Proprietary rights for tillers near border
Ferozepore, March 23
In a major relief to landless farmers who have been tilling government land along the zero line of the Indo-Pakistan border for the past several decades, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal today announced that the state government would grant proprietary rights to the tillers who have been cultivating the land since ages at a subsidised cost of Rs 15,000 per acre which would be payable in three easy instalments.

MBA-qualified Pak spy held in Ludhiana
Ludhiana, March 23
The police has arrested an MBA degree-holding resident of Bahawalpur in Pakistan on the charge of espionage from Haibowal here. The police claims to have recovered several incriminating documents, sensitive to the country's security, from the youth, besides two local SIM cards. The police has beefed up security around the sensitive places in the region.

Unruly scenes at ‘shaheedi divas’
Amritsar, March 23
Unruly scenes were witnessed at the “shahidi divas” organised by the District Congress Committee here today when some party workers got agitated over the fact that those who had opposed the party candidates in the assembly elections were also attending the function at Congress Bhavan.

A large number of commuters passing through the district remained stranded for hours today as PRTC staffers were demanding prompt action against general secretary of the SAD youth wing Yadwinder Singh Yadi, who was booked for assaulting a PRTC driver a few days ago.

Cancellation of buses to be probed
Pathankot, March 23
Transport Minister Mohan Lal said here today that an inquiry would be conducted into alleged cancellation of buses plying from Sujanpur to Hardwar, Sujanpur to Shimla and Sujanpur to Chandigarh. He said that he did not know about the cancellation of the buses which were started by the previous government from Sujanpur. He said the Akali-BJP government was committed to provide better transport facilities to the people.

Bus overturns, 19 injured
Fatehgarh Sahib, March 23
A PRTC bus on its way from Patiala to Jalandhar overturned this evening near village Kharori on the Patiala-Sirhind road. 19 passengers and driver of the bus were seriously injured and have been rushed to the civil hospital Fatehgarh Sahib. The condition of one person is reported to be serious and has been taken to the PGI. Deputy commissioner Alak Nanda and SSP Nilabh Kishore visited the hospital and assured full help to the injured.

Farmers: Scrap land acquisition policy

At a "shaheedi conference" organised by the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) here today, thousands of farmers, including a large number of women, passed a resolution by raising their hands asking the newly elected SAD-BJP government to scrap the policy of acquiring land of farmers for private companies.

Rajinder Singh of Katra Charat, Khuh Suniara in the walled city, was stabbed to death by some unidentified persons here this morning. His body was found in the Gole Bagh area.
