Rattia rally
Fatehabad, July 7 Bharpoor Singh Khalsa, a member of the seven-member Dharam Prachar Committee of the SGPC, who came to Rattia as special emissary of the Sikh clergy, announced this before mediapersons in the evening today. Earlier in the day, Khalsa had faxed details of five proposed sites to the Sikh clergy for their approval. The sites were sheds of grain market, a piece of land belonging to the local gurdwara in the heart of Rattia town, grounds of the local Guru Nanak Academy, a piece of land in front of the local Dera Satsang Bhawan and the Ajeetsar Gurdwara situated on the outskirts of Rattia town. The district authorities had been trying to influence the organisers from the very beginning to go for the Ajeetsar Gurdwara site as it was easier to manage a crowd at an open place. The authorities feared it might create trouble in case the Sikh organisations struck to their stand of holding the rally in the town. The authorities were also wary of the site situated in front of the dera building as it could have led to confrontation between the two groups. Khalsa, who had been holding meetings with the representatives of the Sikh organisations since morning today, kept the authorities on tenterhooks till evening. Khalsa told mediapersons in the evening that the venue has been approved by the Sikh organisations after deliberations held at Takht Damadama Sahib today. He said that the July 11 rally would be held under the auspices of the five Sikh high priests and claimed that a large number of Sikhs would participate in the rally. The district administration, meanwhile, has speeded up its preparations for the management of law and order during the rally. The authorities have requisitioned all dharamshalas at Rattia and Fatehabad town to house extra police force and paramilitary forces. The police sources said 20 companies of police and paramilitary forces were expected to arrive soon in the district. |
Rattia
rally Chandigarh, July 7 Though the action has shifted from Punjab to Haryana, the political leadership and bureaucrats, including police, of the two states have been in constant touch with each other, besides keeping a watch on the developments. The Centre in its advisories to both Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Parkash Singh Badal want them to use their good offices to maintain peace and law and order at all costs. Sources reveal that the two Chief Ministers had met last week at the instance of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The chances of Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Parkash Singh Badal meeting again before the proposed July 11 rally at
Rattia in Haryana cannot be ruled out. While a section of Haryana Sikh leadership wants the venue of the rally shifted from Haryana to one of five Takhts, other section has appealed to the Sikh sangat to join the Ratia rally in a “peaceful manner”. The Sikh clergy has given a call to the Sikh sangat to attend the Ratia meeting where decision on the future line of action against the Dera Sacha Sauda would be taken. |

Parliamentary secy goofs up at press meet
Karnal, July 7 As she was unable to answer the questions asked by mediapersons, the district officials and MLA Sumita Singh intervened to lessen their own discomfort but to no avail. Rathore was here to inaugurate a two-day fair, ‘Overseas Education Fair-2007’, where representatives from various overseas universities and colleges participated. The function was organised by the Overseas Placement Bureau (OPB), the state-run agency that provides guidance and other related help in getting jobs and admissions abroad. Rathore faced a tough time today when she goofed up her reply for the question that whether the state government was indulged in through the bureau. She said the bureau was helping the families who were keen to send their wards abroad for their bright future. Much to the discomfort of the present gathering, she put up a strange argument saying: “As largely students from the middle class families are going abroad through us, it cannot be considered as brain drain.” The bureau officials also introduced 14 students to the Press, who got admission in hotel management programmes at a college in Cyprus. When asked that whether the bureau ensures that the said academic programmes were recognised in India, she messed up again and added that the students going to Cyprus for studies actually intend to settle down there. Quoting the example of Punjab, she said that people from Haryana should explore the bright opportunities overseas and bring foreign exchange to India. |
Panchayats to be rewarded for curbing untouchability
Chandigarh, July 7 Disclosing this at a state-level Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting held on Wednesday Chief Minister, Bhupinder Singh Hooda said an all out effort would be made to improve the status of SCs and STs in the state. Accordingly, the budget provision of the scheme Panchayat Protsahan under which the reward incentive is given has also been enhanced from Rs 4 lakh in the last financial year to Rs 30 lakh for the current financial year. Three panchayats in each district are rewarded for this purpose. The government will hold seminars throughout the state to sensitise the people against untouchability. He said the people of Haryana had already shown a significant indifference to this disgraceful custom, which was a healthy development. Nevertheless, he emphasised, that strenuous efforts should be made to completely eradicate this practice and prevent the occurrence of even the stray incidents. Earlier, the financial commissioner and principal secretary, Social Welfare, Ms Shakuntla Jakhu briefed the Chief Minister about the progress made under the provisions of the Act. She informed that a sum of Rs 19.25 lakh had been given under the inter-caste marriage scheme to those SC boys and girls who had married non-SC boys and girls. |
Patil’s meeting venue
raises eyebrows
Chandigarh, July 7 The meeting, participated by Haryana Congress MLAs and MPs, was to take place at the Pradesh Congress Committee office. It was shifted to Haryana Niwas since the arrangement at the former was found wanting. Sampat Singh, a senior leader of the opposition INLD and former Haryana finance minister, said holding the meeting at Haryana Niwas, a government facility, was an unbecoming affair. “It was not in accordance with the propriety expected in the case of presidential elections,” he said. K.P. Gujjar of the BJP, who was leader of the party in the last Assembly, also decried the decision to hold the meeting at Haryana Niwas. “A government establishment should not have been used for an election meeting,” he said. He said he would consult legal experts about filing a petition to the election commission on the issue. Satwanti Ahlawat, director, Hospitality Department of the state government, said Haryana Niwas could be hired by anyone on payment. “It can be hired by private people also,” she said. The meeting, organised by the Haryana Congress Legislature Party, is a success as far mobilisation of MLAs for the UPA candidate is concerned. Deputy chief minister Chander Mohan, son of the disgruntled Congress leader Bhajan Lal, punctually turned up at the venue at 7 pm and put an end to the speculation of Bhajan Lal faction of MLAs keeping away from the event. Dharampal Malik, another MLA considered close to Bhajan Lal, did not turn up but said his absence does not mean that he did not support the UPA nominee. An unexpected participant in the meeting was Naresh Yadav, the only independent MLA in the Assembly who has not formally given support to the Congress-led government. Yadav said CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda called him seeking his support for Patil. |

Residents form human chain to press demand
Hisar, July 7 The chain was part of their monthold campaign to press their demand. Earlier, they had resorted to several Gandhian ways to voice their opinion. Schoolchildren of the area had taken out a prabhat pehri here a few weeks ago. This was followed by a vociferous protest when the entire colony reverberated to cacophony raised by thousands of residents blowing whistles, playing musical instruments and beating drums, canisters and utensils. Narendra Sharma who is spearheading the campaign said the residents had now decided to demand setting up of a hospital, a stadium and a community centre in the area in addition to the school proposed to be built at the disputed land. Despite being the biggest colony of the town, it lacked even basic civic amenities, he said. The Jindals had bought the 20 acre plot in open auction for Rs 4.05 crore in May. However, the deal ran into rough weather when INLD leader Sampat Singh termed the deal as “the biggest land scam in Haryana” alleging the land worth Rs 500 crore was offered to the industrial conglomerate for a pittance. The Jindals bought the plot in open auction in which the only other bidders were societies run by the Jindal family. The SDM who chaired the auction had noted that the bid could have been much higher if other bidders had participated in the auction. — TNS |
