Virbhadra: BJP caused Rs 80,000-cr loss
Tribune News Service

Shimla, March 17
Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh said today it was due to the negligence of the BJP in ensuring equity participation in the Kol and Parbati power projects that Himachal would suffer a loss of Rs 80,000 crore on a long-term basis.

In his reply to the Budget debat "A charge sheet should be brought forward against the BJP for causing such a huge monetary loss to the state which requires every penny for development," he remarked.

He defended his government on the issue of allotment of power projects to Himachalis. Quoting figures he said his government had given projects to 48 Himachalis while during the five-year BJP regime out of 160 allotted projects only 28 were given to people from the state.

"Contrary to BJP allegations of poor fiscal management, we have raised loans of only Rs 921 crore in 2005-06 and Rs 779 crore this year compared to their track record of raising more than Rs 2,000 crore loans per year in their first and last years of governance," he said.

When the BJP came to power in 1998, the total outstanding borrowings were Rs 4421.96 crore, which touched Rs 12,393.10 crore at the end of their five-year rule.
Amidst repeated interruptions from opposition members he also countered allegations of regionalism, saying that the allocation under IPH head for the south zone appeared more as a lump-sum provision of Rs 127 crore had been made. This, he added, had been done for certain schemes that were still under formulation and the same would be done in the central and north zones later.

On the issue of price rise he assured that if need be the allocation of Rs 100 crore for providing subsidy on ration would be increased. "By reducing VAT on food items, the relief will not percolate to the consumer as the traders will take all the benefit," he said.

In order to curb the menace of stray cattle, three 'go sadans' would be opened and a pilot monkey sterilisation project was being run, which would be extended in other parts of the state.

Mandi, March 17
The State Milk Producers Federation (Milkfed) has decided to effect a hike of Rs 2 per litre in the procurement rate of standard milk. The decision would benefit over 25,000 farmers. The hike effected after a gap of over eight years would come into force from April 1.

‘BSNL being unfair’
Our Correspondent

Nalagarh, March 17
The five private agencies, which have been given contracts by a leading private sector cellular company to lay optical fibre cable, have accused the BSNL of creating hurdles in their work.

Addressing a press conference here today, Tele Plex Construction Company, Shubham Enterprises, Chandrika Construction Company, Kamal Engineers and Abid Hussain Shah have accused the BSNL of penalising them Rs 20 lakh to cause damage to already laid cable of the BSNL.

The BSNL action is illogical as it had laid the cable without following the norms, the agencies claimed.
