Bhagat Singh remembered
by one and all
Khatkar Kalan, March 23 Young boys donning saffron or white turbans in Bhagat Singh’s style and carrying his huge portraits to the function was a common sight today. Many youth organisations from Jalandhar, Khanna and other neighbouring rural areas turned up at the function in trolleys and tractors holding placards to spread the message of the legend. The girls dressed in white suits covered their heads with saffron dupattas. Many school going children also dressed in similar fashion could be seen at the function. Some groups also came marching to the memorial raising slogans, ‘Inqalab Zindabad’, trying to arouse the spirit of patriotism. They then all laid garlands at the memorial. Contrast to these scenes, political parties used this day for their own publicity. From the Jalandhar side, various leaders of the Congress including Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Sukhpal Khaira used the platform to discuss the leads with which they had won polls. Further ahead was the pandal of main function where blue and saffron turbaned men outnumbered others where thousand-plus gathering had assembled to listen to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, clad in a navy blue coat pant, rather than his usual white kurta pyjama. He too seemed to have rather used the opportunity to thank Doabites for helping him emerge with an unusual success. Various Akali and BJP leaders including Deputy Speaker Lok Sabha Charanjit Singh Atwal, Finance Minister Manpreet Badal, Local Bodies Minister Manoranjan Kalia, Jails Minister Hira Singh Gabria and MLA Mohan Lal too addressed the gathering. While some asked for sub-division status for Banga, others called for an elevated road across the town. Only a few such as Manpreet Badal actually paid tributes to the martyr by recalling his valour and reciting some couplets. The communists too had set up their own pandals where cultural events, vaar singing and kavishri items were performed by the dhadi groups. One such group performed at the CM function too. |
Police transfers: PPCC delinks with PIL
Jalandhar, March 23 The Punjab and Haryana High Court has already directed the Punjab government to produce record of the recent police transfer on the basis of the PIL filed by four congress MLAs-Jeet Mohinder Singh, Joginder Kumar Jain, Naresh Kumar Kataria and Jasbir Singh Khangura. The congress MLAs have stated that the ongoing move by the Badal government to scrap the state Vigilance Commission has made Chief Minister Badal the incharge of his own prosecution and that the only hurdle in withdrawing the case against him was an independent commission. S.S. Dullo, president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, has said that his party had nothing to do with the PIL and that it was the individual decision of the MLAs to go to the court and file the PIL on the issue. When asked about the replacement of the then Chief Director, Vigilance Bureau Izhar Alam with IGP Sumedh Saini as the Director the Vigilance Bureau, Dullo said that Saini was an ‘honest officer and had fought against menace of terrorism. |
Leaders play politics
Nawanshahr, March 23 The allegations and counter allegations made by the political leaders, with a view to get political mileage over their political rivals, virtually converted the ‘mela’ into a political gimmick. Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Leader of the Opposition in state assembly, addressing the political conference organised by the Congress, said that Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had made his ‘nefarious motives’ clear by scrapping the Vigilance Commission without any discussion in the assembly. “The CM had given top priority to it and even postponed implementation of his pre-poll promise of provide ‘atta’ and ‘dal’ at cheap rates,” she said adding that the CM had inducted almost all his kins into the cabinet. “The SAD-BJP had only fared in the number game as it got more seats in the recent assembly polls but the Congress had got more votes than the SAD-BJP combine, hence it could not be said that the people of the state had given a mandate in favour of SAD-BJP,” said Bhattal warning the Chief Minister against his ‘vindictive stance’ against the Congress workers in the state. The PPCC president, Shamsher Singh Dullo, said that the Congress would act as a responsible opposition and would not let the ruling SAD-BJP to ignore the interests of the common people. |
