Jerks of quake rumour
Jalandhar, March 21 The rumours started shaking residents in Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Nawanshahar and Jalandhar districts from 2 a.m.Callers said that a quake was about to hit them in minutes. Their advice was to move out of the house now. The epicenter of the deluge of rumours , however, remained unknown. Like others, this correspondent, too, woke up to a call by a friend from Bathinda at 2.30 a.m. “A quake is to hit Punjab shortly. So, move out. The entire town is out,” was the message. Acquaintances in Jalandhar city had also got similar messages from Hoshiapur, Phagwara, Nawanshahr, Adampur and Ludhiana. People turned on TV sets for quake update, but, there was none. “We are awake and my grandma is telling us stories about the quake that hit Quetta in Pakistan in 1905. She has told us to stay awake and not to go near any building,” said Manbir of Model Town. Residents here kept themselves busy talking about the devastation caused by the 2000 quake that hit Bhuj in Gujarat.Old localities of Jalandhar like Shalimar Bag, Sadar Bazaar, Rainik Bazaar and Bastis were hit as people had to cover a long distance to move away from built areas. In parks and stadia residents preferred to walk or a jog. “We have decided to refresh ourselves with excercises ,” said Manohar Bharaj and Rakesh Suri, two producers of Jalandhar Doordarshan Kendra. Response to city’s panic from the residence of the Deputy Commissioner at around 4.30 a.m was that the administration had no information about the advent of tremors. Anil Jerath adds from Phagwara: Around 4 a.m., this correspondent here started getting frantic calls from locals and people from Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur and Nawanshahr. Making calls from open spaces, they wanted to know the truth. “Rush outside... Immediately...It is a quake..... hurry up”, were the instructions from the first caller. Most callers attributed the news to a private TV channel. It had cautioned people to rush to safe places as tremors were expected between 4 a.m and 5 a.m. The predicted hour passed off peacefully. The channel made another announcement saying that the ‘earthquake time’ was around 5.30 a.m. This was followed by announcements on the public address systems of various religious places in the city and surrounding villages. Some of the families even started shifting their valuables to safer places. |

Bhagat Singh’s memorial may get a facelift
Nawanshahr, March 21 The district administration has already sent a proposal to the Department of Freedom Fighters, Government of India, outlining the details of a scientific design that needs to be worked out to convert it into a full-fledged museum. Giving details of the plan, Deputy Commissioner Krishan Kumar said that the existing hall would be dismantled and a new building for the museum would be constructed a little behind, leaving more open space in the front. He said that this space would be landscaped and the rest would a parking lot. A fast -food joint is already underway on the backside of the bhavan. Commending the efforts of the administration, nephew of the legend, Dr Jagmohan Singh, said that he had also mooted a proposal for setting up an auditorium within the bhavan or tying up with adarsh schools for holding camps to promote youth activities. Jail notes
Dr Singh added that notes and quotes that the martyr had penned in jail had also been compiled by Ludhiana-based Shahid Bhagat Singh Research Committee and posted on the website,
www.shahidbhagatsingh.org. He recalled that Bhagat Singh, who was a voracious reader, had kept a hunger strike to fight against the jail rules and attain the right to read and right. He added that the original valuable excerpts from this notebook of 404 pages can be seen on the net. Complete texts from original scripts of the revolutionary ,including a letter to Sukhdev, leaflet thrown in the Central Assembly and his statement in the sessions court during the assembly bomb case have also been put on the site. Co-patriots’ account
The site developed almost a year back has been updated to give a comprehensive account of the life of his co-patriots, including Chander Shekhar Azad, Sukhdev, Rajguru, Bhagwati Charan Vohra. Their rare original photographs and family details have also been nicely displayed. An autobiographical note by Bhagat Singh’s uncle and his mentor Ajit Singh, which he proposed to be name as “Buried Alive” has also been recently posted on the same site. The note is a narration of his 40 years of struggle against the British imperialism. Centenary date uncorrected
Dr Singh is happy that the state government has declared the birth centenary of Shaheed-e-Azam as a holiday but he continues to have a grudge. “I fail to understand why they have not corrected the birth anniversary date as September 28 rather than September 27. I have even provided the government valid proofs in this regard. I was able to lay hand on his
janampatri. The government officials who did not believe me had shown it to some pandit who deciphered the date of birth as September 28”, he pointed out. Memorial coin
It is also learnt that the Central government is planning to release a memorial coin to mark the forthcoming centenary celebrations falling in September this year. The DC said that he had been asked to cull some information about Bhagat Singh. Functions
The Punjab CM will address a ceremony to be held at Khatkar Kalan. Dr Singh said that he would be at Delhi on that day where he had been invited for the release of selected writings of the legend. |
