LIC to pay Rs 3 lakh to widow
Hoshiarpur, November 19
The District Consumer Forum, Hoshiarpur, directed the Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) of India to Rs 3 lakh to Ms Manjit Kaur, widow of Jatinder Singh of Bhulewal Rathan village, near Garhshankar. They also directed the LIC to pay interest at 9 per cent from the date of filing the complaint and Rs 1,000 for the litigation within a month from the date of receipt of the copy of the judgement.

Cong leaders allege corruption in shop auction

Batala, November 19
A meeting of a group of eight municipal councillors belonging to the Congress was held at M.B. Resorts,here today. In a signed Press note, they alleged use of unfair means in the auction of shops in fron of the main bus stand, here.

The signatories include :Mr. Harinder Singh ;Mr. Tarlochan Chanda ; Mr. Sukhjeet Singh Sukh ; Mr. Joginder Angroola ; Mr. Harinder Singh Kalsi ; Mr. Rashpal Singh Bhola ; Mrs. Rattno DeviRoopal and Mrs. Pinky Pumma.

The shops have been auctioned for Rs.3 to 4lakh each , which could have fetched Rs.15 lakh per shop. The group of councillors alleged that many purchasers were not the original allottees. They demanded a high level enquiry into the matter.

However ,Mr. Subash Sekhri, President, Municipal council, Batala, said that the auction was conducted according to rules.

Minor raped

A minor belonging to village under police station Rangar Nangal was raped by four persons on Friday evening by Jagroop Singh, alias Jacky, Sujan Singh and Raja when the victim was returning home after attending the sewing class.

The four accused raped and l also took away her clothes. The girl approached the nearby house of Mr. Jagir Singh, who informed her parents. A case under Sections 376, 354, 34 of the IPC has been registered at Rangar Nangal police station. One person has been arrested .

New bus route

A new bus Batala to Haridwar was inaugurated here today (Saturday) at 05:00 A.M. The Punjab Roadways, Batala depot’s first bus on the hardwar route was flaged off by Mr. Raghunath Sahay Puri, Transport Minister, Punjab in the presence of Mr. Ashwani Sekhri, MLA Batala and Parliamentary Secretary, Punjab Mr. Balwinder Singh Laadi, Chairman Zilla Parishad, Gurdaspur, Mr. Subhash Sekhri, President Municipal Council, Batala, and Mr. Shakti Khullar and others.

Travel agent arrested

Phagwara, November 19
The Phagwara police nabbed a proclaimed offender wanted for cheating a local resident on the pretext of sending him abroad from the International Rajasansi Airport, Amritsar, on Friday.

The city police station SHO said Gian Singh, a resident of nearby Bhullarai village, had lodged a complaint with the Phagwara police that he had given Rs 65,000 to Kashmir Lal, a travel agent of Nurmahal in March 2004 for sending his son Trilok Singh to Kuwait. Similarly, Nirmal Kaur had also lodged a complaint with the police that Kashmir Lal along with another travel agent Joga Singh, a resident of Shivpuri in Phagwara, took Rs 65,000 for sending her son Palwinder Singh abroad. The said agents had failed to deliver.

The police had already arrested Joga Singh in this connection but Kashmir Lal had been evading arrest.

NRI injured in attack

Around six unidentified persons attacked an NRI with sharp-edged weapons and seriously injured on him at the local Palahi Road area here on Friday.

According to sources, Bobby, an NRI from England, had returned to India a few days ago. The attackers stopped him when he was about to enter a shop on the Palahi Road. They fled the spot after the attack.

Bobby was admitted to the local Civil Hospital from where the doctors referred him to the DMC, Ludhiana, keeping in view his critical condition.

Take tough stand with Pak: Bitta

The All-India Anti-Terrorist Front President, Mr M.S. Bitta, has condemned the recommendations of the Sachar Committee and described the recommendations as a threat to the security of the nation.

Addressing mediapersons here yesterday, Mr Bitta said the government should ignore all these recommendations. He urged the Centre to adopt tough stand against Pakistan, which could not understand the language of humanity.

He said SAD (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann was hand in glove with anti-national elements. Even some officers of state intelligence agencies were involved in anti-national activists. He said he would soon appraise the Union Home Ministry in this regard.

He urged the Chief Election Commissioner to impose ban on the political as well as “anti-national” activities of the SAD (A).

SAD to make corruption poll issue

Former Punjab Chief Minister and Shiromani Akali Dal President Parkash Singh Badalhas said that his party will contest the ensuing Assembly elections on the issues of rising prices of essential commodities and corruption.

