MC chief loses no-trust vote

The Municipal Council President, Mr Tarun Bhandari, today lost the no-confidence motion, after the Punjab and Haryana High Court failed to grant a stay on a petition filed by him. The court adjourned the hearing to February 17.

At least 162 acres are being acquired in Dhanas village to rehabilitate slum dwellers. The Chandigarh Administration has directed the land Acquisition Collector to take possession of the land, indicating that the Chandigarh Administration has not made up its mind to hand over the prime land in UT villages to the Municipal Corporation.

Defamation suit against Lucky

A physically challenged person, Mr Ajay Kumar Gupta, has dragged the Deputy Mayor, Mr H.S. Lucky, along with three other persons to the court for defaming him in the eye of public by allegedly getting a false case of trespass registered against him.

Dalai Lama’s envoys in China for talks

A delegation, comprising senior aids of the Tibetan spiritual leader, Dalai Lama, were sent to China for the fifth round of talks with the Chinese leadership for chalking out the future of the Tibetan people and autonomy for the region.

No new taxes in MC Budget
Chandigarh, February 15 The budget proposed by the Municipal Corporation, Chandigarh, today for the next financial year envisages no additional levies or increase in the rates of existing levies on the general public. No new taxes have been proposed in the budget. A budget estimate of Rs 168.94 crore for the financial year 2006-07 was approved by the Finance & Contract Committee of MCC at its meeting.

Experts dwell on caste discrimination in India

“Caste discrimination has been highest among agriculturally prosperous societies. And Punjab and Haryana’s case has been no different. Caste oppression reinforced by the economic exploitation has expanded in proportion to the economic success in this green revolution belt,” stated Mr Atma Ram, a social activist and expert on the Dalit Question delivering a lecture at Panjab University here today.

New housing schemes in Chandigarh are the top priority of the Chandigarh Administration in the proposed Budget for the next financial year (2006-2007). A sum of 294.75 crore has been earmarked under the non-Plan head and Rs 94.39 crore under the Plan head for the purpose.

Inspector held for graft

The widespread corruption in the Haryana Cooperative Societies Department, which is busy these days in registering group housing societies following a HUDA scheme, came in the open today when an Inspector of the department posted in Panchkula was arrested allegedly for taking bribe for registering a society.

ASI held for demanding bribe
Panchkula, February 15
ASI Ishwar Singh, posted in Sector 5 police station, was arrested by a Vigilance Bureau team led by DSP Hemant Kalson here today for demanding bribe. Sources said Avinash Kumar was asked to pay a bribe of Rs 50,000 to drop charges of assault against him in a case.

A PIL has been filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking directions to governments of Punjab and Haryana as well as the Chandigarh Administration to nab all the proclaimed offenders (POs) as well as criminals who have jumped bail.

Orthopaedic surgeons’ meet
Chandigarh, February 15
The Chandigarh Spine Society comprising orthopaedic surgeons and neuro surgeons with special interest in spinal surgery is organising the 19th annual conference of the Association of Spine Surgeons of India (ASSICON-2006) from February 17 to 19. This was stated by Prof Raj Bhadaur, president, Chandigarh Spine Society, who is also the organising chairman of the conference, in a press note today. The Haryana Governor, Dr A. R. Kidwai, will inaugurate the conference.

PGI doctor honoured

Dr Chetana Vaishnavi, Additional Professor for Microbiology in the Department of Gastroenterology, PGI, has been awarded the second prize in a poster session at the annual conference of the Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India held in New Delhi from February 10-12, 2006. The award is for her work on “Study of Salmonella in Bile and Sera of Patients with Biliary Diseases”, which was funded by the Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi.

Mumbai thrashed East Zone in the Nabotsav sports meet cricket final held at Panjab University today. Vikas Sathe was adjudged man of the match as well as man of the series. South Zone finished third.
