Cattle smuggling: VHP wants action against admin
Tribune News Service

Hisar, March 27
The cow-protection cell of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has demanded the registration of a case against the police and administrative officials who had allegedly helped cattle smugglers in taking away bulls in trucks from Barwala township in the district.

It may be mentioned here that the police had confiscated 33 trucks which were taking more than 400 bulls, buffaloes and calves allegedly to slaughterhouses in Uttar Pradesh. A cattle fair was in progress at Barwala, from which the animals had been taken.

Talking to The Tribune here today, the general secretary of VHP's Haryana chapter,Vijay Sharma, asserted that the smuggling of cattle could not have been possible without the connivance of the "mela", administration and police officials.

"Of the nearly 425 bulls, only 140 were found to be fit for agriculture. The animals were so badly loaded in the trucks that eight of them were found dead by the police," Sharma maintained, adding that all this clearly indicated that the officials concerned were hand in glove with the cattle smugglers.

He pointed out that the episode also raised serious questions over the validity of the medical tests, on the basis of which the sale of such old and sick bulls was allowed.

The state VHP general secretary demanded police action against the officials involved in the crime, failing which a mass agitation would be launched. He said the involvement and patronisation of certain influential political leaders of Haryana as well as Uttar Pradesh in the matter could also not be ruled out.

Meanwhile, the district units of the VHP and the Bajrang Dal have submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister through the district administration. In the memorandum, they have demanded registration of a police case, arrest and strict action against the officials found involved in the case.

In the first campaign, children in the age group of 0-15 in Karnal and Kurukshetra districts will be vaccinated, confirmed the Director-General, Health Services (DGHS) Dr N. K. Sharma.

The state health department, with assistance from the Centre, has planned a massive immunisation drive from April 15. Only one-injection gives lifetime immunity against the disease, said the DGHS.

As many as 195 persons died and 293 cases of Japanese fever were reported from Haryana only from 2001 to 2005, according to central government data.
