Suraj Bhan irked over poor development of Malli Parade area
Ambala, May 28 Mr Suraj Bhan said that residents of Malli Parade were being constantly asked to move out from the area by the Army authorities even though they have been residing there for the past 150 years. “A few months ago, I had issued summons to the Defence Secretary in this regard. The Defence Secretary had committed in writing that the matter will be looked into,” he said. He said till date there had been no further development with regard to the Malli Parade area. “If a meeting is not called at Ambala over this issue soon, I am again going to issue a reminder to the Defence Secretary,” he said. Mr Suraj Bhan said that in 1857, the British had bought 300 families from different parts of Uttar Pradesh, including Etah, Mainpuri, Hardoi, Unnao and Kanpur. “They were settled in an area of 367 acres. In the past 150 years, 15,000 families have come here. On paper, the land is owned by Rajputs of Babyal village and the Army is paying a sum of 50 paisa per acre per year for the land,” he said. Since Independence, during each election, the residents of Malli Parade are victims of vote politics. “In 1967, I became MP for the first time and I took up the issue of Malli Parade residents. Even as Deputy Speaker as well as Uttar Pradesh Governor, I raised their issue,” he said. Mr Suraj Bhan recalled that once Jagjivan Ram specially came to Ambala in late 60s to personally take stock of the situation in the Malli Parade area. “I held meeting with the director of Army land at Himachal Pradesh Raj Bhavan during my governorship. Yet, there was no fruitful result,” he said. He said that after taking over as Chairman of the National Commission for Scheduled Caste, he was informed that there are 6000 families, which are SC, while the rest are Backward castes. “Then I wrote a letter to Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee last year, pointing out that the residents of Malli Parade are paying house tax and they have power connection.” He stated thereafter, he wrote a letter to the Defence Secretary but there was no response. “When a reminder also did not elicit any response, I issued summon for the Defence Secretary. The Defence Secretary said the matter would be discussed with the Haryana Government,” he said. Mr Suraj Bhan said the residents of Malli Parade should be allowed to continue to live there. |
