Badal reluctant to talk about Barnala
Nurmahal, August 13 “Nothing concrete has come out as yet. Police is investigating the case. How can I say anything at this stage, before the completion of the investigation?” Mr Badal asked. When asked about the allegations of rape levelled against the MLA from Dhuri and the son of Tamil Nadu Governor Surjit singh Barnala, Mr Badal said investigations were on in the case and he could not say anything. A few months away from the Punjab Assembly polls, the political circles see the incident as a blow to the SAD (B). Meanwhile, lashing out at the Captain Amarinder Singh-led state government, Mr Badal alleged that it had “failed” on all fronts and was now busy “looting” the people. “Do you see any development around you? It’s all in the papers. No project has come out of the papers so far. They are befooling you,” he alleged. Mr Badal alleged that the chief objective of the Congress was not development, but wrest power in every possible manner. The SAD (B) chief was accompanied by senior Akali leaders, including Kuldip Singh Wadala and Ajit Singh Kohar. The leaders today participated in five rallies in Mao Sahib (Phillaur), Jandiala, Mehatpur and Nurmahal. |

‘Humiliated’ mason attempts self-immolation
Jalandhar, August 13 He is now admitted in the Civil Hospital in a serious condition with over 90 per cent burns. In his statement, Jasbir alleged that he had borrowed a meagre amount of Rs 200 from another mason Madan Lal sometime back but had returned the money thereafter. Despite this, he alleged, Madan Lal kept teasing and humiliating him over the money he (Jasbir) had borrowed. He claimed that he had been bearing the humiliation with patience so far. But Madan, he alleged, surpassed all limits of decency today after he not only teased him but also snatched his bicycle. The victim claimed that this incident forced him to take the extreme step. “I could not bear the insults anymore. It was enough for me,” Jasbir said in a feeble voice. He said he rushed home and tried to immolate himself at about 10 am. Dev Raj, Jasbir’s brother, came to his rescue and took him to the Adampur Civil Hospital, from where he was referred to the Jalandhar Civil Hospital. A case under Sections 306 and 511 of the IPC has been registered against Madan Lal at the Adampur Doaba police station. No arrest has been made yet. |
245 mega projects worth Rs 95,000 crore cleared
Jalandhar, August 13 He said the projects would involve an investment of nearly Rs 95,000 crore, but the total investment flow in Punjab in the current financial year was likely to cross the mark of Rs one lakh crore. He said all these projects were likely to generate gainful employment for more than 16 lakh youths in the state. The minister said he had already instructed industrial units to have their own water treatment plants so that natural water sources, such as rivers, could be saved from pollution. “Residents of six districts of Malwa are falling prey to diseases like cancer due to contaminated ground water,” Mr Henry said. |
