Haryana to buy 850 MW of power
Panchkula, January 23 The MoUs have been signed keeping in mind the increase in power demand on a long-term basis, as these projects are likely to be commissioned during 2008-09 to 2010- 11, according to Mr R.N. Prashar, Financial Commissioner and Principal Secretary, Power, Haryana. A decision to this effect was taken after a meeting of Mr Prashar and Ms Jyoti Arora, Managing Director, HPGC, with Mr T N Thakur, Chairman and Managing Director, Power Trading Corporation Limited, in Delhi today. Though Haryana had sought 721.6 MW from the Tripura gas-based power project, 200 MW has been allotted. As against a demand of 1000 MW from Karchan Wangtoo hydro electric power project in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana has been allotted 200 MW. One hundred and fifty megawatts have been allotted from the West Seti hydro project in Nepal and 300 MW from Teesta hydro electric project. |
Sonepat faces severe power crisis
Sonepat, January 23 Power supply has been reduced to just half of the total requirement at the city. Rural areas are the worst sufferers. Though the government claimed that measures were being taken up improve power supply in the state, cuts have become unprecedented. Power cut starts in the morning and continues till late in the night, causing inconvenience to all sections of society. Sure the students were taking annual examinations, power crisis had badly hit their studies. Though majority of the households have investors even they failed as these do not get charged bast, they said. residents said that the power crisis had been getting longer and the time had extended over one month that too in winter when demand was much, lower. People who go to Delhi or other far-off places in connection with job or business have to wake up early in the morning to reach their places of work on time. They do not find power to get some warm water. Routine of a large number of residents, has been —— they claims. Schoolchildren also got late many times due to the power crisis. Complaint centres had been rendered useless as they are unable to say on the number of cuts or duration. their stock reply was it has been off from the receiving end, the residents pointed. Representatives of the Residents Welfare Association and the Sonepat Citizens Forum said that as the problems were the same, there had been hardly any difference between the previous government and the present rule one. Haryana Govt told to pay compensation
Chandigarh, January 23 Surinder Kumar had been picked up for his alleged involvement in an excise case in 2005 and remained behind bars for 27 days. He was finally released after the police caught the real accused. In his petition, Surinder’s father had sought action against the police personnel involved in the mix-up as also adequate compensation for the misery that his son underwent. Disposing of the writ, Mr Justice S.K. Mittal directed the government to pay Rs 50,000 compensation to Surinder. |
4 held in triple murder case
Hisar, January 23 Three brothers were shot dead, while their fourth brother and two others were injured in an attack on them by a group near their ‘dhaani’ on the morning of January 19. The persons arrested in connection with the triple murder case include Sunder alias Sonu, son of Hanuman, Kuldeep alias Deepa, and Mahadev alias Chhailu, sons of Makkhan, and Teja Ram, son of Sunda Ram Bishnoi, all residents of Khara Kheri village in the district. On the other hand, the Hansi police has also nabbed six proclaimed offenders wanted in a case of group assault and attempt to murder registered on September 29, 2005. The arrested persons were produced in a court here today which remanded them in judicial custody. Meanwhile, the police has arrested proclaimed offender Bhim Singh of Jind district, who allegedly was involved in a case of dacoity at Bichpadi village in Hisar district in 1986. The accused had been evading arrest for the past 20 years. According to police sources, Bhim Singh, along with his accomplices, had raided the house of Amar Chand Mahajan in Bichpadi village and decamped with cash and jewellery after locking the family members in the house. While his accomplices were arrested, Bhim Singh had been evading arrest. A case in this regard had been registered at the Barwala police station. In another case, the police has arrested three persons allegedly involved in a looting incident in the Mill Gate area of the city, which took place in 2002. The arrested persons include Kailash alias Bana, Raj Kumar alias Raju and Krishan alias Kala. They are lodged in two days’ police custody. The Narnaund police has arrested three persons, Lalit, Monu and Nanha while they were allegedly planning to loot vehicle-owners near the Ughalan turn. A Tata Sumo vehicle, a country-made pistol and an iron rod have been seized from their possession. |

