INLD burns effigy of Surjewala
Fatehabad, December 24 Former Haryana Minister Sampat Singh led the INLD workers, who marched in procession from the local Jat Dharamshala and went up to the Jawahar Chowk where they burnt an effigy of the Transport Minister. Dr Sushil Indora, Deputy Leader of the INLD in the Assembly, Mr Gian Chand Odh, MLA, Mr Nishan Singh, district president of the party, Ms Swatantar Bala Chaudhary, a former MLA, and Ms Krishana Poonia, district president of the women wing of the party, were present during demonstrations. Addressing workers, Mr Sampat Singh said Mr Surjewala had been badly exposed in the turn of events after the Volcker report was published. He said when the name of Mr Jagat Singh appeared in the report for having gone to Iraq as a representative of the Indian Youth Congress, Mr Surjewala went on record to deny having ever recommended the name of Mr Jagat Singh. But now it had been proved that Mr Surjewala had lied and the letter of recommendation given by him to Jagat Singh had become public. Later, talking to mediapersons, Mr Sampat Singh said the Haryana Government had proved to be an utter failure and all sections of society had been disillusioned with this government. Mr Sampat Singh alleged due to inexperience of the Hooda government, the state had been experiencing an unprecedented shortage of power. He said the production capacity of various units of the state was 4000 KW and this was precisely the consumption of the state at this moment. Mr Singh said due to poor maintenance, three of the production units had failed resulting in lesser production of electricity by 1000 KW. Mr Sampat Singh ridiculed the state government for setting up gas-based power plants without ascertaining whether gas was available or not. He revealed that that after the state government invested a lot of money and time on the setting up of gas-based plants, it was informed by the GAIL that it was not in a position to supply the gas till the year 2010. He said that this reflected inexperience on the part of the government. |

FLASHBACK 2005: Law and Order Shubhadeep Choudhury Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, December 24 In the absence of any fear of repression from the government apparatus, an atmosphere has been created where groups of people are emboldened to raise their demands. This is a welcome development but also fraught with danger as the workers’ agitation in Gurgaon has shown. The previous regime in Haryana headed by Mr Om Prakash Chautala was marked by allegations relating to patronage to criminals and criminals-turned-politicians. Fears of a nexus between criminals and politicians emerging in Haryana in the fashion of some of the states of the Gangetic plains have been given a burial by the present regime led by the Chief Minister, Mr Bhupinder Singh Hooda. This is the second important change. Lastly, the police top brass chosen by the Hooda government also appears to be a better lot than some of their predecessors. The DGP, Mr Nirmal Singh, is making efforts to curb corruption in the police force and even goes about in disguise to nail corrupt police officials. The first major setback for the Hooda-led government on the law and order front came in the form of the incident at Gurgaon. The incident and its aftermath are well known and do not need to be retold. The Gohana incident, which took place soon after the Gurgaon fiasco, also caused considerable embarrassment to the government. Thankfully, the incident did not snowball into full-scale caste violence. Ideally, a popular government need not use force against the citizens but when it becomes imperative, what does a government do ? Mr Hooda will have to find an answer to this question before another incident takes place somewhere. The government, however, is coming down with a heavy hand on the underworld and allegedly even using the rather questionable method of liquidating notorious criminals in so-called encounters. This is in stark contrast to the Chautala regime which was accused of hobnobbing with the underworld. The Hooda government has so far remained free from such accusations. |
365 LPG cylinders seized
Sonepat, December 24 Mr G.D. Godara, District Food and Supplies Controller (DFSC), while talking to mediapersons here today, said the officials of the department had seized as many as 365 LPG cylinders during the campaign after carrying out raids on factories and sweets shops. These cylinders, he said, were meant for domestic supply which were being used for commercial purposes. He also stated that this action of the department was necessitated following receipt of various public complaints about the black marketing and illegal use of LPG cylinders by the owners of dhabas, hotels and restaurants. He said the department was contemplating to take legal action against the erring persons. |
Criminal killed in encounter
Hisar, December 24 On getting specific information about the whereabouts of Sikander, a team of the Hisar police had gone to Kotkapura to arrest him. Hisar SSP Arshinder Singh Chawla, who was personally supervising the operation, told The Tribune on phone from Kotkapura that on being sighted, Sikander opened fire at the police personnel and he was killed in the ensuing encounter. He was also named in another murder case at Assandh in Karnal district and yet another broad daylight murder of a financier at Uklana township in Hisar. Insult to CMO, say doctors
Panipat, December 24 The Tribune had highlighted yesterday that the Medical Superintendent, Dr H. S. Randhawa, did not allow Dr Neh Lata Singh to attend office, claiming that he had taken charge as the officiating CMO. A doctor alleged that the fight between the two senior had led to an embarrassing situation for the hospital. This morning, when this reporter visited the hospital, the office of a former District Health Officer, Dr R.K. Garg was locked. The hospital staff said Dr Randhawa had instructed them to lock the office. Meanwhile, Dr Garg, who was relieved yesterday by Dr Randhawa confirmed that he had been appointed as additional SMO in the same hospital, but refused to comment further. Due to the locked office, doctors complained that they could not mark their presence in the register kept in the office of the CMO. The doctors objected to the immediate removal of nameplates of the two doctors. “It is an unfair practice and insulting. The hospital authorities have acted in an autocratic manner. As per the norms, the outgoing CMO hands over the charge to the official designated by the HoD and the same officer cannot be debarred from entering the office,” said a doctor. |