He denied reports about differences between The BJP and the SAD on seat sharing. The two parties would bring out separate manifestoes and a joint common minimum programme .

When asked about his demand to deploy para-military forces during the coming elections in the state, Mr Badal urged the Election Commission to make adequate arrangements for free, fair, fearless and transparent elections. When asked whether he had faith in the working of Punjab police, Badal praised it saying it was a disciplined force, but few of its senior officers were working only for CM Captain Amarinder Singh and their confidants had to obey them.  

Earlier, Mr Badal along with Deputy Lok Sabha Speaker Charanjit Singh Atwal and former minister Ch Swarna Ram and Akali leader Jarnail Singh Wahid attended a programme of the Bharatiya Balmiki Dharam Samaj at Balmiki Chowk here.

Mr. Gian Singh Rana, Chairman, Mr. Sucha Singh, Managing Director, Mr. Narinder Sharma, District Manager, spoke about the success of cooperative movement in the district and  achievements of Nawanshahr Cooperative Bank.

Cane crushing begins

The local Doaba Cooperative Sugar Mills started its cane crushing season in a different way on Saturday. The crushing was inaugurated by two employees, who are going to retire shortly – Banwari Lal and Dev Raj.

Mr. Ranjit Singh Jhinger, Mr. Hari Kishan Singh, Directors, Mr. K.A. Gaur, General Manager, Mr. Satnam Singh, Chief Cane Development Officer,were among others present on the occasion.

The cane growers – Pritam Singh, Hazara Singh and Mohinder Singh, the ‘early birds’ in bringing sugarcane for crushing, were also honoured.

Painting competition

The Shaeed Gian Singh Sangha Yadhgari Committee in collaboration with the Democratic Teachers Front and CPI(ML) organized an on- the –spot- painting competition at nearby village Shahabpur, on Saturday, to commemorate the martyrdom day of Gian Singh Sangha, who was gunned down by militants 14 years ago. As many as 200 students belonging to different schools participated. In group A- Kuldip Singh, Mustaq, Sunny, in Group B – Sukhvir, Rajni, Harpreet, in Group C – Bhupinder, Navdeep, Jasdeep and in Group D – Sanjiv, Harpreet, Navdeep, won the first three positions ,respectively.

LIC to pay Rs 3 lakh to widow

Ms Manjit Kaur had filed a complaint under Section 12 of the Consumer Protection Act, 1986, asking the LIC to pay Rs 3 lakh on the death of her husband Jatinder Singh on the basis of the insurance policy purchased from it. The LIC repudiated the claim of the complainant, pleading that Jatinder Singh had concealed facts regarding his health at the time of the policy.

On the complaint of Chief Administrator of PUDA, Jalandhar, the Sadar police has registered a case under Section 36 of the Punjab Apartment and Property Regulation Act, 1995, against Amit Gupta son of Satish Kumar of village Salwara for constructing an unauthorized colony in village Sukhiabad in year 1999-2000.

The Eye Donation Association (EDA), Hoshiarpur, has helped Anjubala, 22,daughter of Mr Tarsem Singh of local Mohalla Ravi Dass Nagar, to get a cornea transplant for her left eye. She had lost the eye following chickenpox attack 19 years ago. A matriculate, she earns by doing domestic chores.

Mr. Bahadur Singh Sunnet, President of the EDA, Hoshiarpur, told The Tribune that the members had got more than 15000 persons to pledge their eyes for donation. Among these are: Mr. Krishan Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, Nawanshahar, Jathedar Joginder Singh Vedanti, Jathedar of Akal Takht, Jathedar Tarlochan Singh of Takht Anandpur Sahib, Pt Hans Raj of Ram Sharnam Ashram Gohana, Mata Kaushalya, Chief of Ram Sharnam Ashram, Hoshiarpur, Mr Ajay Mohan, President of Municipal Council, Hoshiarpur.

The EDA, Hoshiarpur had been affiliated to Eye Bank, PGI Chandigarh, Punerjot Eye Bank, Ludhaina, Eye Bank Association of India, Hyderabad.

He said that the rate of eye donation in Punjab was less than even 1 per cent.

He said that the donated eyes were being saved in the approved Punerjot Eye Bank of Ludhiana.

He further said that the EDA today also got removed the eyes of Ms Leelawati, wife of Late Mr. Hans Raj of local Mohalla Khanpuri Gate. She had pledged to donate her eyes after death.

Sangh function

A mass Smajik Eakta Sammelan was organised in connection with the birth centenary of Mr Madhav Rao Sada Shiv Rao Golwalkar, second Chief Founder of RSS at Roshan Ground here today. Thousands of workers of the Sangh Parivar participated in the function which was presided over by Mahant Ram Parkash Dass of Datarpur.

