Gurdwara panel writes to Akal Takht Jathedar
Chandigarh, July 6 The Haryana Sikh Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee (ad hoc) has written to the Jathedar of Akal Takht, pointing out that the convention at Ratia can endanger peace in Haryana. Therefore, the committee urged him to hold the convention at any of the five takhts. The committee assured the Jathedar that if the convention was held at one of the five takhts, Sikhs from Haryana would also participate in it in a big way. The letter was signed, among others, by patron and president of the committee, Sampuran Singh and Jagdish Singh Jhinda, respectively. Jhinda is also a member of the SGPC from Haryana. The others who signed the letter included Didar Singh Nalvi, Ravinder Kaur, Avtar Singh Chaku, Jagdev Singh and Baldev Singh Khalsa, all members of the SGPC from Haryana; Gurcharan Singh Sirsa, Karnail Singh and Malkit Singh. Informed sources say, a meeting of the committee was convened at Dera Kar Sewa, Kurukshetra, yesterday to consider the situation created by the convening of the Sikh convention at Ratia. Nalvi, who is the moving force behind the Haryana committee, proposed that the committee should write to the Jathedar of Akal Takht urging him to hold the convention at one of the takhts instead of Ratia keeping in view the law and order situation in Haryana. The sources say some members had reservations about the proposal. They were of the view that the committee should not involve itself in this controversy. However, later the view of Nalvi prevailed and an 11-member committee under the convenership of Joga Singh, senior vice-president of the Haryana Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee was formed to draft the letter. Each and every word was carefully weighed so that the committee could not be accused of being disrespectful to the clergy. Meanwhile, the situation in Fatehabad district has become further complicated following the permission sought by Dera Sacha Sauda to hold a "Naam Charcha" in Ratia on July 11, when the Sikh convention is scheduled. The administration has not yet accorded permission either to the organisers of the Sikh convention or to the dera to hold their respective congregations in Ratia on July 11. The Haryana government is believed to have informally told the Punjab government to persuade the organisers of the Sikh convention to hold it in Punjab. Haryana has sought 10 companies of
para-military forces from the Centre to maintain peace in the areas dominated by Sikhs and dera followers. |
