Three brothers shot dead in
ambush
Sunit Dhawan Tribune News Service
Agroha (Hisar), January 19 A pall of gloom descended on the “dhaani” and village as soon as the news of the murders reached there. The Haryana Director-General of Police, Mr Kunwar Nirmal Singh, the Inspector-General of Police (Hisar range), Mr Yashpal Singhal, and the Hisar Senior Superintendent of Police, Mr Arshinder Singh Chawla, visited the scene of crime. The DGP has directed the local police authorities to ensure that proper investigation was carried out in the case and to take steps to prevent any retaliation or repercussion in this regard. According to police sources, five sons and two grandsons of Ghisa Ram of the “dhaani” were on their way to Hisar in a car to appear in a local court in connection with hearing of a case. Members of the rival group had laid an ambush near a canal bridge and as soon as the car reached the bridge, they rained bullets on it and fled. Three brothers Dholu Ram, Rai Sahab and Jug Lal were killed on the spot in the firing, while their brother Om Prakash and two others— Surender and Sandeep— were injured in the attack. The district police chief said Agroha SHO Kartar Singh was investigating the matter under the supervision of DSP (City) Omvir Singh. Seeing the gravity of the matter, three police teams comprising 10 personnel each have been deployed in the three main hubs of the “dhaani”. Two inspectors are also there to ensure that no untoward incident takes place in retaliation. The attack leading to the killings was the a result of a nearly 10-year-long rivalry between the families of Ghisa Ram and Hanuman Godara over some local politics. Cases of murder and an attempt to murder involving the two parties are already pending in court. Meanwhile, in response to a complaint lodged by Mr Chhabeel Dass, the fifth surviving brother who was accompanying the deceased, the Apgroha police registered a case against 13 persons, including Jagdish, Shiv Lal, Jas Ram, Bharat Singh, Hans Raj, Makkhan, Mahender, Sunder, Kuldeep, Inder, Mahadev, Pappu and Molad. According to police sources, several persons have been rounded up and further investigations are on in this regard. |
Students pelt stones on college
Ambala, January 19 SA Jain College principal Dr S.P. Singh said that a few glass panes were shattered in the stone-pelting incident. “Nobody was, however, injured,” he said. Dr S.P. Singh said the identity cards of the students were checked at the college gate this morning to ensure that outsiders do not gain entry. “Apparently, some of the students had not brought their identity cards and they were asked to get the identity cards from home,” he said. He said a few students passed on a message to the students who were already present inside the college. The students demanded that they should be allowed inside but the students without identity cards were denied entry. “A couple of students then came to my office,” he said. “We immediately informed the police about the incident,” he added. Dr S.P. Singh said it had been decided to suspend ten students. |
Crucial HUDA meeting on reservations for MPs,
Chandigarh, January 19 Well-placed sources informed TNS that a lobby of senior bureaucrats, mediapersons, judges and advocates were now mounting pressure on the state government to reserve sites for them. Interestingly, after the Housing Board, Haryana, reserved 33 per cent plots for women applicants, certain women groups too are lobbying for reservation. The move comes in the wake of the decision of the Haryana Government to introduce a 10 per cent reservation for defence personnel / ex-servicemen and Indian domiciles in paramilitary forces. Another 5 per cent of the sites have been reserved for MPs and MLAs. Thus, a meeting of senior officials of HUDA will be held tomorrow to discuss the issue on whether these reservations are to be considered. HUDA proposes to float GHS in seven urban estates of Haryana - Panchkula (44), Gurgaon (30), Faridabad (130), Rewari (20), Sonepat (40), Palwal (30) and Panipat (20). A total of 314 sites in these urban estates are on offer, with maximum sites being offered in Faridabad. The applications are already being received by HUDA, and the scheme will end next month. All sites are half acre in size, and these schemes will be open to all Indian citizens (and not residents of Chandigarh and Haryana alone, as earlier). For the first time, HUDA has also introduced a system, by which only 25 per cent members in a Group Housing Society can transfer their membership. This will help in curbing the practice of becoming members for “speculation”. Officials say that another shift in policy introduced while floating these GHS is that the land lay- out has been planned before the scheme is floated. Earlier, a total area was floated, and depending on the number of eligible cooperative societies, the land was allotted to the societies in multiples of half acre, i.e. half acre, one acre, one and the half acres etc. |

CPM’s stir by January end
Rohtak, January 19 Talking to newspersons after the meeting he said the party was disappointed with the policies followed by the Centre and the Haryana government. These, he said, were only compounding the problems faced by the people. At the same nothing was being proposed to solve the problem of unemployment. The CPM leader said the Haryana government was creating problems by not filling lakhs of posts in different departments and then blaming employees for the mess. All this was being done deliberately to facilitate privatisation. However, the party would approach people with viable solutions to these problems to create awareness. He regretted that while the Employment Guarantee Scheme had been implemented in Mewat and Sirsa districts, no steps had been taken to make it a success. Mr Inderjeet Singh criticised the new land acquisition policy of the government saying it was only uprooting villages to benefit land sharks. He demanded that the government come out with a transparent and people-friendly land acquisition policy. The party would observe January 24 as “anti-imperialism day” to prepare the people to show resentment against America’s bullying tactics the world over during the US President’s forthcoming visit to India. |
Woman minister doesn’t want woman PA
Chandigarh, January 19 The PA in question is a veteran and had been even attached to a Chief Secretary of the state earlier. But Ms Jindal does not want her. Apparently, the minister is under the impression that a woman PA will be reluctant to work after office hours. The minister may like to work at odd hours also and will need the PA. The minister also expects the PA to accompany her on tours. This may also be a problem if the PA happens to be woman. In view these two possible constraints, Ms Jindal wants her PA to be changed. The impression is that if the PA is a man, he will find it easier to work after office hours or accompany the minister when she goes on tours. To emphasise the inconvenience of the Minister of State for Urban Development, a source close to her said Ms Jindal was the only minister to have been given a woman PA. |
Encroachers protest against HUDA
Sonepat, January 19 According to a report, the demonstration and dharna was led by Ms Pushpinder Kaur, President of the Women’s Wing of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), who announced that the dharna would continue till the demand of the slum dwellers was accepted by the state government. She also criticised the state government for its failure to allot land or plots to the slum dwellers who were living in jhuggis. She also appealed to them not to vacate the land till their demand was accepted. She said an indefinite hunger strike would be launched if the slum dwellers were evicted forcibly by the government. Meanwhile, slum dwellers from far-off places continued to reach the site and even put up their jhuggis on the land. This process continued for the second day today thanks to the failure of the authorities concerned to prevent them from taking illegal possession of the land belonging to HUDA. According to reports, the slum dwellers have so far illegally occupied four acres whereas 35 acres of land had been lying vacant in the area as a case was pending in the Supreme Court for hearing. The HUDA , district and police officials are still in a fix over getting the land vacated and evicting the slum dwellers. |
Villager kidnapped in Naraingarh
Ambala, January 19 In another incident, a school student claimed that he had been `kidnapped’ yesterday. However, police officials say that there are several loopholes in the student’s kidnapping
story. Gurdeep Singh, a resident of Chormastpur village, told police personnel that he had gone to his school in Durga Nagar in the morning. Gurdeep is a student of class VIII. He said that he forgot his answer notebook and had come out of the school when he was `kidnapped’ by three youths. |