Addressing the gathering on this occasion, Principal Davinder Gupta, Mr Amrit Sagar, Organiser of RSS for Hoshiarpur and Gurdaspur units, Mahant Ravinder Dass of Dera Baba Charan Shah, Bahadurpur, Swami Saravjot of Dera Kantian, Mahant Suraj Parkash, Swami Satya Varat Nand of Mandiali of village Bhungarni and Mahant Ram Parkash Dass exhorted people to form a hierarchical society.

Jethmalani tactics decried

Former CBI chief Joginder Singh has said that the tactics being used by Ram Jethmalani in the Supreme Court in the Jessica Lall murder case are not in the interest of the Indian judicial system.

There were around 3.32 lakh cases pending in courts across the country and shortage of judges was leading to non clearance of cases.

To streamline the working of judiciary, new judges should be appointed urgently or else the dictum of justice delayed is justice denied will come true. over 58000 cases of heinous crime were pending in the courts.

Asum of Rs.1.15 lakh crores were outstanding against individuals and institutions as debt.

Earlier, Mr.Joginder Singh addressed the students of 36th annual convention of Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad .

Mr.S.Murghai, Vice Chancellor of Gurukul Kangri University, and Mr.Sunil Ambedkar, General secretary,ABVP also spoke on the occasion.

Lions get land to build old age home

In its bid to make the aged safe and secure, the Jalandhar Improvement Trust has given land worth Rs. 6 crore to the Lions Club for setting up an old age home.

The proposed Old Age Home will have a special wing for parents of NRIs or aged NRIs, who, come to Punjab for a period of two-three months every year to supervise their properties.

Punjab Local Bodies Minister Chaudhary Jagjit Singh handed over a letter regarding the 33 -year lease to Mr. A.Venu Parsad, Deputy Commissioner-cum-chairman of the Governing Council of the proposed Old Age Home and Dr. P.J.S. Aneja, the President of the club at a function in the Lions Club premises here today.

A block for poor aged has also been envisaged, said Mr. Tejinder Singh Bittu,the Chairman of the Jalandhar Improvement Trust.

The District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum asked has asked the Northern Railway to provide compensation to a couple for have been harassed by the poor service of the Railways . In its eight -page judgement pronounced recently, the president of the forum ,Mr. AK Sharma and its member Ms. Sushma Handoo asked the Railways to pay Mr. Ashok Sharma of 398, Urban Estate, Phagwara in Kapurthala district Rs. 3500 as compensation and Rs. 500 as costs of litigation within one month from the date of receipt of the copy of the judgement.

In his complaint filed against Mr. Bhalinder Singh ,TT Northern Railway ,and Senior Divisional Manager Ambala Cantt under Section 12 of the Consumer Protection Act on February 27 ,this year, Mr. Ashok Sharma had claimed compensation for mental tension and physical harassment on account of deficiency in the service.

Mr. Sharma stated in his complaint that he and his wife had got two berths 41 and 42 reserved in super train number 2459 on February 13 from New Delhi to Phagwara. The train was late for about two and half hours as per an announcement made at New Delhi railway station.

Therefore, he approached one TT on duty at the station and showed him the tickets. He enquired from him about the alternative. The TT informed him that deluxe train number 2925 halted at platform number 4 and he could board this train and further advised him to sit in the general coach.He went by his advise. The complainant alleged that another TT, Bhalinder Singh, entered the coach and starting collecting Rs. 50 as bribe from other passengers who were having tickets of super train.

When he demanded Rs. 50 from him and his wife, the complainant refused to oblige. He not only behaved with him rudely but also threatened him with dire consequences, he added.

Thereafter the train stopped at Ambala Cantt, the TT called the Railway Police and pushed him and his wife from the train. The TT in connivance with the police took them to police station. They were at the police station for three hours.

Mr. C.H. Ventatachalam, a leader of the bank employees, said any effort towards privatization of nationalized banks would be resisted tooth and nail. He also criticized the idea of merger of banks.

Plays on drug abuse

Nukkad Nataks were organised in different parts of the city today by the Sat Sewa Sanchar and Trinity communications to create awareness among people about growing drug abuse and proliferation of AIDS.

The plays were initiated on ocassion of the National Press Day on November 16.

Speaking on the ocassion, Mr. George. G.P., the head of the Sat Sewa Sanchar, said drug abuse was casting an adverse affect on the growth of the society. Same was the case with AIDS, which, was a by-product of drug abuse in most of cases.
