Mandi, February 15
The Chief Minister, Mr Virbhadra Singh, today directed SDMs and teachers to check the menace of mass copying. He also directed the 105 MW Uhal project engineers to speed up the work.

Addressing a gathering, including students, after laying the foundation stone of the Rs 1.83-crore lift drinking water scheme at Ladbharol in Jogindernagar subdivision, about 85 km from here, he said the copying could help pass a examination but rendered students incapable of handling things that required hard work.

He said the government was constructing a network of roads in the state and linking every panchayat by spending Rs 2000 crore. “The government will spend Rs 22 crore to build roads and Rs 7 crore on water schemes in Jogindernagar subdivision during the current financial year,” he said.

Taking serious view of the slow pace of work of the Uhal project, he directed engineers to complete the project in time.

He announced a grant of Rs 5 lakh for a senior secondary school at Ladbharol.

Devtas to decide fate of ski village today
Tribune Reporters

Mandi, February 15
Over 400 devtas of the Kulu valley will decide the fate of the dream of Mr Alfred Brush Ford, great grandson of Henry Ford, to set up a world-class $500 million Himalayan Ski Village (HSV) at a height of 13,500 ft near the Hampta Pass in the Manali region at the Jagati Puchh Dharam Sansad, a conclave of devtas, at Naggar in Kulu district tomorrow.

The Dharam Sansad has been called at the behest of the Jamlu devta of Haripur village, near Naggar, who, during a ritual, expressed fears that the “proposed ski project will pollute the peaks, ‘tapobhumi of devtas’ where no structure can exist without their permission”.

The “Gurs” of the devtas appear in trance during the Jagati Puchh and answer queries of the people present at the Jagatipat historic pedestal located near Naggar, the seat of 18 Karrus and 18 Narayanas, who are believed to have given birth to over 365 devtas worshipped in the valley.

Pleading the case of the company, the Director, HSV, Mr Ajay Dabra, told The Tribune that the company had conducted a study of the area between the Allian and Duhangan streams in the area located above Prini and Jagatsukh villages on the left bank of the Beas. “The proposed ski village will touch no sacred peak in the valley. The company has decided not to serve beef or any other objectionable items that hurt the religious sentiments of the people and devtas at the ski resort”, he added.

The Commissioner, Tourism, Mr Tarun Shridhar, said the company had submitted its preliminary project report and had signed an MoU for the proposed project. The government would give five hectares above the tree line subject to the condition that it was cleared by the Union Forest and Environment Ministry, he added.

Kulu: The area where the Himalayan Ski Village is proposed to be constructed is not only important from the religious point of view, but also defence as well.

Mr R.C. Chambial, president of the District Devta Kardar Sangh, and working president of the Kuloot Sanskriti Vikas Manch, in a press note issued here today, criticised Mr Dilaram Shabab, a former MLA, for supporting the Himalayan Ski Village project without knowing the details.

He said he had met Mr Shabab a few days ago and apprised him of the damages likely to be caused by the project.

He said Mr Shabab seemed ignorant about the importance of Inderpuri, Indrasan, Deu Tibba, Chanderkhani, Jai Dhara, Hamta Dhar, Rumtu Soh and Rohtang’s seven sister peaks. These places fell in the area earmarked for the development of the ski village, he added.

He said these places were not only sacred but had also been earmarked as grazing places.

Mr Chambial said the area was close to the China border, hence fragile from the defence point of view. He said the project would adversely affect the environment.

Himachal Pradesh State Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) has hailed the Centre’s decision to constitute the sixth pay commission and to constitute a high-power committee to suggest amendments in the Labour Act for the welfare of workers in the country.

In a statement here today, Mr Rajnesh Sharma, state general secretary of the state INTUC, stated that recently the national INTUC president, Mr G. Sanjiva Reddy, had met the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, who accepted the demands in principle and assured to implement these in near future.

Mr Sharma urged the Chief Minister, Mr Virbhadra Singh, to render shares of the loss-earning public sector undertakings to the employees engaged in these so that they should work with more dedication to get them out of the red.

He also demanded to amend the existing bonus rules as these were covering only 3 per cent of the employees whereas the rest of the employees were being deprived of this benefit. He also underlined the need to sanction special economic package for the state transport industries of hill states like Himachal Pradesh where road transport was the major means of transportation.

The state ayurveda doctors association has alleged the state government of giving them step motherly treatment to the unemployed ayurveda doctors who were appeared in interview twice for contract appointments but given no job on the pretext of faulty selection procedure.

Dr Sanjiv Guleria, state president of the association, in a statement here today accused the government of making state Ayurveda Department as nobody’s baby resulting in the recent closure of as many as 170 ayurvedic dispensaries all over the state. He said the government had no concrete policy or programme to promote ayurveda in the state.

He pointed out the unemployed ayurveda doctors who appeared in interviews conducted by the then government in June 1999 had again appeared in the interviews in May last year for batchwise appointments but intriguingly the government had revoked the whole selection process by blaming the state Ayurveda Department for holding interviews only for the candidates seeking batchwise contract appointments. He questioned whether the government would further relax the upper age limit of those who had crossed it by appearing twice within six years for batchwise appointments.
