CFL use makes power surplus in village
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, April 5
Haryana has become the first state in the country to convert one of its villages entirely into an area using compact fluorescent lamps, popularly referred to as CFL.

Binaula village in Gurgaon district with just 98 houses earned this distinction after villagers gave back all electric bulbs in exchange for CFL lighting. The use of CFL is likely to bring down the power consumption by half.

A southern Haryana power distribution corporation spokesperson said that villages had exchanged around 700 bulbs for CFLs. This, he said, would bring down the electricity load of the two transformers in the village from 120 amperes to 75 amperes in one and 98 amperes to 42 amperes in the other.

In fact, the transformers that had an overload would now have surplus capacity to provide connections to others.

The power distribution company is now looking at repeating the experiment in other villages of the state.
According to studies conducted by power distribution corporations, if each of the 1.8 million electricity consumers replaces even a single light bulb with a CFL lamp, the state will save 300 MW annually.
