Coop Dept to don farmer-friendly look Rajpura, March 17 As a first step, the government has decided to come out with a comprehensive cooperative policy to make farming a profitable occupation, the minister said while talking to reporters here today. Besides, a state-level advisory committee, which would have two representatives from each district, was also being constituted to suggest ways and means for improvement in the functioning of the department, the SAD general secretary asserted. Reiterating the commitment of the SAD-BJP government to provide corruption-free and transparent government, Capt Kanwaljit Singh said the farmers would get loans from the cooperative banks within 15 days. He asked the farmers to approach him or top functionaries of the Cooperative Department in case they were harassed by banks or officials for the sanction of loans. Answering a question, the Akali stalwart demanded an economic package for the Punjab farmers on the pattern of Maharashtra farmers. An integrated project for the production and distribution of vegetables was being initiated for the benefit of the small farmers, the minister said, adding that export of vegetables was high on the agenda of the government. Detailing steps to streamline the working of the department, he said the vacant posts in the department would be filled soon after a formal approval from the Cabinet. Earlier, Capt Kanwaljit Singh was felicitated at a function at Aluna village, near here. Prominent among those present were Hamir Singh Ghagga, Nirmail Singh Jaula Kalan, Sukhdev Changera, Jaswant Singh Aluna, Labh Singh Bhappal and Sukhpal Singh. |
Tribune lensman manhandled Jalandhar, March 17 A security man in plain clothes pushed the cameraman, Pawan Sharma, and snatched his camera. The camera was returned to him by the university authorities after half an hour, that too after erasing all the pictures he had taken. The incident reportedly occurred when Pawan Sharma was taking pictures of the students who were arguing with dean Rashmi Mittal over the introduction of new eligibility criteria for appearing in the term examination. The rule states that the students should have at least 75 per cent attendance of delivered classes in all theory and practical subjects, with minimum of 65 per cent attendance in an individual subject. As the news pertaining to the incident spread, media fraternity from the city reached the campus and expressed solidarity over the issue. Aman Mittal, PRO, tried to pacify the media but everyone refused to budge over the issue protesting against the high-handedness of the staff at the behest of the authorities. The mediapersons then gathered at Punjab Press Club to decide the future course of action where owners, Ramesh Mittal and Aman Mittal, turned up and apologised. They assured that no incident of the sort would occur in future and mediapersons would be allowed free entry at any time. An assurance of written apology by Rashmi Mittal to the Tribune lensman and Punjab Press Club members was also given. Meanwhile, the protesting students said they wanted the new rule to be withdrawn. They said the authorities were too strict with imposing fines and ordering suspension of students over trifle issues. They alleged that the building had been under construction for the past many years which was a disturbing factor for them. They added that the microbiology laboratory which was supposed to be clean leaked quite often. They further added that the library had just been constructed and had few books. Chancellor Ashok Mittal, earlier, refuted all allegations. He said the camera had not been snatched by the security but by a student whom he had decided to suspend. When Aman Mittal was asked to present the same person in front of the media gathered at the campus, he could not do that. |
Migrants resent police move on registration Jalandhar, March 17 Talking to The Tribune, Lalji Bhardwaj, general secretary, Hind Mazdoor Kisan Panchayat, said the migrants were not criminals and the police should not launch the campaign of registering them. At the same time, he said criminals existed in each and every society so did among Purvanchalis but it did not mean that all Purvanchalis were criminals. To a query, he said if the police had made its mind final to launch the campaign, it should not call migrant labourers to the police stations for registering them in order to avoid their undue harassment. Bhardwaj said the police should send its men to factories and other places of migrants to register them. According to rough estimates, nearly four lakh Purvanchalis are living in different pockets of the city. Sixty per cent of them are from Bihar, whereas forty per cent from Uttar Pradesh. They have considerable population in three Assembly constituencies - North, Central and South - of Jalandhar. So much so, several areas, including localities around Kali Mata Mandir on the Sodal road in Jalandhar North, around Basti Bawa Khel in Jalandhar Central and around Basti Danishmanda and Model House, are known as mini-Purvanchals (UPs and Bihars). Menawhile, DIG (Jalandhar range) N.P. Singh said on Thursday that the police would start campaign to register migrant labourers in Jalandhar, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala and Nawanshahr districts. This would be done in an attempt to check the crime committed by a section of migrant labourers, he said, adding the campaing had earlier been started in Ludhiana but it would started in the Doaba region in an effective way. The general secretary of the Hind Mazdoor Kisan Panchayat demanded that the state government should make arrangements to open primary schools, dispensaries and public toilet in those areas where Purvanchalis are living in a large number. |
