3 cops suspended: ASI Bahal Singh, Head Constable Daljit Singh and Constable Jaspal Singh, have been suspended and booked under Sections 223, 224 of the IPC for their alleged negligence, due to which a smuggler, Sewa Singh, escaped from police custody.
Kin demand challan: Mr Parveen Sharma, brother of Yogesh Sharma who committed suicide on June 3, 2004, alleged on Saturday that the police had not arrested or filed challan against one of the three accused, a constable, Jarnail Singh, despite raids.

TV channel staff booked: Vijay Sharma, Ranjeet Azad and Jaiswal working with a TV channel have been arrested on charge of allegedly blackmailing the authorities of a government school in Shalla, the SSP, Mr PRS Umaranangal, said on Friday. The accused were absconding, he added.

Travel agent booked: The police has registered a case under Section 420 of the IPC against a fake travel agent, Gurbachan Lal, a resident of Subhash Nagar in Jalandhar, for allegedly taking Rs 2.25 lakh from Balwant Singh of Mukerian, for sending his son to Italy.

I-Day preparations: Deputy Commissioner A. Venu Parsad on Sunday appealed to the residents of Jalandhar to reach the local Guru Gobind Singh Stadium, the venue for the Independence Day function, by 8.30 am on August 15 and participate in the celebrations. He said Punjab Minister for Cooperation Amarjit Singh Samra would be the chief guest.
Saplings planted: In a bid to promote farming of medicinal plants, followers of Baba Harnam Singh Domeliwale planted nearly 50 saplings of quality ‘Amla’ tree around Dera Baba Harbansgarh at Kartarpur on Sunday. More than 100 medicinal plants would be planted in and around the dera during the current year.

Fund for poor patients: To help the poor and needy patients, a ‘Dr Gurmail Singh Memorial Endowment Fund’ will be set up in memory of the former Principal, Government Medical College, Amritsar, and senior vice-president of Guru Nanak Mission Medical and Educational Trust, Dhahan Kaleran by the trust. This was announced at a shradhanjali samaroh organised by the trust on Saturday.

Newspaper copies burnt: Members of a particular community led by Mr Ashwani Kumar Kuku burnt copies of a newspaper published from Mohali, in protest against the publication of an article on rakhi. A representative of the newspaper, at a meeting called by the SSP, assured that the paper would be careful about public sentiments in future.
