Pratap to move PIL over IG issue
Chandigarh, January 22 Recently, the Haryana Police had arrested two ASIs under the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe from a police Inspector for getting him extension in service. The FIR mentioned the name of the IG, Rohtak range, Mr Sharad Kumar, as the person on whose behalf the bribe was allegedly accepted. The government handed over the investigation to the Vigilance Bureau of the state. Mr Pratap Singh said here today that the investigating officer in the Vigilance Bureau was the rank of SP, who was junior to the IG. Under these circumstances the public and junior ranks of the police would not have faith in the investigation. He said it would be in the interest of all concerned if the investigation was handed over to the CBI, which should also depute an officer senior to the IG and not belonging to Haryana to inquire into the case. He said he would approach the court with the plea that the case should be handed over to the CBI. Mr Pratap Singh also said that an alleged narcotics king of Sirsa district, Baldev Singh alias
Balla, who was recently arrested, was enjoying all facilities in the Sirsa jail. He said Balla enjoyed political patronage during the previous regime and no police officer of the district dared to act against him because the writ of the former ruling family still ran there. However, an honest DSP, who was recently posted in the district, arrested
Balla, who had been declared proclaimed offender in Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab. However, the person who tipped off the DSP about
Balla, had now been implicated in a false drug pedaling case. He urged the Chief Minister to order an inquiry into the episode. Mr Pratap Singh also said that Balla should be shifted to some high-security jail like Ambala because in the past also notorious criminals had escaped from the Sirsa jail. |

Farmers’ panchayat today
Yamunanagar, January 22 A Mahapanchayat of farmers under the aegis of the Samiti would be held at Jagadhri tomorrow. A transporter has approached the Samiti with an offer to lift sugarcane directly from fields at Rs 130 a quintal. The offer, which would come for discussion at the panchayat is “lucrative” as the mill purchases cane for Rs 123 a quintal and farmers spent money on transportation also. On January 19, the Samiti had given the gram bandh call to pressurize the mill management and government to accept their demands. Yesterday, the mill had pasted notices that mill has been closed for a short period. The Samiti has urged the administration and mill management to accept the demands of the farmers or else the Samiti was ready to run the mill on its own. There are more than 55,000 farmers associated with sugarcane farming in the district. The area under cane cultivation is less (about 35,000 acres) against 50,000 acres few years ago. Till now, the mill management has not invited the farmers for talks. An official of the mill said the management was ready to discuss the matter. The bandh will not “affect” the farmers but the mill. The cane standing in fields (COS 8436 variety) is of a late sown variety and could be left in the fields till the middle of February. The Samiti members claim that 240 odd cane - crushing units in the district have agreed to purchase their produce at Rs 150 per quintal or for even more. Certain farmers have also started selling their produce in Uttar Pardesh. A sugar mill of UP has reportedly issued a special code for Haryana farmers and is ready to purchase cane at Rs 149.50 a quintal. |
Rohtak to have ultramodern sugar complex
Rohtak, January 22 The Board of Directors of the mill on Friday decided to scrap the existing mill, sell the land to the government and set up a modern sugar complex somewhere on the southern bypass. The existing mill has been running into losses for the past several years because of outdated machinery. The new complex will not only produce international quality sugar and ethanol, but also will utilise the waste water for producing mineral water. The bagasse will be used to produce 15 MW of power worth over Rs 24 crore annually at current rates. During the mill’s season it will consume 5 MW power for its own running. The remaining 10 MW will be sold to the State Power Utilities. In the off-season the entire production will go to these utilities. This will help alleviate power shortage in the city since the mill will meet about 70 per cent of its power requirement from its power plant. The proposed sugar complex will produce ethanol, which is used by the liquor, cosmetic and the drug industries. The production of ethanol will be driven by the market factors as its production can be raised or lowered as need be. It is learnt that the new complex will be funded entirely from the sale proceeds of the land where the existing mill is located. The government will buy this land and the proceeds will be sufficient for setting up the new complex. The sugar produced in the new complex will be free from many of the impurities found in the produce of the existing sugar mills in the state. The sugar will meet international standards and will be suitable for exports. The new complex is expected to be commissioned by the beginning of the 2008-2009 crushing season. |