Ambala, January 23 This constituency is the solitary Assembly segment in Haryana which does not have any villages attached to it. It is an urban constituency. However, all that may change following the proposal of the commission. As per the commission’s proposal, a few villages which were earlier within the Naggal and Ambala City Assembly constituencies are likely to be attached with the Ambala Cantt Assembly segment. It is proposed that the Ambala Cantonment constituency will comprise Ambala Tehsil (part), Ambala City Kanungo Circle (part), Panjokhra Patwar Circle, Mandhaur Patwar Circle, Ambala Cantt Kanungo Circle, Babyal Patwar Circle, Kardhan Patwar Circle, Ambala Sadar MC, Bara Patwar Circle and Ambala Cantt (CB). The areas which belong to Ambala City and are likely to be attached with the Cantt segment include Ambala City Kanungo Circle, Panjokhra Patwar Circle and Mandhaur Patwar Circle. The areas which belong to the Naggal Assembly constituency and are likely to be attached with the Cantt are Babyal Patwar Circle, Kardhan Patwar Circle and Bara Patwar Circle. While the Cantt segment is currently considered to be a small constituency in terms of population and size, it is going to change. The population of the proposed Cantt segment will be 2,58,752 which includes 48,222 SCs. Even the Ambala City Assembly segment is going to be bigger once the commission’s proposal comes through. The commission has proposed that the areas which are going to be part of Ambala City Assembly segment include Ambala Tehsil (part), Ambala City Kanungo Circle (part), Ghel Patwar Circle, Sonda Patwar Circle, Manakpur Patwar Circle, Suba Akbarpur Patwar Circle, Patti Mahar Patwar Circle, Ambala City (MC), Naggal Kanungo Circle, Jalbera Patwar Circle, Balana Kanungo Circle, Balana Patwar Circle, Sullar Patwar Circle and Bhano Kheri Patwar Circle. The areas of Kanungo circles of Naggal and Balana and the Patwar circles of Jalbera, Sullar and Bhano Kheri are currently part of the Naggal Assembly segment. |
7 die in mishaps in 48 hours
Yamunanagar, January 23 As per police sources, Sunil (28) and Karamchand (25), both residents of Yamunanagar died after the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a car near Milkmajra village late last evening. The were returning home from Mustfabad when the accident took place. In an another accident, which took place at around the same spot, one Mukesh of Pinjore village here died. In this case also, his motorcycle met an accident with a car. On Saturday, Balwainder (30), Lali (30) and Guruchand (22) who were in a Maruti Zen car died after the car rammed into a truck near Rakshak Vihar chowki on the road. Two other occupants of the car, Jaswinder and Shyama also received injuries in the accident. Sources said the car driver probably did not notice the road divider and entered the wrong lane and rammed into the truck which was going towards Ambala. All five persons were going to Purngarh in Uttar Pardesh. On Saturday evening, Shivram of Ghasitpur village, Ambala had died after his motorcycle met an accident with a truck near Bambholi village road. |
Prof Yash Pal gets Mukandians award
Yamunanagar, January 23 This was stated by the President, National Council for Science and Technology Communication Network, Government of India, Prof Yash Pal, while speaking at a function of “The Mukandians”, an organisation consisting of teachers, alumni of 30 educational institutions of Uttar Pardesh, Haryana and Punjab, last evening at MLN College here. Prof Yash Pal invited the youth to learn to dream and then to transform those dreams into realities. He was presented The Mukandians award during the function. Dr K.L. Johar, president of The Mukandians and former Vice-Chancellor, GJU, Hisar, commended the efforts of Prof Yash Pal in popularising scientific knowledge through a column, “The Universe”, in The Tribune. Prof R.P. Hooda, Vice-Chancellor, Kurukshetra University, honoured three distinguished Mukandian namely Mr Pawan Sharma of the Department of Chemistry, Kurukshetra University, Dr Shyam Lal and Prof Ishwar Aggarwal. Rohtak, January 23 The police said the caller, who identified himself as S.P. Randhawa to the Principal hung up after claiming a bomb planted in the building would go off shortly. The school authorities informed the police who summoned sniffer dogs and a bomb disposal squad. |
Parts of city waterless for
10 hours
Sonepat, January 23 Residents had to fetch water from distant places. Carrying pitchers on heads women were seen carrying water from far-off places. Residents attempted to contact officials of the Public Health on telephone but they failed to get response as officials were not in office during duty hours. The Residents Welfare Association and the Sonepat Citizens Forum today demanded suspension of the officials responsible for the water crisis. They also demanded a high-level probe into public complaints about water crisis.

3 accused remanded in police custody
Fatehabad, January 23 Mr Hemant, from Hisar, was kidnapped from the residence of his in-laws at Tohana earlier this month. The trader returned home after three days and it was said that his family had paid the ransom demanded by the kidnappers. The police stumbled on the kidnappers when the Jind police arrested four persons roaming under suspicious circumstances. The police recovered a pistol, an iron rod, a torch, a motorbike and a car from their possession. On interrogation, the accused Surender, Narender, Sikander and Man Singh told the police that they were conspiring to loot a Punjab Roadways bus. They also informed the police that they along with Vijay and a Tohana resident Ravi had kidnapped Hemant and later freed him after getting a ransom of Rs 5 lakh. Ravi and Vijay are still wanted by the police. Surender, according to the police, was on parole in a case of double murder. |

March by blanket-making units
Panipat, January 23 Slogans-raising workers submitted a memorandum to the DC and urged the labour department to take action against the erring factory owners. Workers alleged that owing to the official-factory owners nexus the latter were not following the labour laws. General Secretary of the Indian Federation of Trade Unions (IFTU), P. P. Kapoor blamed the Hooda government for not taking the demands of the workers seriously. Trade union leaders urged the state authorities to ensure compensation to the workers who had become jobless due to the illegal closure of various units.

Canter, jeep carrying diesel looted
Sirsa, January 23 The miscreants later abandoned both looted vehicles at various places yesterday after taking away all 17 barrels worth over Rs 1 lakh. One of the occupants of the canter Indraj Singh in his complaint with the Sirsa police stated
that both vehicles were on way to Rajasthan after purchasing diesel. He alleged that when they reached near a factory on the Sirsa-Begu road en route Rajasthan, a car overtook them and its occupants brandished guns at him and the jeep driver. After forcing them down they allegedly took away both vehicles laden with diesel. Both abandoned vehicles were later recovered by the police. The police has registered a case against

Wheat barley crops attacked by worms
Sirsa, January 23 Many farmers said today that due to the absence of rain in December and also due to frost and chilly winds the crops were hit and now the attack of the Nematodes had caused yellowing of the leaves and the stems of the crops. The growth of the crops has also been stunted in some cases which will reduce production, they lamented. When contacted, Deputy Director, Agriculture Department, Pardeep Meel said that over 50 farmers had complained about the attack and that he would make an assessment of the damage to the crops. Truck carrying cotton gutted
Sonepat, January 23 The truck was on its way from Ellenabad to Lalru in Punjab. It was carrying 100 bags of cotton, police sources said, adding the truck driver noticed the smoke when he reached the Ganaur Chowk of the G T road. He stopped the truck and tried to extinguish the fire with the help from labourers of the nearby dhabas but failed. Three fire engines reached the spot and the fire was brought under control.
