Admn gears up for Indo-Pak hockey matches
To allow free entry to spectators
Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, February 15
After conducting the one-month long Premier Hockey League successfully last month, the Chandigarh Administration is again ready to hold two matches of the first leg of the high-profile Indo-Pak hockey series on February 17 and 18 at Hockey Stadium, Sector 42, here.

The Director, Sports Department, Mr I.S. Sandhu, presided over the meeting of the officials held yesterday to finalise the arrangements regarding security, traffic, entry passes, transportation of the players and the officials and the seating plan for the prestigious event.

“During the Indo-Pak match held here last year, the spectators faced lot of problems like traffic jams, parking and entry as well. But this time we are making elaborate arrangements to smoothen the affair”, said Mr J.P.S Sidhu, Joint Director, Sports Department.

Like last year’s match, this time too, the administration has decided on free entry for the spectators. For the purpose three blocks of the stadium will be opened to them. But the entry in the main block will be allowed with invitation cards only.

“The city people are great hockey lovers and have showed their affection for the game many times by coming in large number to witness matches time to time. To felicitate these enthusiasts as well as to promote the game, we have decided to allow free entry in the general blocks”, said Mr Sidhu.

Elaborating about the preparations, he said, “Expecting great rush on the days, we are making separate arrangements for the parking of two-wheelers and four-wheelers. To avoid traffic jams in front of the main gate of the stadium, only permitted vehicles will be allowed to move there”.

It is to be recalled that the police had to resort lathicharge last year to control the rush. This time appropriate arrangements will be made to avoid such situation, assured the officials.

The Pakistani team will come here tomorrow whereas the India team is already in the city to attend a training camp for the series. The teams will be put up in Hotel Mountview.

Both teams will have their practice session in the evening tomorrow under the floodlights.

The matches, which will be relayed live on ESPN Star Sports channel, will start at 6.45 pm.
