Peace in Haryana Cong fragile
Chandigarh, June 6 Mr Bishnoi, who had been criticising the Hooda government of and on in the past, had been silent for the past several weeks. The general impression among the party cadre was that the high command had told him as well as the Hooda faction not to indulge in activities harmful to the party. While Mr Bishnoi had been silent, the Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, had made a major change in the excise policy of the state to help a close relative of Mr Bishnoi. Though it was decided earlier that no quota would be fixed for the six distilleries in the state, Mr Hooda later allowed the Excise Department to fix 15 per cent quota for each distillery. Mr Bishnoi's relative owns a distillery. Trade sources say, in the absence of a fixed quota, there are not many takers for its products. The fixation of quota has definitely helped it, though Mr Hooda took the plea that the government could not allow the distilleries in the state to suffer. Unlike in the past when the Hooda faction chose to ignore Mr Bishnoi's allegations, today it promptly criticised the dissident MP. The Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda, had always been maintaining that since the Congress firmly believed in democratic norms, its members had a right to freedom of expression. Never a senior member of the faction spoke against Mr Bishnoi, who had been taking shots at the functioning of the Hooda government. The Haryana Congress Working President, Dr Ram Prakash, too, would not say anything beyond giving an advice to Mr Bishnoi that he should raise such issues either on the party platform or with the Chief Minister. Dr Ram Prakash is a close associate of Mr Hooda. It was left by the Hooda faction to its junior members to attack Mr Bishnoi. However, today a senior member of the Hooda Cabinet openly criticised Mr Bishnoi for indulging in anti-party activities. The Irrigation Minister, Capt Ajay Singh Yadav, said the performance of Mr Bishnoi in the Lok Sabha had left much to be desired. He had never raised any issue concerning the state and often avoided attending the Lok Sabha sessions. Capt Yadav said Mr Bishnoi should learn from his colleague, Mr Deepender Singh Hooda, MP from Rohtak, who had taken care of Haryana's interests on every occasion and had been able to bring several schemes from the Centre for the state. Capt Yadav said the ministers in the Hooda government had been nice to Mr Bishnoi in honouring his recommendations. He said speaking in the public against the government of one's own party was highly regrettable. The Youth Congress leaders alleged that Mr Bishnoi seemed to be hand in glove with the INLD. Urging him to act wisely in future, they said, Mr Bishnoi should follow the high ideals of the Congress in the larger interest of the development of the state. |
