In-laws set woman afire
Chandigarh, June 6
A 24-year-old woman was allegedly set afire by her minor brother and sister-in-laws after pouring kerosene oil on her at her Sector 7 residence this morning. She was sustained 80 per cent burn injuries, said the police.

MC identifies monsoon trouble spots
Chandigarh, June 6
Chandigarh Municipal Corporation has completed the survey to mark the expected trouble spots for the residents during the forthcoming monsoon. Related emergency services, particularly fire tenders and other machinery to drain out the water, will be kept on the waiting.

Petrol stations run dry
Chandigarh, June 6
Even as the city is reeling under the impact of the steep rise in fuel prices, over a dozen petrol stations in the tri-city ran dry in the morning. Sources say that many oil companies did not send their tankers to the filling stations last night, so that these could be sold at the revised rates.

BJP’s dharna against petrol price hike

Police grills wife of Dy Mayor 
Chandigarh, June 6
Harneet Singh, wife of Deputy Mayor H.S. Lucky, and one of the suspects in the theft case of expensive clothes from a showroom in Sector 17 in April, this year, today joined investigation following the direction of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Sources in the Crime Branch of the Chandigarh Police said Harneet Singh along with her husband and counsel came to the Crime Branch to join the investigation at around 4 pm. The court has directed her to join investigations till June 8.

Mohali power supply better, claims PSEB
Mohali, June 6
All villages falling under the Mohali circle have been provided with power supply on the urban pattern. Mr Surinder Pal, Deputy Chief Engineer, said 313 villages had been provided power supply as was being done in urban areas. He said earlier villages were getting power supply only for a few hours when the three phase power supply was released for tubewells. As such the residents of all these villages were facing problems. Now the Punjab State Electricity Board (PSEB) had separated the tubewell supply from that of the residential area.

Coming, Army’s new combat fatigues

The Indian Army is all poised to don new colours. Rattled by the growing misuse of its combat fatigues by terrorists, the Army has ordered the production of new fatigues which would be available, by November, only at the ordnance factories and not sold over-the-counter.

As a step to celebrate World Environment Day, kids of Jack & Jill Hilltop Club planted numerous saplings in Jayanti Majri village, 6 km from the PGI, yesterday. A workshop in this connection for kids started on May 22 and ended on the eve of World Environment Day. The rustic environment was relished by the children, who learnt how to rough it out along with adventure and fun.

Govt bows to contractors’ demands

The Haryana Government has accepted certain demands of the Hot Mix Plant Contractors Association for which the contractors had been boycotting tenders till the end of this month.

Bid to steal overhead cable 
Chandigarh, June 6
An attempt to steal the overhead electricity cable led to the power disruption on the Chandigarh-Ambala section on June 3. The evening New Delhi-Chandigarh Shatabdi Express was stranded for about an hour at Zirakpur.

Two women pickpockets held
Mohali, June 6
Two migrant women labourers were caught and were handed over to the police after they allegedly picked the pocket of a local resident today. According to reports, Gurvinder Singh, who had withdrawn Rs 15,000 from a bank in Phase III B 2, stopped at a chhabeel at Gurdwara Sacha Dhan Sahib to have sweetened water.

Wallet stolen at GMCH-32
Chandigarh, June 6
Mr Chandan Suri, Marketing Executive, The Tribune, lodged a complaint with the police that his wallet was stolen at Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, here this afternoon. The wallet containing his driving licence, registration certificate of his motor cycle, ATM card, identity card and some other important documents, was stolen while he was in an elevator in the hospital.

HOA officials booked
Panchkula, June 6
The district police has booked a director and a cashier of the Haryana Olympic Association (HOA) in a case of misappropriation of funds and cheating. The two, H.S. Bhadu and Bhupinder Singh, director and cashier of the association, respectively, have been booked under Sections 406 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code.

Students throng govt colleges for admission forms 
Chandigarh, June 6
Students seeking admission to four government colleges in the city made a beeline for the colleges after the sale of admission forms opened today. The Education Department of Chandigarh Administration will conduct joint admission to Government College, Sector 11, Government College for Girls, Sector 11, Government College for Girls, Sector 42 and Government College, Sector 46, all affiliated with Panjab University.

UT police restrained from arresting Harneet
Chandigarh, June 6
A vacation bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court today restrained Chandigarh police from arresting Ms Harneet Singh, wife of Deputy Mayor, H.S. Lucky, till June 8. However, the Bench directed her to join investigations at 4 pm today. Thereafter the bail plea was adjourned.
