VAT turns businessmen to CAs

Phagwara, November 23
‘Make hay while VAT shines’, seems to be the mantra for chartered accountants (CAs) as their incomes are set to sore by almost 20 per cent after the VAT regime, thanks to lack of awareness among people.

Chartered accountants have become the most sought after professionals as businessmen face difficulty in understanding the value added tax (VAT) and correct evaluation.

Dinesh Singla, a chartered accountant, says, “People are not clear about the intricacies involved in VAT. They have to rely on professionals like chartered accountants and we are expecting a business growth of 15 per cent and 20 per cent.”

Businessmen falling within the purview of VAT are facing problems related to billing, sales tax number to TIN conversion, VAT returns and VAT audit. Singla says, “For taking Input Tax Credit (ITC), the assessee has to file party-wise purchase details i.e. bills, hitherto conspicuous by its absence in the sales tax regime. Also, people want to avoid hassles included in the TIN and filing VAT returns as the paper wok has increased enormously because of complex formalities.”

Another Jalandhar-based chartered accountant, Vijay Lamba says, “VAT is a self-assessment tax and as people are ignorant about minute details. So, they turn to us. Moreover, nobody wants to be on the wrong side of the pool in the beginning. So they have to take help of the professionals.”

He also adds, “With the introduction of the VAT regime, paperwork has increased, and the veracity of their returns will be checked through random or selected scrutiny.”

Officials reiterate that the fear on the part of consumers and several businessmen is uncalled for. Instead it would help simplify the indirect tax system, reduce tax evasion, bring transparency and enhance tax neutrality.

With new software evaluation of VAT has been simplified manifold, they added.
