shot over the hands of goalkeeper Fabian Carini, who was racing off his line, in the 68th minute, and Guardado sealed the victory with a left-footed shot from 25 metres in the 76th.

Mexico finished third in 1997 and 1999 and lost to Colombia in the 2001 final.

El Tri, which lost to the USA in the CONCACAF Gold Cup two days before the start of the Copa America, have reached the semifinals five of the seven times they have been invited to the South American championships as a guest.

Coming off its penalty-kick loss to Brazil in the semifinals, Uruguay struggled after Lugano’s expulsion to maintain possession and feed attacker Diego Forlan.

Uruguay came to Venezuela with a strong, Europe-based team, eager to claim a record 15th title.

“We played a good game, started out dominating, and then in one minute everything changed,” said Uruguayan coach Oscar Tabarez.

Jyoti, Jeev tied 29th

Loch Lomond, July 15
Jyoti Randhawa recorded three bogeys from the 14th and 16th holes, thereby slipping to the tied 29th place with a card of one-under 70 in the third round of the Barclay’s Scottish Open at the Loch Lomond golf club.

Compatriot Jeev Milkha Singh, who will be the lone Indian at the forthcoming British Open, brought in a round of even-par 71 to be tied with Randhawa.

The Indian duo was nine shots behind world number three Phil Mickelson, who shot a three-under 68 to be 12-under 201 for three rounds. Frenchman Gregory Havret was lying second.

Randhawa had an excellent front nine where he had three birdies on the second, sixth and seventh holes.

A bogey on the 10th hole was followed by a birdie on the 11th, but three successive dropped shots from the 14th to the 16th ruined his round, even though he did get another birdie on the 17th.

Jeev bogeyed the second and birdied the third. Thereafter, he had three more of each and now has a total of three-under 210. — PTI

Newport (USA), July 15
American legend Pete Sampras, who captured a record 14 Grand Slam singles titles, was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame here.

The 35-year-old American headlined the class of 2007 which also featured Spain’s Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario, a three-time winner at the French Open, and Sven Davidson, the first Swedish player to win a Grand Slam title at Roland Garros in 1957. Photographer Russ Adams, who covered the sport for 50 years, was also inducted.

Considered one of the greatest players in the men’s game, Sampras won a record 14 Grand Slam crowns, including seven at Wimbledon.

The youngest winner in the history of the US Open at 19 in 1990, the Californian also won five titles at Flushing Meadows and two more at the Australian Open. However, it was his failure to reach the top at the French Open that has kept the 35-year-old Sampras from being thought of as the best ever.

Along with his Grand Slam success, Sampras held the world No. 1 ranking for a record 286 weeks, including a streak of 102 weeks that has been bettered by only Federer.

In all, Sampras finished with 64 singles titles, including five from the season-ending ATP World Championships - a record he shares with Ivan Lendl.

The first Spanish woman to win the US Open title in 1994, Sanchez-Vicario finished an 18-year career with a total of 14 Grand Slam titles, including 10 in doubles.

She was just one of four women to be ranked No. 1 in the world in both singles and doubles at the same time, accomplishing the feat on February 13, 1995. — AFP
