One of the youngest members of the Ludhiana branch of the Indian Dental Association (IDA), Dr Bhavdeep Singh Ahuja, has won Dr Ratan H. Doctor Award, which is given every year by the central body to best member below 30 years of age. The award was presented to him at the inaugural ceremony of the 59th Indian Dental Conference held here during the last week of January. It carried a memento, a certificate and a cash prize of Rs 3,000. OC

Gurmeet, Jaychandran best athletes

Ludhiana, February 11
International shot putter Gurmeet Kaur of North zone and Jaychandaran of South zone were declared the best athletes in the 34th All India Life Insurance Corporation of India Athletics Meet which concluded at Guru Nanak Stadium here today.

Jaychandaran was also named the fastest male runner of the meet while Vasanthi A Bikoor of the South Central zone secured this honour in the women’s section. The overall trophy in the men’s section went to the South Central zone and in the women’s section, the South zone won this honour. The South Central zone added another feather in its crown by lifting the Chairman’s Cup.

Mr Atul Kumar Shukla, Chairman, LIC, was the chief guest at the prize distribution function. Mr D.K. Bhagat, Senior Divisional Manager, Ludhiana, Mr Gianinder Singh Sandhu, District Sports Officer, along with staff members of all the LIC units in Ludhiana were also present on the occasion.

Rajeev of South Central zone 2 and Sekhar of South zone 3; hammer throw: Vinod Kumar of North Central zone 1, Karnail Singh of North zone 2 and John Satya Bacu of Central zone 3; long jump: Jayachandran of Sout zone 1, Debashish Talakdar of Eastern zone 2 and Sushil Giri of Central zone 3; 5000m: Harish Tiwari of North Central zone 1, Vijay Kashta of Western zone 2 and M.V. Women: 1500m: Madhuri Gurnule of Western zone 1; 4x100m relay: South Central zone 1, South zone 2; hammer throw: Alka Tiwari of North Central zone 2 and Ritu Bhatia of North zone 3; triple jump: Lekha Rai of South zone 1 and Harshini Kumari of South Central zone 2.

Rubani, Jashandeep win 100 m race

A large number of students took part in the 1st Annual Athletics Meet of Sat Paul Mittal School, Dugri, here today. The participants were quite enthusiastic while taking part in sports, which also included fun games. The students, divided into four houses namely Satlej, Ravi, Beas and Chenab, competed for top honours.

Mr Rakesh Bharti Mittal, Vice-Chairman, Management Committee, Sat Paul Mittal School, inaugurated the meet and took slaute from the athletes at an impressive march past. A PT performance by the students of the Pravesh Vatika and aerobics by the Upvan Vatika were appreciated by the gathering.

Ms Suneet Sidhu, Headmistress of the school, proposed the vote of thanks and expressed gratitude towards the chief guest and parents of the students, who graced the occasion.

Results: (Boys)- 80m- Avranpreet 1, Daman 2, and Noah George 3; 100m- Jashandeep Singh 1, Ramneet Singh 2 and Nishchay 3; cycle race- Bikramjit Singh 1, Rajveer Khurana 2 and Aryan Nayyar 3; long jump- Himanshu 1, Gobind Brar, 2 and Sachinmeet Singh 3; 100m- Ketan 1, Sachinmeet 2, and Himanshu 3.

Girls- 80m- Inaiyat 1, Sarah 2, and Gurleen 3; 100m- Rubani 1, Harleen 2, and Drishti 3; balloon race- Akshi Jain 1, Vishakha Bhanot 2, and Lovleen Dua 3.

Sports festival begins

The 9th annual sports festival being organised by the Golden Youth Club in association with the NRIs of the area began at the Shaheed Paramjit Singh High School ground of Gill village near here today. Arjuna awardee and the Deputy Director, Sports, Punjab Agricultural University, Ramandeep Singh Grewal, inaugurated the festival.

Results: 100m — Beant Singh 1, Raj Kumar 2 and Amandeep Singh 3; long jump — Sarwanjit Singh 1, Natha Singh 2 and Ranjit Singh 3; 800m — Harnek Singh 1, Amandeep Singh 2 and Angrej Singh 3; 400m — Raj Kumar 1, Amandeep Singh 2 and Jarnail Singh 3; kabaddi (52 kg) — Gill B beat Lohara.
